Don’t forget the dangerous, liberal PBS shows like Antiques Roadshow, Masterpiece Theater, The American Experience, Nova, Nature, Austin City Limits, etc. If intelligent and thought-provoking television programs are considered “liberal,” then what programs would be considered “conservative?” Fear Factor?
The programs that would be considered “conservative” are those that do not share the views conveyed by the Bill Moyers Foundation. Further, The American Experience and Nova both fail to provide the full spectrum of information.

I’m confused. What do you mean by “the full spectrum of information”?

What? Nova and the American Experience are biased? Holy cow. You are looking too hard for bias, my friend. Watch those shows. They’re very well-produced, and fascinating, and thought-provoking. Let go of “Fear Factor” TV.

It is difficult for me to understand how anyone, especially on the conservative side, would not fully support and even donate to PBS…

On these forums I read considerable complaining about commercial TV - the sex in commercials, sex in shows (gays, lesbians, general promiscuity), drugs, violence, liberal control, and on and on and on…

But on PBS there are NO commercials, NO sex, NO violence and, except for Bill Moyers, almost none of the dreaded “liberal bias”. They do have opera, music, ballet, literature, art, and general culture. These rarely contain a liberal agenda.

Here is something which answers all your problems and yet lacks universal support. Makes me wonder just what some are complaining about and how serious they are.

How much does my family watch PBS?

My daughters have memorized the local PBS station telephone number after years of viewing some of ‘the best and favorite’ shows during annual fund drives. It is the joke around here. What is Channel 21 PBS’s telephone number?

Oh I know!

  1. Government funded media outlets violate every tenet of conservatism.
  2. Bill Moyers. Why would any Christian, Catholics especially, fund a station which promoted Joseph Campbell? PBS represents the elite liberal WASP establishment (Unitarian types)*, reform Judaism and agnosticism. It is hostile to traditional Christianity–both Protestant and Catholic.
  3. All the other employees. Let them compete in the real market. Why should they get taxpayer money because their mommy and daddy are members of the liberal establishment? Why perpuate a political class at the expense of those who could not afford to get a worthless degree from an Ivy League university?
** I know. I was one. PBS could do a show on rock formations and I’ld detect the condescending WASPY attitude. Don’t ever think those at PBS see viewers as equal. They don’t. They are the nobility trying to educate the rabble-- futile as it may be. *

I don’t have a television, so I don’t get to watch PBS, but I love and support NPR.

What’s not to love? Even conservatives should be able to appreciate Prairie Home Companion; .
Funny it’s what I most DETEST about PBS. I find that program inane and annoying. Blech! I also find that the only people who like it are liberals.

Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers; Thistle and Shamrock, Mary McPartland Jazz, Midnight Special, and the other entertainment programs…
I like some of those programs. I think jlw hit the nail on the head when he said that it’s the POLITICAL stuff that gets them into trouble. When they do a documentary or host something like Antique Roadshow it’s fine. When they start into rant mode about how dangerous a praying President is, they basically alienate a large percentage of their potential audience.

Richardols:
And the news is always in-depth…
And far to the left.

Yes, the opinion shows, like Terry Gross’s, tend to be liberal, but surely even conservatives can gain by being exposed to other viewpoints.
Tend??? Terri Gross is beyond the left side but that’s another issue. FWIW I USED to be a regular donor to PBS. I used to listen to the radio from 11 am (Talk of the Nation) until I left work. I will admit their post 9/11 coverage was excellent.

But when we started ramping up for the 2004 elections, they went stark raving nuts. I couldn’t listen to the shows without wanting to toss my overpriced CCRadio out the window. Further they admit being biased. When they called me wanting to renew my monthly donation I said not just no but h**l no. The man asked why and I said because it was biased, leftist, and totally unbalanced. His reply “Well because the MSM is SO RIGHT WING we have to balance it…”

That is a man who lives in his own little world and listens to transmissions on his tin foil hat.

I agree don’t give them one thin dime of tax dollars. If they are legitimate they can raise their own funding.

Well, he has sold out twice when his program came from Hot Springs, here in Arkansas, and a lot of those people had to be conservatives. But, each to his or her own taste. My favorites are Mary McPartland, Bob Parloche Jazz, the Tappet Bros. (but they can be annoying, too.) and Midnight Special. It does indeed take a strong stomach to stand Keillor’s singing.
And far to the left.
Morning Report? I don’t see it.
Terri Gross is beyond the left side but that’s another issue.
Well, there’s something to be said about listening to a viewpoint opposite your own. But, I understand. I can’t stand 30 seconds from Limbaugh.

