Ryan has won 7 terms in a democrat district where Obama won by 4% in 2008. 1 in 5 people who voted for Obama voted by Ryan who won 65%
This tells me that the district was less purely 'Democratic" and more Independent (or hybrid). šŸ˜‰

Even if its true. Just like Bush should never have said that Social Security needed to be reformed…even though it still is true. People don’t like to hear the truth. They prefer stuff like:

Today is the day that the earth begins to heal…

Today is the day the oceans begin to recede…

That type of fluffy, empty, meaningless drivel.
You mean like the speeches Reagan used to deliver? A shining city on the hill…

Could be, the seniors don’t like any discussion of people messing with their welfare, even if the changes wouldn’t affect them. On the other hand, Ryan does have ideas, something which Romney has none of.
Oh, I wouldn’t say that. I’m a senior and if they do something different with my kids, and grandkids social security, they will hopefully improve the outcome for them. I guess I am an optimist.

What makes me extremely angry, is the fact that they have been stealing our social security for other things, and now they have to reform it entirely. And this has been Democrats and Republicans alike! WASHINGTON is broken…the entire CULTURE is broken…CULTURE OF CORRUPTION best describes the situation. Both sides of the isle are too busy finagling their way back into office to even give two hoots about Main Street. None of them are really noble in doing the right thing for the people. Sorry…excuse the rant.😊

BTW…I think Ryan is a great choice!

I’m amazed at what people will let the wealthy right get away with as long as the are pro-life and hate gay people.
I’m amazed at what people will let the wealthy left get away with as long as they claim to care about the poor - abortion, ā€œgay marriage,ā€ etc. 🤷

It would be interesting for someone to take a few polls:
  1. Senior Citizens reaction to Ryan
  2. Catholic reaction to Ryan
etc. etc.

Personally, I don’t know what the majority thinks, but as for me, I think he is a great choice.

Didn’t the role of Vice-President become somewhat more active since the years of Clinton and Gore? Of course, another function of the VP is to become President (or assume the responsibilities of the President) in case the unthinkable happens.
Other than speeches, what has Biden been doing?

Who hates gay people, and what are the wealthy ā€œgetting away withā€? Obama refuses to prosecute Goldman-Sachs, et al., for their involvement in the collapse of the housing market, even though the credit default swaps were created by Sachs as a way to move bad mortgage debt around and eventually have it acquired by Fanny Mae as a part of TARP.

Entertaining conservatives by constantly walked around with his foot in his mouth and his head up his…
Scott, I guess great minds think alike. My immediate thought was Biden is searching for a cure to hoof in mouth disease. He’s the gift that keeps on giving.

I must have missed it…when did Mitt Romney win the Republican nomination? I wish Paul Ryan all of the best. I just hope he has not been one of the many representatives that vote to pass budgets with funds for Planned Parenthood in them.

Yes the ever courageous Obama ā€œJusticeā€ Department is far more worried that a small guitar company imported the wrong kind of wood than the corrupt and evil Goldmann group. Despite the near destruction of our financial system NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON HAS GONE TO JAIL!

I am really tired of Leftists saying the Republican party ā€˜protects the rich.’ Clearly Obama has toadied up to the Wall Street, Fanny Mae/Freddy Mac, Union officials while simultaneously ignoring the plight of normal American people who want to build a home despite a puddle in their yards, those working in offshore drilling, those who WOULD work on the Keystone Pipeline if he’d get the heck outta the way.

Tell me how the Left maintains its image of being for the poor and downtrodden…oh yeah they must love the poor, they’ve created so many more of them.

Getting back to the thread though:D I am delighted with the choice of Paul Ryan who has the knowledge to help solve our nation’s financial problems and able to articulate these solutions. I look forward to his debate with Joe Biden who’s often wrong but never in doubt!

Sorry, I’m not privy to Biden’s contributions to Obama in their Cabinet meetings and private discussions. Officially, I’m not aware of any specific activities. Yes, the role of the VP depends to a large extent on the personality of the President. What I meant in my previous comment was that the VP is, in the modern era, not necessarily just a figurehead or a tie-breaker in the Senate. His (name removed by moderator)ut on areas of expertise, such as foreign-policy experience, is more valuable to the President than it was in the past, I believe.

Look back in the thread. His votes regarding Life issues are well spelled out. He is a great VP pick, a strong practicing Catholic, with in depth knowledge of economic issues. If you have any questions get on YouTube and watch his speech at Georgetown.

From an audio interview in 2005-guess he was running for something different then. 🤷

There’s also a video on youtube taken from his facebook page in 2009 where he says Rand’s thinking was ā€œsorely needed right nowā€

National ambitions can definitely change a person.
Economic thinking? He does not agree with her philosophy, he said in a National review interview

Great post! Pro-life encompasses not only being anti-abortion but also helping the poor and downtrodden, reducing international conflict and war, behaving with charity and equity toward others, and taking measures so that we have clean air, clean water, safe food, and a sustainable environment. Without the latter, life on Earth will cease to exist for our children and grandchildren, and they won’t have to worry about the economy, the deficit, employment, health care, or Social Security.

Bringing a respect for human dignity to practical politics can be a daunting task. There is such a wide spectrum of issues involving the protection of human life and the promotion of human dignity. Good people frequently disagree on which problems to address, which policies to adopt and how best to apply them. But for citizens and elected officials alike, the basic principle is simple: We must begin with a commitment never to intentionally kill, or collude in the killing, of any innocent human life, no matter how broken, unformed, disabled or desperate that life may seem. In other words, the choice of certain ways of acting is always and radically incompatible with the love of God and the dignity of the human person created in His image. Direct abortion is never a morally tolerable option. It is always a grave act of violence against a woman and her unborn child. This is so even when a woman does not see the truth because of the pressures she may be subjected to, often by the child’s father, her parents or friends. Similarly, euthanasia and assisted suicide are never acceptable acts of mercy. They always gravely exploit the suffering and desperate, extinguishing life in the name of the ā€œquality of lifeā€ itself. This same teaching against direct killing of the innocent condemns all direct attacks on innocent civilians in time of war.

Uh Reagan was giving credit to AMERICA, whereas Obama was claiming HE would lower the oceans and heal the planet. Humility thy name is NOT Barack

In 2005, Ryan said that ā€œThe reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Randā€, and ā€œI grew up reading Ayn Rand and it taught me quite a bit about who I am and what my value systems are, and what my beliefs are. It’s inspired me so much that it’s required reading in my office for all my interns and my staff.ā€.

ā€œit’s so important that we go back to our roots to look at Ayn Rand’s visionā€

Paul Ryan 2005
You will not find a quote from Ryan agreeing with Rand’s philosophy or objectivist beliefs. He admits he was influenced by her defense of capitalism and economic ideas
ā€œI, like millions of young people in America, read Rand’s novels when I was young. I enjoyed them,ā€ Ryan says. ā€œThey spurred an interest in economics, in the Chicago School and Milton Friedman,ā€ a subject he eventually studied as an undergraduate at Miami University in Ohio. ā€œBut it’s a big stretch to suggest that a person is therefore an Objectivist.ā€
ā€œI reject her philosophy,ā€ Ryan says firmly. ā€œIt’s an atheist philosophy. It reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview. If somebody is going to try to paste a person’s view on epistemology to me, then give me Thomas Aquinas,ā€ who believed that man needs divine help in the pursuit of knowledge. ā€œDon’t give me Ayn Rand,ā€ he says.

I’d agree, Of all the Republican VO short-listers, Ryan was best-liked by seniors, per the Rasmussen Poll. Perhaps that is because seniors tend to be more fiscally prudent, and realize that Medicare as it currently exists cannot survive.

Also, somewhat counterintuitively, despite all the Obama ads showing Ryan pushing old ladies off the edge of a dock, a USAToday poll found senior citizens were the group that most favored Ryan’s budget proposal.
I don’t know if the reasoning is ā€œfiscal prudence,ā€ or the reasoning is that not all senior citizens are dependent on Medicare. That would be a major factor. Second factor would be the current age of these seniors, which presumes being safe from personal liability due to future Medicare changes. Doubtful any bill would pass which cuts off current seniors.
I think the democrats are over-reaching in their response, as shown by all the left wing pundits crowing that this is the worst VP choice ever, the race is as good as done with, etc,. etc. Every chance must be taken in every context to make your political opponent look not simply incompetent, but somehow simultaneously both evil AND incompetent.
Well that’s pretty standard political response; nothing new here.
