I don’t think it’s just a coincidence that the nightclub is a gay nightclub. The gunman probably targeted it for that reason.
Perhaps because under Islam homosexuality is a capital offense .But the reality is we have 20 dead Americans and that’s what we should focus on

In your hands, O Lord,
we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters.
In this life you embraced them with your tender love;
deliver them now from every evil
and bid them eternal rest.

The old order has passed away:
welcome them into paradise,
where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain,
but fullness of peace and joy
with your Son and the Holy Spirit
forever and ever.
R/. Amen.

Sigh. How quickly this becomes a “blame bush and advocate gun control” thread.

What’s worse: saying that, or a thread about whether picking your nose is a mortal sin?

It’s actually 50 killed and an act of hate and terror like this could just as easily have been committed by a non-Muslim domestic terrorist in our country. We have no evidence yet that the gunman’s action had anything to do with Islam.

Eternal rest grant unto them, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

The man was Islamic and it has been reported the man had radical leanings. How true I don’t think enough info is released of yet and they should be careful with info. But I think everyone needs to be open minded about a very possible reality of this.

No one has mentioned Bush except me. But I do not plead guilty since my reply was directed against a blame-Obama comment.

This is sad news.

Orlando has had a bloody weekend. Saturday morning the singer from the Voice and her killer died. Then this morning, this shooting.

God have mercy on those who died and their families.
Amen.

Mary.

Ultimately no difference at all. But I also think just as ethnicity, race, or religion would be a matter of concern, a hate crime targeted at a particular group due to their sexual orientation should be acknowledged.
In a culture obsessed with identity politics that is probably true

It only took 47 post for the “everybody does it” defense to begin .

I am sure Obama will soon tell us the lessons to be learned from this tragedy:
  1. We need stricter gun control
  2. We need to heighten awareness about bullying gays and the rampant homophobia in this country
  3. We need to increase Muslim immigration so lonely Muslims like this lone gunman don’t feel so lonely
  4. We need to close Gitmo so as not to continually stoke the righteous anger of the Muslims we so greviously offend

I do wish to reiterate that President Obama has fundamentally assisted in bringing about the current state of death and destruction. IMO he should have been impeached for aiding the enemy of the United States.
nice job trying to soften your ultimate intent; turning a horrific event into a political rant.🤷

Other than that press conference that just finished up, of course. Many analysts are stating that FBI spokesmen wouldn’t even bring up a possible Islamist connection if they didn’t have good cause to say that. The gunman’s father is discussing his being offended by seeing 2 men kissing, but last I checked mainstream Islam was not exactly known for being tolerant about such acts.

I personally have no issue stating that this was most likely BOTH (1) an Islamist terrorist attack AND (2) an attack targeting those believed to be homosexual. Because I don’t have this compulsion to defend anyone seen as “opposing the homosexual agenda” that some people do around here (such as those who are in love with Vlad Putin because of his anti-homosexual policies and think that automatically makes him a “good guy” who has justifiable reasons for everything else he does.)

On the other hand, I’ve also never embraced the tendency to embrace everyone who isn’t a heterosexual Christian middle-class white male as fellow victims of oppression, and conveniently neglect that many minority racial, ethnic, and religious groups are FAR from united in harmony in the US. Homosexuality is also much more taboo in Black culture than White culture. And, some of the most transphobic comments I’ve ever heard people make, have come from Black people.

Of course, I’m sure you’d prefer that the shooter was a “domestic terrorist” motivated by right-wing Christian fundamentalism, it wouldn’t challenge this oversimplistic worldview of “heterosexual Christian middle-class white males are the source of all evil in the world, they are more culpable for bigoted behavior then anyone not in that demographic” at all.

On the other hand, I have noticed a tendency for some conservative Christians to essentially use “but we’re not as bad as those Islamists” to justify their attitudes toward homosexuals, or women, or rape apology. Indeed, I’m surprised no one in the Brock Turner topic has stated so far that “at least he got SOME jail time and the victim wasn’t jailed herself, and we don’t require four male witnesses to prove rape like those Muslims, it only took two male witnesses!”

Seeing every issue or event as having to somehow justify one’s own political allegiances, makes for a lot of sophistry around here. 🤷

The shooter’s father is saying he had anti-gay leanings so who knows at this point what the motivations were. Could be both radical Islam and anti-gay. Mixed motivations are not out of the realm of possibility.

God bless those Floridians who are lined up to give blood. What a turnout!
