Pornography, why do men do this?

Both divorce and pornography are inherent wrong and sinful. The catechism is quite clear on this. The wife should not tolerate the pornography, or file for divorce. She shouldn’t have to live with a porn addict, or without a husband. Neither is an acceptable outcome.

Instead, she should work to bring her spouse back to purity, in mind and in spirit. Ultimately, it is his choice to do this, but she should enable this change, whenever possible.

I have recommended Every Man’s Battle in other posts. If you cannot afford a MHP, the OP could go down this route. It is less expensive, but much more effective.

Porn is an addiction though. You can never stop being an addict, you can find alternative ways to deal with an addiction and to stop it, but that’s about it.

In the end, if he’s still “lusting after the flesh” via addiction, but just constructs a way to avoid pornography, is he any better off?

Will not watching it make him pure, even if he still lusts after the flesh?

True, you never really “get over” addiction. However, some people become rehabilitated. They can avoid the source of their addiction, and go on to lead reasonably stable lives. Someone who graduates from AA, and is fully rehabilitated, will not drink again. (That doesn’t mean their lives are necessarily normal. They may have to put together shattered families, relationships, careers. It just means they are not drinking themselves into the ground, day after day.) And of course, even if someone is fully rehabilitated, there is always the chance of a relapse. Then the whole treatment and rehab cycle begins all over again.

People can, and do, become rehabilitated from porn addiction. It is like any other addiction; it can be overcome. Every Man’s Battle is one of many programs that can help people do this.

The biggest issue with porn IMHO is that many women feel exactly the way you described and personally I know of no man who looks at porn (or has in the past) because they think/believe their wife or girlfriend is not attractive or they wish they could have the porn star instead. I’m telling you that 99.9% of the time this is the case. There are probably some men who do look for that reason but I’ve never met one (and I know a lot of people from all different backgrounds).
I may be completely wrong in this, but I have talked to guys about this and it almost seems as if it is the action [or act] itself, not the particular woman, that causes the arousal. It may be one of those ‘primitive’ instincts sort of thing. I am not sure how or when it goes from being natural to being an addiction.

Most men, if they indeed see this as a sin, see it as a very personal one. For your boyfriend to open up about it is a step in the right direction. **Completely agree, in regards to any sin type! He seems to be sincerely doing his part to deal with it.
**

Again most importantly for you or anyone else who reads this and feels like a victim, don’t. Don’t let someone else’s, even your spouses, action dictate your self-esteem and self worth. When they fail help them deal with their demons but don’t let that effect you and the beautiful person God made you.

Joe
**Very well put, Joe. I think this is VERY important! Always keep in mind when in a relationship. I guess our culture has placed such emphasis on romance, that we color ‘becoming as one’ as a romantic image…it may not have been back in biblical times…maybe it was more of a commitment-social-clan type of thing to them. Who knows? Regardless, being in a relationship, even a very close one, does not mean that everything within ourselves stops being individual, such as self-esteem [which by definition must be individual], or character. Should someone’s character or personality change to mimic a spouse’s character and personality exactly? Surely not! Are they not “one” then? It is important to allow for God to work within a spouse on His own time, in His own way…He knows best! Even St. Paul had a ‘thorn’ that Jesus wouldn’t take away so that He would be glorified in Paul’s struggle and dependence. Looking at a potential mate in light of Jesus’ redemption, one must be able to cope with shortcomings as ‘God’s work in progress’…and as our personal cross. Surely each spouse has sins [or will acquire a sin inclination] that the other despises…naturally! The partnership should strengthen both to fight back!

This is actually the saddest post in the entire thread, I think. 😦
Our sexuality is a beautiful gift from God, not a chain! I hope you will see that one day…
It’s only a chain when satan gets ahold of it, but nothing satan can ever do is mightier than the sacrifice at Calvary. Please, please beg God to give you hope and bring you past the lust and addictions instead of attempting to destroy such a gift.

And I know not everyone is a fan of C West, but I honestly believe it’s because some people have either heard misrepresentations or are misunderstanding what he’s saying. Remember, he just faithfully repeats what the Holy Father gave us. He’s not some rogue theologian.

As for Alice von Hildbrant, I’ve listened to her. At least what I heard was very depressing to the point of sounding hopeless. When I listened to Alice, I felt like I was being yelled at for being a man. Talking about how all I was interested in was my “glorious orgasm” while the woman had all the pain. And that may be true in some men, but that’s all she was talking about. It’s like she was myopic on sin. She was just yelling about sin, sin, sin. Instead of proclaiming redemption, redepmtion, redemption as C. West does.

