a) Why couldn’t she have just entered the race for president herself? I think, given how much identity politics is played in the Democratic Party, she probably stood more of a chance then Biden. I’m actually surprised Biden got the nomination to be honest, given that he’s an old white, something Democrats seem to despise.
Good points in your post.
I know I sound like an old fuddy-duddy (and I’m a woman!), but I do not believe the country is ready to vote for a woman for President. Vice Pres, yes. But President–I think a lot of people on the fence would either not vote, or vote for the Republican ticket, or for a third party ticket.
I’m not saying they are right to be opposed to a woman president. Many countries have women leaders and they do just fine. But I think that we still have too many “Greatest Generation” people and older Baby Boomers who just don’t think it is right to put a woman in charge of the country.
But what if the woman is the best candidate?
Well, let’s consider Sen. Harris. She has an interesting history. I remember back during the primaries seeing Democratic publications in which her own words/speeches/writings were used to show that she has wiffle-waffled on issues for years. One year she’s gaga for this issue, the next year, she will be opposed to that same issue. Multiple incidents of back-tracking–she seems to be someone who is easily swayed and doesn’t really have a viewpoint of her own, but is controlled by other interest groups.
This could hurt her in the election. It could be argued that she is willing to change her opinion when more facts are known, and that’s a good thing. But most people would see a constantly-changing opinion as a weakness, including many Independents and right-leaning Democrats.
I do think and hope with all my heart that Catholics and other pro-life Christians will think really really hard when they are filling out that mail-in ballot or standing in the voting booth–they may hate Pres. Trump’s personality, and hate the divisions in the U.S. right now, but when all the pro-life organizations are endorsing him and calling him the greatest pro-life President ever–how can a pro-life person possibly vote for a ticket (Biden/Harris) that is overtly pro-abortion, even in the late term of pregnancy?
I think that issue will be tough for pro-life people–I would NOT want to be a Biden/Harris voter and see them win and overturn all of Pres. Trump’s pro-life policies, and work hard to get rid of the Hyde Amendment. That evil would be not only on the heads of the President, but on the heads of those who voted for him/her. And it will be difficult to prove that all the Democratic Party aid to poor women is causing them to choose life instead of death for their unborn children. I hope so…but I think when a law says “It’s OK,” people will choose the Easy Path.
