The reason for establishing public broadcasting years ago was because getting decent educational programming must be government funding because the commercial networks will go for the lowest common denominator–ie. Fear Factor and all the other unsavory schlock. It is certainly true that commercial radio is no better. Listen to the shock jocks in the morning.
If you want good, educational TV it cannot be dependent on the market. One only needs to look what the market gives us vis-a-vis movies and commercial TV.
Most of what is on PBS is completely apolitical. The Civil War documentary, NOVA, Antiques Road Show, Arthur, Sesame Street, etc. I couldn’t live without the intelligent programming on both PBS and NPR. I refuse to get cable and expose my children to all the indecent shows on there.