As I said before, I don’t need someone to yell at me for being a sinner. I already know that. I need to be reminded of Christ’s healing power and how I should be cooperating with it. Focusing on sin only separates us more from God. Satan wants us to focus on our sin and feel hopeless. We need to be conscious of our sin, for sure. But our focus and vision should be on the perfect and sinless image of Christ.

I’ll be praying for you, brother.
I have to agree with you on this one! Both, the poster you responded to and Hildebrand, sound like Dualists to me…which is a heresy our Church has been countering for centuries. Evil goes like a pendulum, from extreme to extreme…be all spirit, be all flesh…never stopping at the middle point, where our nature happens to be…humans: body/spirit, social, sexual, mystical…all bundled into one…a masterpiece of the Creator that Evil wants to take apart…whether it’s one part or another…
Regarding West, his points do get to me. I don’t think he is the Holy Father [infallible] but very insightful and helpful. We need to understand that we are not Puritans, never were meant to be, our religious tradition is very passionate…[large families] and loving.

Just as two wrongs don’t make a right, the baby doesn’t need to be thrown with the bath water!

Exactly!

Men seem to have this God-given imperative (if I can say that without people freaking) to populate the earth.

The polygamy is gone, monogamy is acknowledged as the standard, but it seems that the “urges” are still there, even when the man is united with a woman he loves who loves him.

Some men just wallow in it and are almost lost causes.

I think men are made to “work correctly” all in all with a certain level of testosterone, so without it we would not be whole, but it is a burden.
I’m not sure I follow this ‘males are ingrained to populate’ sort of idea…I think both males and females have to have the same urge or it wouldn’t work, right? From Genesis [which is quite old!] there was a man and a woman…each completing the other. [Even in cases where, like Abraham or Jacob, they had other women, have you ever noticed that it makes it clear that their wives gave them their maids, not that they took them themselves? Interesting, no? Until their wives gave the other women, they did not take them.]

Besides, males protected females & offspring…so, it took at least a few years until the offspring were mature enough for the males of the species to be able to have the time/energy/resources to keep thinking about just going about all over the place. It is not easy to have several women and their offspring! And, in those times, they would not have survived without their males’ protection.

Men also had the spiritual leadership of the species back then…have you ever noticed all the patriarchs? It was the men who directed worship, buried the dead, and tried to live fully human lives, as opposed to anything less than ‘fully human’.

If anything, frankly, I think females are more sexual than males, we are more ‘cyclical’ and in tune with nature and fertility [from the tides of the waves to the cycles of the moon, to the cycles of harvesting, keeping the hearth, etc…]

Would it be completely insane to maybe consider all of this fuzz with sexuality as a reconnecting with their humanity after a very intellectual [renaissance] period of history? Sometimes these things happen en-masse because of the progression of history.

Now, please do NOT think that I’m excusing the sins, which we all have to deal with, whether it is one type or another, we always will. Regardless of the reason, personal or collective, we all have to learn self-control…

I do agree with some male posters that maybe we should adopt a somewhat 'Middle Eastern" modesty…[and I’m NOT talking burqas here!] just moderation. Because it becomes progressive. Males look because it is almost impossible not to, and their females dress to attract because of competition with what they think their males will encounter, so as to get their attention before someone else does…and it just goes on, and on…

I think the analogy with alcoholism is unhelpful. A better analogy (at least for married men, or men called to marriage) is with food addiction. People can develop unhealthy compulsive relationships to food that need to be broken, but, at the end of the day, they still need to eat to survive. Men still need to have a sexual side. Even if they are celebate priests or religious, they still need to acknowledge their sexual identity and not run from it (Fr Benedict Groeschel has written some wonderful works on the sexuality of the celebate).

People can, and do, conquer food addiction, by cutting out what’s bad, and maybe cutting out a little of what’s good too, by learning to be comfortable with the feeling of hunger from time to time (it’s healthy and natural), and by thus rediscovering the joy of enough, instead of coveting the act of eating for its’ own sake.

I’m not seeking to justify male pornography, but there is also a female counterpart to it, which can be equally destructive, but is often seen as ‘innocent’. There is a lot of ‘female porn’ out there - not of the same type as male porn, not the images or videos, but stories, either fiction or ‘celebrity gossip’ designed to make women covet unrealistic relationships and unrealistic lifestyles. These speak to something compulsive in a woman’s sexual identity, and can also place an undue strain on relationships.

This is a struggle for all parties and probably the biggest wave of day to day moral challenge we face today.

It is so important for anyone struggling with this to talk to his (or her) [orthodox] priest. He will help enormously.

