Mike Pence debates Kamala Harris this evening in the only debate to take place between the current VP and VP candidate before the election. Apparently the topics to be discussed haven’t been revealed yet.

I expect less insults and more substance than in the first Trump-Biden debate. Should be an interesting one.

Vice Presidential Debate: Kamala Harris vs. Mike Pence, Wednesday October 7 at 9PM EST, the first & only VP debate World News
This could be more important than other VP debates with the speculation that Joe Biden, if elected, would not complete his term.
It doesn’t matter to me. I did see Mike Pence’s married daughter penned a pro-life article in one of the websites online.

When you say she penned a pro-life thread, do you mean she wrote an article?

VP debates tend not to matter as much and are often described as non events, but I’ve been reading that this one, given the heated campaign and first debate Trump had with Biden, could draw a lot more interest.

There is also talk of how if Trump doesn’t manage to recover properly in time, the first debate between Trump and Biden could have been their last and this might be the last debate that takes place between the two sides (I doubt that though).
How many hours from now?
About 14 hours from now. It starts at 9pm [EST?] in the US (although I think it might be 7pm local time in Salt Lake City, Utah). In Europe it’s a 2 or 3am in most countries, and even later in a few others to the East.

Thanks, I am in Aus.

Ah okay. You have different time zones over there right? I suppose you’ll be watching some time in the morning or early afternoon then, if you watch it at all that is.

It will be televised live, like the presidential debate, 13 hrs from now is about 11 am Thursday.
I think much more intelligence will be on display 😀

Okay, it looks like she was interviewed. It’s a piece about her, with quotes from her, but not written by her.

I think this debate is the most important of the debates sceduled.

I am completely convinced that if VP Biden/Sen Harris win the election, he will resign the Presidency within a few months (probably will wait until after Christmas so he and his family can enjoy a beautiful Christmas in the White House–I don’t blame them!–and lead the country in the celebration).

I think that he is working very hard and his campaign staff working even harder to minimize his age-related deficiencies. I’m not criticizing him for these–everyone gets old, and it’s icky, especially when you have been a public servant to your country pretty much all your life.

But at least he will have been President of the United States–a proud achievement.

And then, Kamala Harris will take over…and that’s when I believe all the Christians who voted for Biden/Harris will realize the awful thing that has happened.

The policies that she advocates are horrible and IMO, are not consistent with the U.S. that many of us know and love.

So it’s important that we listen to this debate between Sen. Harris and VP Pence knowing that there’s a good chance that she will become the President. I don’t think that VP Pence wil ever have to take over the Presidency from Pres. Trump, but it’s certainly possible–Pres. Trump is no spring chicken himself and could become incapacitated; indeed, some say that he already is, and I’m not totally rejecting that. I’ve seen people on certain meds, and they really do act very strangely.

I’m at the point where I believe we need to amend the U.S. Constitution to establish an upper age limit for the Presidency. When the age limit was determined, I think it was rare for people to live past 70 and still be hale and hearty. Now it’s common for people to live into their 80s and 90s and sometimes still be working! So I think we need to be sensible and recognize that this job of President of the U.S. is simply too demanding for those who are up there in years.

Do you really think the plan is to put Harris in as president right after Biden wins it, and he’s only running so he can have a few months in the White House and put that feather in his cap before he hands over the presidency to Harris?

I’ve heard this theory too but it seems very far fetched, because

a) Why couldn’t she have just entered the race for president herself? I think, given how much identity politics is played in the Democratic Party, she probably stood more of a chance then Biden. I’m actually surprised Biden got the nomination to be honest, given that he’s an old white, something Democrats seem to despise.

and

b) I think she would have been a stronger candidate against Trump in a head to head for the same reason, identity politics. I really don’t think that many liberals are particularly keen on Biden, but a lot of them are probably still going to vote for him just to try to get Trump out of the White House. I think they’d be much keener on voting for somebody like Harris, just because she’s a non white woman.

As for the debate, given how strongly pro-life Pence is, and how that was pretty much supposed to be the main reason he left the Democratic Party, I’d like him to grill Harris on this a bit, and also on the fact that in 2018 she gave a nominee to sit on a district court in Nebraska an extremely hard time for being in the Knights of Columbus, and questioned him on whether he realised the organisation opposed a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion, when he joined.

If that’s her mindset, then she’s probably going to have a problem with any Catholic candidate for anything. Being anti-abortion is the position of the Catholic Church.

I know this won’t make a great deal of difference to non-religious liberals who are pro-abortion anyway, but it might make a few more Catholics think about whether they really want to vote for Biden/Harris.

Good points in your post.

I know I sound like an old fuddy-duddy (and I’m a woman!), but I do not believe the country is ready to vote for a woman for President. Vice Pres, yes. But President–I think a lot of people on the fence would either not vote, or vote for the Republican ticket, or for a third party ticket.

I’m not saying they are right to be opposed to a woman president. Many countries have women leaders and they do just fine. But I think that we still have too many “Greatest Generation” people and older Baby Boomers who just don’t think it is right to put a woman in charge of the country.

But what if the woman is the best candidate?

Well, let’s consider Sen. Harris. She has an interesting history. I remember back during the primaries seeing Democratic publications in which her own words/speeches/writings were used to show that she has wiffle-waffled on issues for years. One year she’s gaga for this issue, the next year, she will be opposed to that same issue. Multiple incidents of back-tracking–she seems to be someone who is easily swayed and doesn’t really have a viewpoint of her own, but is controlled by other interest groups.

This could hurt her in the election. It could be argued that she is willing to change her opinion when more facts are known, and that’s a good thing. But most people would see a constantly-changing opinion as a weakness, including many Independents and right-leaning Democrats.

I do think and hope with all my heart that Catholics and other pro-life Christians will think really really hard when they are filling out that mail-in ballot or standing in the voting booth–they may hate Pres. Trump’s personality, and hate the divisions in the U.S. right now, but when all the pro-life organizations are endorsing him and calling him the greatest pro-life President ever–how can a pro-life person possibly vote for a ticket (Biden/Harris) that is overtly pro-abortion, even in the late term of pregnancy?

I think that issue will be tough for pro-life people–I would NOT want to be a Biden/Harris voter and see them win and overturn all of Pres. Trump’s pro-life policies, and work hard to get rid of the Hyde Amendment. That evil would be not only on the heads of the President, but on the heads of those who voted for him/her. And it will be difficult to prove that all the Democratic Party aid to poor women is causing them to choose life instead of death for their unborn children. I hope so…but I think when a law says “It’s OK,” people will choose the Easy Path.

I would really like to hear Pence too, he doesnt get much of a go , at least from what arrives here,

I think it’s doubtful Biden will resign mid-presidency but running for re-election in 2024 does seem like a stretch. Bernie Sanders seems to be well-intact mentally in his old age but Biden has some pretty noticeable issues that won’t get any better 4 years from now.
