MODERATOR REMINDER

Charitably discuss the event, don’t attack each other

They are now saying that 50 are dead and that this is the worst mass shooting in United States history.

Wow bad weekend for Orlando.
It’s concerning to see even 15 years after 911 that we still cannot face the reality that there is a group of people who wish to kill.

Some comments on the media about terrorism jump the shark from charitable to down right ignorant.

There is a war on the west.

The real tragedy is that the targets in the nightclub may be engaging in soul damaging behavior. There is no repentance after death. Let’s all take this as a reminder to go to confession. We have to account for our lives at any moment.

Firstly, I would like to offer a prayer for everyone involved, even the gunman:

O God, please have mercy on the souls of all the departed here today and grant peace and comfort to their families. Amen.

Now, I would hope that we can all have a civilized discussion on this thread as we discuss the horrendous event that has plagued us in the United States this day. There is absolutely no need for rhetoric or personal opinion, because although everyone is entitled to their own opinion and interpretation, with situations such as these, only the facts matter.
  1. 50 Americans were killed and 53 were wounded in a “gay bar” in Orlando, Florida.
  2. The attacker was an American citizen named Omar Mateen who is a Muslim.
  3. The attack is either one of Islamic terrorism (lone wolf or organizational, but either way all rooted in the same ideology) or simply hate towards homosexuals that would lead to mass murder of them (although, since he was a Muslim, it all goes back to Sharia Law).
This is not a question of gun control…in the United States, we have the right to bear arms in the Second Amendment. This can obviously be interpreted in many ways and should, of course, have regulations and background checks to protect our safety, but not one of us is a constitutional lawyer and we should, therefore, not try to make our own interpretations. But, regardless, bad people are going to get the weapons they want/need for their evil actions, and nothing will ever stop them. Even if you have the right permits, you can get an AR-15 assault rifle, as it is the civilian model of the military M16.

The real problem lies here: President Obama and his cronies are so wrapped up in PC and their left-wing agenda that they are failing to see the issue of radical Islamic jihadism in the Middle East and around the world. Terrorism should not be left to his own devices as it clearly has been for years, and this horrendous event should open the eyes of the American people to the lack of concern on the part of our leaders today for keeping us safe.

The bottom line is that the attack is one of hate: whether it be hate against America or those with same-sex attraction. And the hate that this man felt, whether he did it as an ISIS sympathizer or simply out of his own hatred, obviously has to do with the fact that he, as a Muslim, follows Sharia Law, which prescribes death for homosexuals.

In fact, a couple months ago, a Muslim scholar named Farrokh Sekaleshfar went to speak at an Islamic Center in Sanford, a suburb just north of Orlando, where today’s attack just occurred. This man has said that, for homosexuality, “Death is the sentence. We know. There’s nothing to be embarrassed but this,” and then that it is an act of compassion to kill them. I just found this video of him saying this, and I’d bet a lot of money that Omar Mateen heard his words and was possibly inspired by them. You can find it here:

May God bless you all!

Something has to be done in regards to guns. Theirs no need for someone to carry a big assault gun in the city. Camping different story.

People will get offended and scream oh 2nd amendment but a stop has to be put.
Im sorry to say that gun laws will not accomplish that, the only people that obey new laws are law abiding citizens, criminals and terrorists generally do not care about laws, so…this is something that must be fought at the source.

The shooter’s father is saying he had anti-gay leanings so who knows at this point what the motivations were. Could be both radical Islam and anti-gay. Mixed motivations are not out of the realm of possibility.
I agree, but I’d also point out that “radical Islam” IS “anti-gay”. Much of non-radical Islam, too.

ETA: I’m not claiming that being “anti-gay” is the equivalent of a major plank in the Islamist platform. But certainly, I can totally understand how recent developments regarding SSM, and the general social acceptance of homosexual relationships as totally equivalent to heterosexual ones, would provide ammunition for Islamists to prove to their recruits how evil modern Western civilization is. (I’ve heard some forms of homosexuality are considered acceptable in some Islamic countries, but such relationships are still not considered equal to heterosexual marriages.)

Stict gun laws will decrease the amount of mass shootings. If it’s not easy to get guns=lesser people will have access to guns=less shootings.

If you look at countries with different gun laws as USA, you would find that the rates of gun violence are significantly lower. Murder will obviously not be wiped out, but it won’t be extremely common. There are waaaaaayyy too many shootings in the US in 2016. There’s obviously something wrong when people with the intention to kill can easily access guns. It’s not a matter of whether people will obey laws or not, it’s about making it difficult to get your hands on one

Orlando shooter was known to FBI as suspected ISIS sympathizer though no indication plotting to carry out attack - official to CNN
This is not very reassuring, what do they expect, people that are planning attacks, to come out and announce it!

I also have to wonder if they had no idea this guy was planning such a large attack, whose to say they are not seeing the next 9-11 in planning too!

My sincerest condolences to the surviving victims, to the friends and family of the dead, to the owners of the club, to the local community, and to the entire queer and Latino communities. I am holding you in my heart, friends. I am incandescently angry with you, and I grieve with you. I see you. I take up space in solidarity with you, on this day and every day.

I also stand in solidarity with the people who are Muslim who will targeted and harmed in retribution for this act, too. And with my fellow humans who have mental illness, who will demonized during the coming search for explanations, because “mentally ill” is the explanation that gets used so that we don’t have to talk about toxic religion and easy access to guns.

Could you cite some facts to back up your statements? Simply consider Chicago, with its very restrictive gun laws that has a very high murder rate with guns.

Looking at another country, Switzerland, with a very high gun ownership, has low incidents of murder.

Stricter gun laws only mean law abiding citizens won’t have guns. Criminals, who by definition won’t care about what ever law you want to pass, will still have guns.

👍 well said.

He wasn’t just a citizen with access to guns. He was a licensed security guard who was licensed to carry a gun. There is no indication he was in any way mentally ill.

“This is clearly an act of terror,” FL Gov Scott says of Orlando mass shooting: cbsn.ws/21vPMY2

I didn’t even know this had happened until I read it here! what a terrible tragedy!
praying for the souls of the departed and praying for the injured and for all families involved.

We already have strict gun laws. Most of these guns are stolen or obtained illegally. You have cited no facts to back this up your claim which comes straight from the liberal play book.
