If a Pope’s condemnation of capitalism seems foreign, it’s because you’ve not been paying attention. Popes have been condemning both capitalism and communism for a long time.
Capitalism, as an economic system, has not been condemned.

Socialism/communism has been condemned by the Church.

And when did the exploitative capitalism end in the US? Did i miss a memo?
America is a nation of laws, with a well developed civil society, and a political system in which politicians find it beneficial to reach out to different classes of people. The media is robust in advocating for consumers, and there are laws in place to protect everybody from exploitation.
This is not to portray the system in America, Canada, Europe etc. as some kind of Eden or paradise. However, Havard was quite correct in noting that there are many places in the world where such protections do not exist, and the wealthy can make money without any consideration given to the poor.

Where do people come up with that stuff? Is it being taught in schools? In books?

Popes have not condemned capitalism as an economic system, and I don’t mean crony capitalism which is government/business corruption, as practiced, for example, in the Pope’s home country of Argentina. Or think Solyndra, or the arrangement between national unions and Democrat-controlled government in America.

On the other hand, the following is a bit of what Popes have, in fact, said about Socialism:
