I plan on trying to fast for 40 days. Jesus fasted for 40 days, and then the devil confronted him.
St. Michael’s Lent, a period of penance observed by St. Francis of Assisi, also runs 40 days, from Feast of the Assumption on Aug 15 to Feast of St. Michael on Sept. 29.

I will be fasting in reparative communion with the whole Church, while at the same time talking frankly about the abuse of power perpetrated by many entrenched clerics, and advocating for radical change that leads to open servant leadership.
both/and

I voted no also. While I greatly admire the ability to fast in others, the practice has never done anything for me that I felt I was missing by not doing it.

I don’t really know how to fast. I try to fast on Saturday in honor and for the Blessed Virgin Mary, but I have trouble with it and I don’t know what else to do during the rest of the week.

40 days with water and vitamins but no food is about the limit of what a healthy adult is capable of. Those who are overweight can go longer. In the extreme case, one morbidly obese man got himself down to a health weight by not eating for a little over a year. Regardless, extended fasting should only be done under a doctor’s supervision, so that you resume eating before your weight gets dangerously low, and to make sure you maintain healthy blood chemistry. Tragically, several people survived the Holocaust only to eat themselves to death when Allied soldiers let them gorge on their rations, not understanding the importance of mineral balance when resuming adequate nutrition after a period of starvation.

Dude. You are in no position to suggest how long a person fasts. That is between them and God.

I made a suggestion in order that they may show humility towards Our Lord. Certain saints followed this practice during lent so as not to match or exceed Christ’s fasting.

You are not qualified on the subject of humility. Again, what the saints did was their personal choice. I am sure others have also fasted for 40 days in solidarity with CHRIST.

You preach humility yet are strident about a suggestion that made no claim of authority. I hope you feel better 🙂

we must not recommend a fasting plan.

we must say, consult your medical professionals before embarking on any plan.

this is very dangerous

I am saying that person 1 cannot suggest to person 2 how to be humble. Unless there is cause to do so. And 40 days fasting is pretty humble!!

I mean yes we can if we do so lovingly and are not saying you absolutely must do it a certain way. I don’t understand why you are offended?

I am not offended. I am saying your suggestion came off as a bit passive aggressive.

Plus one.

I get weary of feeling browbeaten about issues I neither caused, nor contributed to, nor have any ability to fix.

That is what struck me as so odd about this, coming from this great challenger of rigidity, JPII body theology, morality, judgement, yada yada yada - after years of vitriol on this stuff, the laity now do the penance for sexual scandal and perversity that has been committed by and covered up in the hierarchy of the Church.

Christ died for mankind’s sins. It was not simply an umbrella in that He sacrificed Himself for any possible sin that could be committed but rather that He sacrificed Himself specifically for every sin which had been, is, and would be committed. We are called to unite ourselves to the Cross, to the Paschal Mystery. To deny that the sum total of the guilt of humanity does not impact our individual acts of penance is to spit upon the totality of Christ’s sacrifice. Our Lord pours out His sacrificial love equally upon the world, so too must we in our acts of penance.