I have often considered the pain that the poor women endure in their mind who get sucked into this stuff, but I have never really considered how it makes a girl feel when her husband or boyfriend becomes ensnared in this sin.

In my view, girlfriends (wives) need to be supportive of genuine efforts of their boyfriends (husbands). It is very difficult as we are bombarded with overt sexual images daily (at the grocery store, on billboards for strip clubs to and from work, stupid Flash ads, etc.).

A man has to do his part to make the effort genuine. That includes getting web filters either for the browsers, a piece of software, or programming the router to refuse various domains (and giving the key to his wife or girlfriend).

Someone else wrote early in this thread that 99.9% of the time men do NOT look at pornography because their wives/girlfriends aren’t pretty enough. I personally believe it is the fact that sex is such a strong idea that supposedly offered with the same ease of checking email makes it hard to avoid.

But…that does NOT at ALL mean it is less than a mortal sin. As tough as it is sometimes, when we falter we know what we are doing it contrary to God’s law and gravely hurts Jesus Christ. Indeed we can’t let a setback send us back down the dark road. It is humiliating to tell your priest face to face of committing this trifecta of sin (pornography, MB, lust), but he is truly there to help you. And Confession is a powerful weapon against this false promise of satan.

Please don’t give up on your boyfriends/husbands if they are trying. Perhaps though a frank warning that such cannot be acceptable on the long run can help motivate them.

EDIT: I have found that devotion to the Virgin Mary is one of the best ways to get away from this sin. Make sure your significant other is practicing it.

Hate to say it, but I really think you need to find a new boyfriend.

I would give you the same counsel that I would give to my adult daughter: find someone else.

Don’t put yourself through this misery. Find someone who you can trust.

You don’t want to be going through this nightmare when you are married, now do you?
You know I have thought about it a lot. I have really gone through a hard past few weeks with this. The first time I caught him because someone was uploading it from his limewire and naturally I was quite hurt and confused. I never had this problem before with any former boyfriends, but then again I wouldn’t have known anyway. Anyway he promised he didn’t need it and it wasn’t a problem he would quit. He did quit for a few months but fell back into it and I saw it on his recently closed links list when we were searching for something on his computer together. This hurt me so much because it hit me that this could be an addiction. And that I could never marry someone who had this problem. After 9 months of dating marriage was something we both were starting to seriously consider and talk about. I am 24 years old and I never ran across this problem before. It was such a shock because he has treated me far better than any guy I have ever met. He treats me like gold. I was ready to break up and I know that I am strong enough to do it if I have to. But I am not ready to give up on him.

We come from different families. I have a very solid strong Catholic family and he does not. He has a stepfather who taught him that porn was okay, and a mom that was a very selfish alcoholic (his own words). He has seen a lot of selfishness and never wanted to be that way. And I believe that is true. He just never thought this would hurt or affect anyone else but himself. I don’t think he realized what a deal breaker this was until this last time because I distanced myself from him greatly. That was when I was feeling a lot of anxiety and having nightmares. I would go out with my friends and get upset at billboards and posters, I would get creeped out by the way guys acted around me or looked at me. It truly makes you hate the world when you realize how much porn has infiltrated society.

I have dated a lot and I think I am fairly insightful. I have met quite a few guys that will lie to my face because they want to make a great impression on me. I am at a grave disadvantage with guys when I am open and honest with them. If I want to know the truth about a lot of the guys I have to trick them into thinking it’s safe to tell me things or give them the impression I would agree. I think this would be a problem with most guys I meet nowadays.

It has been a few weeks and we have discussed this topic a lot now. I do believe he has stopped. He said if I want to I can put a program on his computers to filter or nanny his activity. But I don’t want to do that. If a man wants porn he will get it, whether his computer is blocked or compromised or not. There are ways around it. He has to do this because he loves me and he has to know he can do it without any assistance.

I get worried when I read about some women’s experiences online, but I have read some good experiences too. I am going to trust that God will lead me in the right direction here.

Thanks though.

Good luck!

I say have him join a forum like this one, or a non-religious one to talk about it. Make sure the people are pretty open though, don’t make it like it an anti-forum. People like to talk about these things, just usually not with their girlfriends/wives because they don’t want to hurt them, but don’t want to stop either.

Maybe you could suggest that instead of putting a program on his computer, he puts a picture of you, his girlfriend, on his desktop.

I do know from experience how hard it can be breaking free from this kind of thing. One of the meditations in St Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises is to see yourself caged and surrounded by all your sins. Imagining yourself surrounded by all those degraded women, the awful conditions they live in, their unloved souls, their drug habits, the men who abuse them, their abandoned or aborted children, the diseases they’ve picked up, the people you didn’t love because you were too busy looking at porn, etc. etc. can be quite an eye-opener.

