Our little Catholic church has an organ – but we don’t have anyone who can play it. If we didn’t have guitars, we’d have no music at all.
Let’s also be aware of why they are on the endangered species list. It’s because the progressive element decided that “the spirit of Vatican II” required that organs be abandoned, even ripped out. Even when the actual documents of Vatican II stated “In the Latin Church the pipe organ is to be held in high esteem, for it is the traditional musical instrument which adds a wonderful splendor to the Church’s ceremonies and powerfully lifts up man’s mind to God and to higher things.”II’m not sure if my original idea has been lost in this discussion. I was trying to make the point that Catholics who are opposed to all other music besides pipe organ need to understand that pipe organs and those who play them are on the endangered species list.
Unfortunately that’s so true.Let’s also be aware of why they are on the endangered species list. It’s because the progressive element decided that “the spirit of Vatican II” required that organs be abandoned, even ripped out.
I’ve PLAYED accordion masses before. Don’t knock it. My playing brings people to tears. You guys are being way to hard on the bassoon, After all, it’s not an accordian!

I’m rather fond of the pipes me-self.The only holy instrument is the piob mor.![]()
We’ll have a drop o’ th’ craythure and play a slip-jig or two.I’m rather fond of the pipes me-self.

But there is hope! Ours got ripped out in 67 and replaced in 92 and we’ve not looked back. And we sing from a proper choir loft. We’re not the center of attraction! And hey, my music reading ability leaves a lot to be desired. I can sorta/kinda read music but in the final analysis I memorize my part. If cassette tapes work for my cathedral choir, they can work for any parish choir. Practice, practice, practice.Let’s also be aware of why they are on the endangered species list. Imagine how much different the situation would be today if people had just followed the actual text of Vatican II.
Vern, we have a Celtic choir here in Baton Rouge. If they didn’t sing at the same time I do, I’d have joint choir membership. We’ll have a drop o’ th’ craythure and play a slip-jig or two.![]()
I was raised in Lake Charles in my early days – I still remember the Kilties of MacNeese College (now MacNeese University.)Vern, we have a Celtic choir here in Baton Rouge. If they didn’t sing at the same time I do, I’d have joint choir membership.![]()
The most holy instrument would be the instrument with the most holes…I guess that would be the pipe organ.Yer all a bunch a Sassenach amadans. The only holy instrument is the piob mor.![]()
Way to go!!! Drums can also be played reverentially. God is to be worshiped with all our mind, heart, soul and all our strength.1 Paralipomenon 13
8 And David and all Israel played before God with all their might with hymns, and with harps, and with psalteries, and timbrels, and cymbals, and trumpets,
1 Paralipomenon 15
16 And David spoke to the chiefs of the Levites, to appoint some of their brethren to be singers with musical instruments, to wit, on psalteries, and harps, and cymbals, that the joyful noise might resound on high.
2 Paralipomenon 5
13 So when they all sounded together, both with trumpets, and voice, and cymbals, and organs, and with divers kind of musical instruments, and lifted up their voice on high: the sound was heard afar off, so that when they began to praise the Lord, and to say: Give glory to the Lord for he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever: the house of God was filled with a cloud.
Judith 16
2 Begin ye to the Lord with timbrels, sing ye to the Lord with cymbals, tune unto him a new psalm, extol and call upon his name.
Psalms 150
5 Praise him on high sounding cymbals: praise him on cymbals of joy: let every spirit praise the Lord. Alleluia.
Psalms 32
2 Give praise to the Lord on the harp; sing to him with the psaltery, the instrument of ten strings.
A few of many passages regarding music. Somehow I do not see a gregorian chant in these…
Drums are darn near crucial for tight ensemble playing, particularly when musicians are spread out and have speakers pointed in different directions. Thinking of them this way they are a means to an end.Drums, in their role of enforcing a beat, go precisely against this fundamental requirement. The music becomes the focus, the skeleton, the regulating principle, and the text is then bolted onto the skeleton as best it can be fit, which always requires mucking around with the text.
Speakers? Perish the thought! The very thought of being “miked” is anathema to me. We have a twenty-five voice cathedral choir and we are a very tight vocal ensemble because we a) listen very closely to each other, b) have absolutely no need for drums or speakers because we listen closely to each other and c) we practice, practice, practice - three hours a week of practice.Drums are darn near crucial for tight ensemble playing, particularly when musicians are spread out and have speakers pointed in different directions. In my years of playing with ensembles incorporating drums, my only complaint is that the song selection during communion, and the ways the songs are played, can be quite aggressive.
Is it the opinion of everyone who brings up the psalms as an excuse for drums et. al. that the Church for 2000 years never noticed them? The late Pope mentions Psalm 150, where we are commanded to praise the Lord in his sanctuary, with tambourines and cymbals and dancing and all that.
You are blessed with a talented and well-disciplined group as well as a decent acoustic. Not all of us are so lucky. The acoustics in our parish church are abysmal. The room is deader than a doornail and “eats” sound, partly because of the way that it was designed, but also because it is carpeted throughout. We have no choir loft, so the choir is located in the left front corner of the church. Those who stand farthest from the piano have trouble hearing it, and they are at relatively close range. Fortunately we have a decent sound system, but a room such as ours would be impossible to deal with minus the microphones. The only good thing is that the screams of the fussy babies don’t carry very well, either!Speakers? Perish the thought! The very thought of being “miked” is anathema to me. That’s going a bit far… One does not “need” drums for tight ensembles. Drums are merely a different instrument in an ensemble A good drummer cannot fix bad ensemble playing… There are many excellent ensembles that do not use drums and there are no problems with the tightness of the ensemble.Drums are darn near crucial for tight ensemble playing,
