Mateen entered the club at approximately 2:00 am. It was a humid night and temperatures that day had been in the 90’s . At 2:00 am, the temp would have been in the mid 70’s. The patrons would have been dressed for the weather (lightly clad) as would have been (I assume) Mateen. If so, how did he enter the club with an AR15 rifle, a Glock 9mm handgun, and numerous magazines for re-load unseen? What was his point of entry? I read somewhere early on that there may have been an altercation at the main entrance to the club between Mateen and the club’s security/doorman, but the press doesn’t seem to be talking about this anymore. Who was the doorman? Does he have a name? Why no interviews? The Press found his father and his EX-wife within hours of the tragedy and conducted interviews but they couldn’t find the doorman? Was the main entrance even Mateen’s point of entry – or did he come in unseen from somewhere else? Also, the place was packed. Parking would have been problematic. Where did they find his car? I read that he had another weapon in the trunk of the car – did he think he could access it at some point? Would he need it later if he escaped? Did he plan on escaping.
As for the armament used, The AR 15 holds 30 rounds; the Glock’s magazine capacity is variable – from about 18 rounds to as much as 30 depending on the shooter’s preference (I’m pretty sure that an 18 round magazine is standard). He may have used the Glock, but all the Press ever talks about is the AR 15. (The “AR” in AR 15, by the way, stands for “ArmaLite” the original manufacturer of the weapon – not “Assault Rifle”). If the AR 15 was the weapon used in the massacre, it would mean that Mateen would have had to reload a bare minimum of four times to kill 49 and wound 52 – and that’s if every round hit its target. I suspect that he wasted shells by missing his target and so had to re-load more often. The AR 15 (as well as the Glock) are set so that you find your target, pull the trigger, and the gun shoots – target, trigger, shoot; target, trigger, shoot; target, trigger, shoot – he had to pull that trigger more than 100 times. The AR 15 he carried was not an “automatic” weapon. And, as far as the term “assault” weapon is concerned – all rifles are “assault” weapons if you use them in an assault – as are machetes, knifes, broken bottles and sticks.