There’s a lot of good discussion here, but nobody has really touched the answer to the title question: pure pleasure from viewing the images, addictive pleasure. Pleasure that even clouds men’s judgments, to not view pornography, even at work.

I thought I already covered that, ad nauseam:

Men who engage in this behavior are substituting pleasure (or temporary happiness) for joy. As such, they are fools. They are giving up the joys of heaven, for simple, temporary physical pleasures.

They are behaving like children, and should be treated as such. They deserve to be corrected - by their spouses, girlfriends, parents, whomever. So if you know someone who engages in this habit, tell them to stop, today.

Yes, this can be addictive, in the most extreme cases. But in most cases, it is simple, old-fashioned irresponsibility.

I’m just sorry that there are so many of us women that have had to go through this. It makes me really sad that our government legalizes this stuff. I had to break up with my ex-boyfriend because of how awful it made me feel and how he kept doing it.Esp. since I was so dedicated to him, I tried never to look at any other man, with or without his clothes on. It is really hard being a confident young women these days without your boyfriend looking at porn.

I agree with you and Joe. And yes, it’s between your spouse and God to overcome such addictions. But it’s alot easier said than done to “not let it affect you” when it involves feeling cheated on and lied to. If the sin was …say…missing Mass on Sunday. That most likely wouldn’t be taken personally. But when it’s watching the one you love lust after other woman (in the real world or in pictures) thats a different story. And a much more complicated one. It does affect the other person which then affects the whole relationship.

Good for you. Just listen to God. My husband and I came from different backgrounds also. But God works in mysterious ways. Our marriage is a miracle in my eyes. The key was that everything centered around prayer. I prayed and prayed and prayed and made sure God knew that all I wanted was His Will. The Holy Spirit spoke through lots of people while I was praying and discerning marriage with him. I gave it to God and then listened to my heart.

Anyone NOT JUST MEN can get that feeling. I know that for a fact. But what about your conscience? Maybe I have an overactive conscience I would feel guilty after that time was over. So how is it PURE ANYTHING but selfish ? Think about the way you want to be viewed by your daughter and how she would think of you if she saw or found out. No wonder people are so messed up nowadays. Where is the HONOR? I don’t know you may be single and not have anyone who cares. But especially if are in a relationship you really have to stop and think about how to direct your energy positively.

The world tells him this is normal.

He needs to surround himself with men who do NOT believe that everyone does this. Those who know it is a sinful, nasty habit.

To paraphrase the words of the Bible, if your computer causes you to sin, throw it out. It is better to enter heaven without broadband than to enter hell with the fun the internet provides.
Good catch, man. One thing I can add to this is that the world wants you to be natural, to surrender to your own desires because this world- especially here in the US- exploits a culture of immediate satisfaction. Unfortunatelly the devil supports this, for if one’s desires is opposite what the Lord wants, he or she will cast God aside and do it, henceforth mortal sin; 1 they know its wrong, 2 they commit the action, and 3 they fully intended it.

BTW porn and masturbation takes years to conquer. I started the fight Freshman year and I finally see it clinging to a lifeline now through only thoughts, and I’m almost into my senior year ( Kill the weed in it’s baby stage before it gets full grown) . I havent seen porn for the last 2 weeks, but the temptation is still there. I always have to remember that the Lord freed the Israelites from Egypt, but they wanted to go back since there was no food, so God supplied them with manna. When it comes to lustful Christian, adultury fornication, rape, porn, and masturbation is the food of enslavement, but God has the manna of love, to keep us on his path to the promised land.

Men and Women out there, if you know a boy just entering into middle school, tell him what pornography is, what it does to people, and other reasons why not to do it. Tell him before his “friends” in school encourage it. Its like a drug; people their own age telling them it is natural for men to do. Filters are also good. This current generation has exposed 60% 11 year olds to pornography. I believe if we start now, we can reduce that number.

For those still battling, become more holy. Go to confession more, recieve the Eucharist, pray a lot (making personal prayer, praying the rosary, asking the saints and your friends to pray for you, calling the Holy Spirit, meditating, meditating on the Bible readings, observing adoration, and attending mass are many of the different forms of prayer (I suggest use an arsenal of these weapons)) , have an accountability partner, and read the Bible a lot for God’s love. Oh I forgot one thing: NEVER GIVE UP BECAUSE THE DEVIL WANTS YOU TO GIVE UP!!!

Accountability partners are the key to the Every Man’s Battle program. I think they are extremely important. You can go to this person, and share your successes (and failures.) You can do this, when you can’t go to friends or family, out of embarrassment.
