We do care very deeply about the poor. Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney do as well, the thing we need to get away from is measuring our “care for the poor” in (name removed by moderator)ut, and focus on outcomes. Massive government programs that throw money at a problem have been going on forever, and do we have less poor? No. We have more. A new philosophy of how to care for the poor is needed.

Also, our main mission is to evangelize and bring people to the One True Church. When it comes to electing leaders, however, there is no more important issue than protecting human life, the Holy Father’s and Magisterium have made that incredibly clear.

Putting economics above pro-life issues, first of all is a false dichotomy, and also runs contrary to our faith and that which our leaders and shepherds teach us.

God bless.

:We do care very deeply about the poor. Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney do as well"—what do you base that on. Most of Romney’s tithe’s go to his church, which in turn uses vast sums to lobby against gay rights and other social justice issues. That’s money for politics, not the poor.

Our main mission is to spread the Faith and help everyone get to heaven. Promoting the death of a million unborn children a year is not part of our mission; propagating gay marriage is not part of our mission; restricting religious liberty is not part of our mission; deconstructing family structure is not part of our mission, promoting contraception among teens is not part of our mission. Those are things we hope to prevent and to keep the government from promoting as national policy.
I agree, I just question the motives of the alternative. I’m not willing to blindly trust these people just because they’re not the other guy.

To state that Paul Ryan is “a faithful Catholic” is presumptuous at best. The Lord knows his heart, you don’t.

One concern: he is a longtime devotee of novelist and anti-statist Ayn Rand (though he’s tried to back-pedal from that association). Rand was a vehement atheist. How was it so easy for him to embrace her godless philosophy?
Oh please. Don’t listen to the lies. I enjoy J.K. Rowling, who supports Mr. Obama, so now all of a sudden ibecause I read a book I’m an Obama supporter? Get real.

One can believe in a government philosophy and not share everything in common with Ayn Rand. Its a scare tactic!

And there is absolutely nothing to suggest Paul Ryan is anything but a faithful Catholic. He is obedient to the Bishops, he is vehemently pro-life, has never voted anything other than pro-life, has been a model Catholic in a political environment filled with heterodox Catholics that give lip service to their faith.

Don’t believe the scare tactics!

God bless.

Back up a bit and this canard was thoroughly destroyed many posts ago. That’s one of the problems of jumping into a long thread and not reading what has already been discussed. Time to stop beating that dead horse.

Lisa
I guess it wasn’t “thoroughly destroyed.”

If Romney doesn’t pay his tithe’s he won’t get to become a god of his own planet one day! And I have serious doubt that they are deeply concerned about the poor. Look and Ryan’s budget and see who benefits. Listen to Romney talk about just letting the chips fall where they may…he has no idea about the struggles of the poor, just because he writes off a big heck every year to get his tax deduction!

Both Ryan and Romney have public records. They are not unknown quantities. So does President Obama: he is known to be the most pro-abortion, anti-Catholic president, at least in my lifetime, and that’s quite a long time. The Democratic Party Platform will endorse gay marriage and abortion rights. The GOP platform will not.

What do you base your smear of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan on?

We can play this game all night, followyourbliss. Please don’t believe the lies that the left-wing is throwing out there to scare people from voting for these two upstanding men.

There is no reason to doubt that they do not have a deep love of this country…and ALL of its people.

God bless.

I just don’t base my vote on a candidate’s position on Catholic values. If you do, you’re in a quandry, right. After all, Ryan is running for Veep. Romney is running on the top of the ticket and he’s supported pro-choice positions and probably will agin if it’s politically expedient. How to rectify that?

Anti-Catholic? Wow.

He is also very loyal when it comes to voting for budget busting legislation yet tries to come off as some strict economic conservative.

World Net Daily, The National Enquirer and such publications are not simply sensationalism and quite frequently have stories no one else will publish that turn out to be right on the money. Can we say Jonathan Edwards who was ignored by the MSM until he was basically caught fleeing Rielle Hunter’s hotel room. So to discount them completely would be arrogant.

