The reason for establishing public broadcasting years ago was because getting decent educational programming must be government funding because the commercial networks will go for the lowest common denominator–ie. Fear Factor and all the other unsavory schlock. It is certainly true that commercial radio is no better. Listen to the shock jocks in the morning.

If you want good, educational TV it cannot be dependent on the market. One only needs to look what the market gives us vis-a-vis movies and commercial TV.

Most of what is on PBS is completely apolitical. The Civil War documentary, NOVA, Antiques Road Show, Arthur, Sesame Street, etc. I couldn’t live without the intelligent programming on both PBS and NPR. I refuse to get cable and expose my children to all the indecent shows on there.

Then you didn’t listen to Garrison Kealor during the elections last year!

I knew it all along. He is transparent just like the rest of the NPR/PBS crowd.

Compare Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage with Diane Rehm and Terri Gross, and see which provide more intelligent programs. I’ve yet to hear Mrs. Rehm or Ms. Gross ranting or call their opponents pejorative names.

PBS is similar to the New York Times, LA Times, CBS and Hollywood. They have this unwritten rule that unless your political thinking is left-of-center, you will not be allowed to work there. There are some obvious exceptions, but that is the general rule.

So, moral relativism is acceptable as long as one complies with perceived social conventions?

Yep, the elitism and arrogance of these types is so obvious that to deny it is really absurd.

I think the former, not the latter.

But you miss two big differences: Limbaugh and Savage anounce what they are: conservative, Rehm and Gross will go to the grave claiming they’re neutral, when they are not. Also, Limbaugh and Savage are not subsidized by taxpayers.

Perceived social conventions? Did I accuse Limbaugh of walking around with his fly open and exposing himself?

Compare the content and the intelligence manifested by either those men or those ladies on their broadcasts. That was my point.

Announcement of their political positions and their funding wasn’t the point of my comment.

You consider Limbaugh and Savage (?!) more intelligent? Okay.

I do not listen to Limbaugh, I find him boring. I do listen, at times, to Savage. Are you claiming he is unintelligent? He sounds articulate, well read and has a doctorate from Berekley.

The two ladies you canonize are no more intelligent than the two men. The only difference is one of style.

I understood that. I was just pointing out that your comparison was apples (free market, admitted conservatives) to oranges (government subsidized, falsely neutral).

Limbaugh and Savage are partisons, but they are brilliant partisons. Al Franken is also brilliant. Rehm is close, but Gross is not. (IMO of course)

Hello All,

On the whole, most of the programming on PBS is not Left or Right Leaning. Most “Conservatives” are angry because, unlike FOX News, PBS News doesn’t agree with their beliefs. Are there problems with some of the programming? Well, YES! “Now”, “In the Life”, and “To the Contrary” get under my skin the most. That’s why I applaud an ombusman being appointed. Also, this is PUBLIC TV! The PUBLIC has every right to complain. Since our Tax money and Donations keep the Network running, public (name removed by moderator)ut needs to be given major consideration. Especially at the Local Station level. If your Station does something you do not like, become a member of that Station and File a complaint.

Really, it is the Libertarians who have the strongest argument against Public programming. Of course since this is a Democracy, I have every right to disagree with them and vote to the contrary. I support Public Broadcasting because we need commercial free educational programs and indepth Non-corprate News. The Fact that PBS has reported about the frankly immoral behavior of some corporations is very important. The Frontline documentaries “Is Wal-Mart Good for America” and “The Merchants of Cool” are among the finest reporting ever done. So though there is much debate, I have my opinion and I’m sticking to it. 🙂

Why stop with radio and TV? Let’s have government run newspapers and magazines too. Remember the old “Soviet Life” magazine? Slicker than the U.S. “Life” magazine. And no ads!

We have government run pre-school to 12th grade education. Lots of government run colleges. Government housing and government medical care. So why not government newspapers too?

It is in the “public” interest. And we do live in a “democracy” (not a republic I guess anymore). So let’s get some government periodicals delivered to our homes today!

I agree that most of the programming is not biased. It’s the news and analysis shows on PBS that lack balance. And it isn’t that Fox News “agrees” with our beliefs. It’s that Fox News allows our opinions to be heard, as well as the liberal point of view. We don’t want a one-sided situation on either channel, just balance.

Much better off. Was America a safer place to live with more economic opportunities before or after Mr. Roger’s and all the other drivel on PBS? PBS has created the image that parents can sit their kids in front of the TV and as long as the kids are watching PBS the parents don’t have to do any parenting.

PBS created that image? How about the Cartoon Network, Nickleodeon, and all the mind-rotting cartoon shows on the other networks on Saturday?

It didn’t take PBS to make kids into couch-potatoes being baby-sat by the Tube.

I am listening to NPR right now for the latest on the situation in London. On my way home from work at about 5:40 am, I started to hear the coverage about the bombings in London. Though I tried to give up NPR for more conservative sources like Fox News and the AM news/talk stations, I can not really get into those much.

Fox News and the AM news/talk stations tend to have too many commercials (and yes, the NPR sponsorship announcements seem to get longer and more commercial like all the time, but still not close to those on Fox News and the AM news/talk stations). I no longer donate money to NPR like I used to, investing that money in my local (well, closest to local in Sacramento) Catholic Radio Station. Also I keep in mind that many of the opinion pieces and overall commentary will slant left.

PBS created the image that the kids were safe watching their programming, once the parents left the kids alone with the TV the kids changed the channel and watch the trash you are talking about. Parents need to be watching what their kids watch and limiting the amount of TV, no matter where it comes from.

When I was a kid, I left home after breakfast and played ball, cowboys and Indians, rode a bike, etc till dinner (lunch up here in the north) then went back and played till supper with no adult supervision and never got into trouble. I realize those days are gone when a parent could just let their kids run around the neighborhood and feel safe with no adult watching them but kids should be outside not watching TV. I know some moms have to work and don’t want their kids outside so they let them watch TV all day, I don’t have the answer but it just seems that as a nation we should be able to give these moms an alternative. Just my opinion, which with $2.25 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbuck’s.