I give to NPR, not to PBS. No point in it - I don’t own a television.

David Paul and Lisa N have hit the nail on the head. PBS/NPR is predictable and far left in most ways.

I have to comment on Prarie Home Companion. It is a lib fav. What I do not get is why people find it entertaining. Each time I have heard the show it is always a variation on the same theme.

Hello All,

As I have stated before: I have some reservations about Public Broadcasting, but all in all I support PBS/NPR. The Fact is most “Conservative” mouthpeices see bias anywhere people disagree with them. Obviously “Now”, “In the Life”, and certain episodes of “P.O.V.” are obnoxiusly Liberal; but that does not detract from the Network as a whole. “Nova”, The News Hour", “Masterpeice Theatre”, “Nightly Business Report”, “ITN World News”, “Globe Trekker”, “Secrets of the Dead”, “History Detectives”, “Tavis Smiley”, “Charlie Rose”, “Battlefield Britian”, and “Frontline” are some of the Best Shows on TV. Not to mention the Kids programs like “Sesame Street”, “Mister Rogers Neighborhood”, and “Reading Rainbow” which are all First class, Toy commercial free entertainment.

Most of the News on PBS is objective and balanced. “The News Hour” and “The Maclaughlin Group” feature representatives from all sides of an issue. Are all reports 100% fair and balanced? Of course not. There are some reports and individuals who make me want to pull out my moustache hair. But, as a whole, PBS is far better than the Corporate Propaganda on CNN, FOX, and ABC.

Does PBS/NPR need to work on its objectivity? Of course. An ombusman is a good start. Really what needs to happen is more viewer involvement. We have to remember PBS/NPR are PUBLIC Broadcasting outlets. They need to respond to the people. The best way get Public Broadcasting stations to be more responsive is for more people to be members of their local stations. Irregardless of how much the government gives, the stations still need financial support from viewers. In turn, if the Network broadcasts an offensive program or segment, the members of that Station have every right to complain. The Stations are likely to be far more responsive to complaints coming from their paying members than to people who never give a cent. It is the viewers who really need to be the watchdog of the Network. If you see someting you don’t like, call up the station with your membership card in hand. So let’s put the Public back into Public Broadcasting! :dancing:

Good Lord, woman! Have you gone mad? Don’t let the right-wingers here know that you’ve actually listened to the program!

Do you think I am female? I have listened to him many times, not by choice. I want to yell at the radio and tell him I get it already. MN is cold, he thinks Lutherans are uptight, Ketchup…how many times is that funny?

Both PBS/NPR have a big liberal slant. Can we agree with that? I agree FOX news has a conservative slant.

Why do they need government money?

PBS’s Bill Moyers attacks Christianity and promotes heresy. His Joseph Campbell is a pantheist. Long ago the Catholic Church declared that pantheism was a heresy. Campbell mocked Christianity by calling the Resurrection of Christ a “clown act” and our God an abomination…

Moyers promoted Elaine Pagels, a religion professor at Princeton, who agreed with Moyers that Christianity treated sexuality as being dirty. They said they believed that the pagans’ approach to sex was more joyous. This sounded like an ‘elitist’ promotion of S&M clubs.

If PBS wants to preach this intolerance toward Christianity and proselytize the merits of vice, they shouldn’t use my tax money to do so

RikasAngel…let me try to make the objection more clear: a free press is just that. It is not “public”. American should not have taxpayer funded media. I don’t care if 90% of what PBS puts on is neutral. This is not the job of government. I would not want a conservative government run station either.

We can see what happens with State TV by listening to the people at PBS and their supporters. They really do not believe that are liberal. They believe what they put on is…normal. They cannot grasp others do not see it that way.

Several supporters of PBS has praised the news at PBS as being impartial. Yikes! Of course it is partisan. Putting conservatives on doesn’t make it neutral. For instance, David Gergen does not speak for Republicans but PBS thinks he does. Conservativess and Republicans are as much opposed to most of those PBS puts on as “conservatives” as they are to far left wingers such as Bill Moyers. Maybe even more.

I thought that based on the continuing and number of complaints the “head office” has received that getting an ombudsman was a right move. It showed response, concern and an attempt to present balanced broadcasting in the news and POV programming. However the “people of choice” don’t want it – they are demanding in numerous articles and quotes to let him play the role of John The Baptist without Salome even dancing. If that’s going to be the case, then let them pay for it.
