I’m perfectly good with the “immigrants and refugees welcome” sign — why did he take it down? — but as for everything else, I’m right on the page with him. May God bless him.Are these parishioners really from the same planet as me? I had to double-check that this wasn’t satire, because the part about singing a civil rights song to protest a black priest was just rich.
Because that’s NOT what it means. Of COURSE legitimate immigrants and refugees are welcome in the Catholic church. It’s been that way for 2000 years.
The purpose of that sign is not state the obvious. It was to provoke & push a political ideology and to imply that Catholics (and others) who do not support illegal immigration and do not support the “so called” refugees who cross the border illegally are bad people.
It’s polarizing and wrong.
More often than not, in my experience. But that is just my experience. It may be related to where I live. How often are we talking about? I realize it gets a lot of press, but even as bad as it is it’s statistically negligible.
And that’s exactly what the priest says happened. He did not want anyone to throw them in the trash.Considering that vestments that ought to be disposed of by burning wound up in a dumpster, it is entirely possible that the clean-up was done by a parishioner rather than the priest and that there was some miscommunication about what (for instance) it meant to “get rid of” something.
Ace Hardware IS implying that their employees are more helpful than the employees at that other hardware store. When you think to yourself “I need help with this” they want you to automatically think of Ace Hardware. That’s the whole point of the marketing campaign. It’s literally the reason why they spend millions of dollars on that marketing.Does this imply that other hardware stores are not helpful? I don’t think so. No, it just says Ace Hardware is helpful. No harm, no foul.

Pure speculation here…did previous bishops allow this parish to function as it did so it would draw sympathetic parishioners out of other parishes? In other words, let the “60s hippies” have their own personal parish?“On the one hand, this group of whacky liberals has been allowed to run, essentially, a rogue pirate ship under the banner of Catholicism for eons. It was unfathomable to many that it went on for so long. I don’t know how much of that was the sympathies of liberal forces within the diocese, or just a distaste for causing a scene like what you read about here.”
