I get very confused when people compare NPR or PBS to Fox or right-wing radio talk. There is no comparison–especially with right-wing radio talk. I have listened to Limbaugh and Savage, and these guys just go on rants and don’t let the other side have a say. They screen the calls and get all these “ditto-heads” or yes-men who call in and when somebody does disagree they use insults and invective.
NPR talk hosts–even Terri Gross–have people of all political stripes on and ask all of them tough questions. When Diane Riehm talks about current affairs she has journalists from the left and the right on together and they debate. I don’t know how people can accuse NPR, the only intelligent radio, of being left-wing biased.
Furthermore, just because somebody likes Prairie Home Companion doesn’t mean that they are a leftie for goodness sake. I love it because I am from Wisconsin and can relate to his stories. I think his Guy whatever his name is detective tales are lame, and I am not fond of the music, but I love his Lake Wobegone stories.
The whole purpose of public TV and radio is not to go for the lowest common denominator. We get enough of that with commercial radio and TV.
