You may be too young to know, but John Lindsay walked the NYC streets to calm tensions to try to avoid violence. Trump is trumpeting damages. I don’t think what he did at the church was helpful at all. Neither does the Episcopal bishop.

I’m afraid Trump is totally losing it. This action taken against peaceful protesters so that he could walk to a church and hold the Bible up in a defiant pose. As a Christian once again I’m bothered by his obvious pandering to Christians. For me it has the opposite effect of what I believe he wants.
 
Yes, to ensure getting the (iced) coffee-drinker vote. Lots of those people.
 
Trump knows his audience quite well. Believe me, people go for photo-ops like this. Trump is skillfully merging pre-election politics and policy. He has grown immeasurably as a politician.

I feel what was done to the peaceful protesters was wrong…As as Trump as with everything he does I try not to comment, but I will say I’m not surprised anymore. We are the Catholic forum we should pray for Trump, we need to pray for our country for we are at a place none of us have been before…and we need to pray for one another Pray for all the souls that have been lost to the virus, to violenc. We need to be strong, we have to focus on all we have to do. The virus is not over, we have elections coming up. Through the wounds of Jesus, I ask God to watch over you.

If it goes as well as the tear gassing of peaceful protestors to stage a photo op, I’m fairly sure we don’t want to see Trump ordering the Army into the streets.
 
From the air, in an interview he announced it, then the topic of using an air wing came up amongst them

He will just mobilize armed civilians though, just as he has started doing .

You mean vigilantism? That’s probably even a worse idea.

Sending counter rioters out to stop rioters or put down peaceful protests is not only against the law, it will definitely escalate violence.

Whether anyone likes it or not, people have the right to protest. Trump apparently ordered the tear gassing of peaceful protestors. That is illegal, unAmerican, and unconscionable. Adding guns to the suppression is what they do in Iran.

But silence is probably what he demands. He doesn’t tolerate criticism. And many of his supporters don’t care much for it either. Be better than him. Respond with love, not with calls for violent suppression.

Well, he let religious organizations off Obama’/Biden HHS Mandate, reinstated the Mexico City Policy which Obama/Biden canceled, allowed states to defund the Biden/Obama Planned Parenthood, and attended the March for Life which Biden didn’t. So, flawed man though Trump is, he seems more like a Catholic to me than Biden does.

And you Democrats ought to consider something. If Biden doesn’t care any more about his religion than he seems to, what in the world makes you think he cares anything about you?
 
The Papal States was not a democracy. The right to “protest” is not a traditional Catholic value. It is, however, a traditional American value. The same posters defending Trump’s use of tear gas on peaceful protestors would have screamed and shouted and stomped their feet in a rage if Obama had done the same thing… NO. DOUBT. That’s a trend - things conservatives condemned up until 2016 they now laud in the era of Trump.
 
Do the NPR and USA Today stories remark on the vandalism done to the church? Set on fire. But now, we differentiate between “peaceful protesters” and who knows who?? None-story.

Trump has done more for the African American community than at least, the last two president if not for as far back as one can remember.
 
Can you honestly, sincerely tell me that you would have 100% defended and even lauded Obama had he tear gassed peaceful protestors who were not even breaking curfew?
 
St. John’s Episcopal church has a long history with many president’s being
Episcopalian and many president’s attending that church who were of other faiths.
President Trump was married in an Episcopal church and attends an Episcopal
church occassionally for services when he is in Florida. I don’t know how
damaged the church was, but just because he didn’t go inside doesn’t mean anything.
Having grown up in the Episcopal church, long ago I chose as irrelevant most anything spoken about by any Bishop in the Episcopal church.

People choosing to be enraged by the President walking over to the church and holding a Bible need to get a life instead of using every waking moment being angry with anything and everything that President Trump says and does.
These are the sad people.
