I actually looked at your second link before posting my earlier statement…I was not sure if indeed the IRA were not involved in targeting civilians. I am not an expert on the IRA but if you dig a little deeper on that website you will see that the pub bombings were British police and or British military hangouts. It still doesnt make it right…but what I was trying to say is you cannot compare apples to apples Islamic terrorists and the IRA. The Islamic terrorist intentionally target civilians if they stuck to military targets they would be considered an insurgency only and might be able to defend some of there actions. The British state department has even withdrew its calling the IRA terrorists.

Al-Qaeda terrorism is not on the same par as the IRA, Prime Minister Tony Blair has suggested.
He said IRA political demands or their previous atrocities could not be directly compared to fundamentalists who carried out the 9/11 US attacks.

This was the point I was trying to make…

Also - the IRA did not kill in the name of Catholisism.

Hmmmm… so in the Catholic “just war” doctrine, the warring nations are supposed to just throw flowers at one another???
Your’e twisting my words. If you’ve followed what been said in this thread, the subject is doing violence for the sake of hatred, which is partially what Islam is.

I myself belief in ‘just war’ doctrine.

We know that, because of cathechesis.

Frankly I don’t know, I haven’t been taught in Islam. It probably varies from one Islamic sect to the other. When the Islamic leaders condemn the terror attacks, they quote bits of the Islam that require peace. Presumably they teach that those bits are more important than the violent bits, Presumably the extremists teach the opposite.

It comes down to teaching, you can’t deduce it just from the book alone (unless you do like some Protestants and take every word literally, which obviously leads to problems).

Not just catechesis. Just read the NT and you wouldn’t find any verse to indicate it. What you’d find is “love your enemy”, “love your neighbor as yourself”. I bet you wouldn’t find anything in the Koran comparable to that! The NT is just oozed with love of God and neighbor.

All I can say is the Bible is a stark contrast to the Koran. I don’t need a verse by verse. An overview is sufficient. If an overview can’t be given to prove that violence is not acceptable, it’s because there’s not enough text to prove it.

I’m not trying to twist words. Just wanting you to be more clear so as not to project a portrait of Catholicism that the Church herself does not profess.

All people are NOT children of God. Read the Gospel of John again. Those who are born again in baptism are the children of God by adoption. All people are creatures of God but only his elect are his children.

And there is no religion of peace. Christianity is just as much a religion of war as it is of peace and it should be. Christ said, “I come not to be bring peace, but the sword.” I’m sick of all this hippie **** that passes for theology.
How often we wish that God would make show himself stronger, that he would strike decisively, defeating evil and creating a better world. All ideologies of power justify themselves in exactly this way, they justify the destruction of whatever would stand in the way of progress and the liberation of humanity.
Pope Benedict XVI
Homily at inauguration as Pope, April 24, 2005

When they attack us we have a right and a Catholic duty to defend ourselves and if by doing so we kill a few of their ‘innocents’ that blood is on their hands not ours.
Really? As a Catholic it is my duty to disobey Jesus’ commandment to turn the other cheek? That is news to me.

Ed, you may not have noticed the dates, but the two posts to which you replied are both three years old. The two people who wrote those posts still read CAF from time to time, but they may not see this thread.

hhhmmm, maybe the Pope cracked open a koran and the hadiths and figured it out, or even by watching the behavior of muslims worldwide. None stop the jihadists and in fact support them and are only concerned with their image rather than stopping them.

Yep, the Pope is right - islam means submission and its adherents think that we should submit to it. Submit to a moon god. nope - it is not my cup of tea.

If you consider:

immorality vs. morality ==> war
wrong vs. right ==> war
lies vs. truth ==> war

you will never ever have a peaceful world…no matter what you believe in.
Yes but YOU can make it a peacful world. Not by being a crazed lunitic like those people who interupted mass, but start in your community.