But opinion pieces in ANY media are just that, opinions. The piece you linked to was obviously a political hit piece by the opposition. If you come out saying the subject of your article isn’t truthful, knowledgeable or a conservative your cred is gone. But those who are predisposed to the same opinion can hoot and toot “LOOK!!! This guy agrees with me, he must be brilliant.”

I lean far to the Right but I also take various editorials, op eds and articles from my side with a grain of salt. I can distinguish between someone who’s the world’s greatest expert on their own opinion and someone who actually knows of what they speak. That being said, I think Paul Ryan is honest, a strong conservative and very knowlegeable about economic matters. If I had any complaint it’s that he and Romney both have the same strengths and I might have been searching for someone who added a different element of expertise or experience.

That being said, Romney could have picked Mickey Mouse and I’d still vote for him over Obama who I think is the worst president in recent history.

Lisa
I’m not so sure Romney and Ryan have the same strengths. I agree with you that Ryan appears (politically) honest and is a strong social, if not always fiscal, conservative, while I don’t attribute either of these characteristics to Romney, who has always been something of a weather vane with regard to his political ideology. Further, Romney has experience as a governor, whereas Ryan is more of a Washington insider, having been a congressman for many years. It is true, however, that the strength of both men lay in their economic knowledge more so than in foreign affairs, but that is probably the case for many former Presidents, most of whom learn quickly how to assume the role of commander-in-chief. BTW, Romney would never have picked Mickey Mouse since the latter is essentially a democrat according to reliable reports.

Romney just handed Obama the senior vote on a silver platter.

What a moronic selection.
I’m a senior voter and I did NOT vote for Obama in 2008 and I will NOT vote for him this time. I do not know why any one, over the age of two, would vote would vote for Obama.:coffeeread:👋

True. Ryan supported all the runaway spending and debt ceiling increases in the Bush years. I guess he thinks we’re not paying attention

Speculation, conjecture, and a smear campaign.

I vote MY Catholic values, my conscience formed in line with Church Teaching as advised by the Holy Father’s of the past, and the Catechism and Magisterium.

To vote for a candidate that wants to infringe on our rights as Catholics is ludicrous.

I hope you will come around to see the folly of this position.

God bless.

I suggest you read a little bit more on Paul Ryan to understand why these things happen when you are an elected official.

It’s different than voting “present” or voting “no” to a bill that would’ve prevented partial-birth abortion.

God bless.

Folly?

The founders of the nations, in one of their more enlightened moments, opted to support religious freedom, the right to worship as you choose, whether you are Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Mormon, Muslim, atheist, whatever.

I don’t believe that any one of those faiths has the right to impose it’s beliefs on the nation–that would be tantamount to establishing a government religion and that would be unconstitutional. Render under Caesar . . . .

You’re free to vote based on your principles or faith. But I don’t need to agree with you.

Yes, well freedom of religion is being infringed upon by this president. I would not vote for a candidate that was infringing on your rights, I don’t know why anyone would vote for this man who infringes on mine. Government is supposed to govern, not dictate.

You can vote for whom you choose of course, but do not vote for a candidate based on smear campaigns and falsehoods, investigate the facts. And the fact is Mr. Obama is persecuting the Catholic faith and is infringing on our rights. If you vote for him, at least acknowledge that. Don’t make excuses for the man.

Do you mean to tell me you don’t think the right is spreading lies and have used unprecedented sabotage for the entire term of the current president. Willing to hold our country hostage, unwilling to compromise on anything, using the filabuster to block any thing and everything even common sense thigs that everyone can agree on, having our credit downgraded so they can turn around and blame it on him. The hate I have witnessed by the right is abhorrent and I do not, as a Catholic, identify with people willing to use those kind of desperate tactics in order to regain the “POWER”!!! And using Catholics and whoever else they can for their own political gain. It’s disgusting. It makes me sick. The money alone spent on these stupid campaigns could cut the debt in half.

If you think that Romney might support pro-choice positions, does that you support a man who is so proabort that he voted against a bill that would make sure that babies born after a boutched abortion would get medical treatment. In my book, that makes Obama a proabortionist, at the very least :onpatrol::slapfight:
