Brothers and sisters in Christ, I am amazed at your faithfulness in prayer! It simply sustains me. Saturday, for the first time since my diagnosis, I could genuinely feel my mortality. Needless to say, it was the worst of about two weeks of “interesting” days. However, since consuming the Lord and benefitting from your continued prayers, I have rested well and feel much more well. I still have a lot to go through, but with your constant prayer support, and strength from above, I shall persevere. God bless you all!

Jim, May our merciful Lord continue His work in healing you physically and spiritually, as you continue to do His work in helping others to heal as well. I thank the Lord for all the blessings He has given you and your wonderful family and pray that He continues to strengthen, guide, and bless you and your family every day. AMEN

From today’s Liturgy of the Hours:

Prayers and Intercessions

Beloved brethren, Christ the Lord is the light that shines on all mankind. Let us beg him joyfully:
  • Come, Lord Jesus.
May the light of your presence dispel our shadows
and make us worthy to receive your gifts.
Save us, Lord our God,
so we can proclaim your holy name today.
Ignite our hearts so that they burn with thirst for you
and hurry eagerly to be joined with you.
You took on our weakness:
give help to the sick and those who are dying today.

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

God, you proclaimed your salvation to the very ends of the earth.
Grant, we ask you, that we may rejoice as we await his glorious birth.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Just prayed for your dad, you, the family, and the successful treatment of his cancer.

God Bless you,

Hilary

Jim,

I am new to Catholic Forums, and I just read through the whole thread. Your faith and positive outlook regarding your illness and suffering has boistered my own. I have some health issues that have caused much pain in my life (I am having surgery myself this Friday). I am sure that in comparison mine has not been as horrible as I thought. At one point, I started doubting the presence of God, in fact. When I am at my lowest, though, He sends a disciple along the way to tell me what I need to hear (and smack me up side the head if needed). The past few days have been tough with my illness, and I was headed into a sour mood, but reading this thread has invigorated me and has reminded me who I am and whose I am.

I will start praying for you daily. May the Lord provide you the strength that you need to overcome this illness. I pray the Great Physician will heal you.

God Bless you!

Chapter 35 from the excellent The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis:

Christ: My child, you are never secure in this life. As long as you live, you will need spiritual weapons. You are in the midst of enemies, who may attack from the right hand or the left. If you do not make use of the shield of patience on all occasions, it is certain you will be wounded before long.

Moreover, if you do not fix your heart on Me, with the sincere will to endure all things for my sake, you will be unable to stand up under the heat of battle and will fail to win the palm I reserve for my Saints.

Therefore, you must bear all courageously, using a strong hand against all that stands in your way. The person who overcomes is fed with the bread from heaven, but to the coward is left much misery.

If you seek rest in this life, how can you expect to deserve eternal rest? Do not look for rest here, but for much patience. True peace is found only in heaven, not in the human person nor in any creature, but in God alone.

You must be willing to suffer all things gladly for the love of God: labors, sorrows, temptations, afflictions; all anxieties, needs, infirmities, injuries, detraction, rebukes; all humiliations, confusions, corrections, and contempt.

Such things are aids to virtue and test those who are in the service of Christ, preparing them for a heavenly crown. For this short labor I will give an eternal reward, and for passing confusion, infinite glory.

Do you believe that spiritual consolations will be yours for the asking? It was not so with my Saints. They had many afflictions and various temptations, and great desolation as well. But they bore up patiently through it all, trusting in God and not themselves; for they considered the sufferings we presently endure are miniscule in comparison with the glory to be revealed in us (Rom 8:18).

Do you expect to to have here and now what others just managed to to obtain after many tears and great labors? Place your hope in the Lord: be strong and courageous in your heart and place your hope in the Lord (Ps 27:14). Do not despair, do not give up, but with perseverance offer both body and soul for the glory of God. Your reward will be abundant, and I will be with you in all your tribulations.

Jim,

I feel blessed just knowing you, even if it is through the interweb. I am facing not just this surgery on Friday, but possibly ones in the future. The particular surgery has, from what I’ve heard, a very painful rehab period. I can only hope that through the next few months or so that I can face my sufferings and burdens with just a percentage of the faith and grace you have.

I am praying for healing for you. May the Lord bless and keep you.

Ericka, thank you for your prayers and kind words. That chapter from the Imitation of Christ was written for sufferers, and you came to mind as I read your post. If you do not have the book, it is compact and quite affordable at Catholic book stores. It will serve you well as you recuperate post-op. It will serve you the rest of your life, no matter how long you live!

Bind your suffering to that of Jesus on the cross. Since no servant is greater than his Master, how can we hope to inherit eternal life without our own sufferings? When in pain, just imagine the pain of nails through your hands and feet, your tender ligaments supporting your entire weight as your life blood drains from you and passersby mock you! Just thank and praise God that His Son, our Lord Jesus, opened the gates of Heaven for all who struggle to walk the narrow path. Without struggle, there is no victory.

You remain in my prayers.

Jim, glad to know your update.
praying for you, your wife Elsa and your daugther and your family

Continuing to keep you in my prayers Jim and thank you for the update. I admire the courage and strength that you have during this whole ordeal and your continued faith in the Lord. I am also keeping your wonderful wife and family in my prayers too. May the Lord continue to be with you and enrich your lives. God Bless.

Jim,
Continuing in prayer for you and yours. You were all remembered in adoration early this morning.

Thank you so much for your prayers, and I am still praying for you. I will be getting The Imitation of Christ as soon as I can. Thank you for the suggestion!

God Bless you!

Ericka
