Priests and pastors on CAF

If I remember correctly, the forum rules specify that you may not identify yourself as a member of clergy. (I could be mistaken.) Fr. Dave and Don_Ruggero were exceptions. Deacon Jeff is also an exception.
What about the other way around? From time to time I’ve seen commenters here who describe themselves as priests, but who say things that have made me wonder whether they’re telling the truth.

That’s what I’m saying. Persons on the forum may not have usernames that imply they are clergy or make claims to be priests. It is a precaution for people who are not truthful.

Father Dave and Deacon Jeff and Don_Ruggero were excepted out of that. You can ask Deacon Jeff who I’m 99.9% sure is in fact a deacon. 🙂

As I mentioned upthread, they are vetted. When someone new claims Clergy, it is ok to PM the mods and say person x is claiming clergy. Have they been vetted?

The Moderators have already stated that members are not vetted. “Supposedly”, at one point clergy were. However, that’s no longer the case.

Thank you, Stephie. I didn’t know that. It’s what I’ll do if the occasion ever arises again.

There was an imposter, maybe 3 months sgo, claiming priesthood. The posts made me suspicious, so I flagged other and asked whether said poster was legit. I got a thank you and we’re checking response from the mods. In a few hours, the posts were gone.

I think they still vett. Remember, the guidelines explicitly state that we, the users, need inform the mods. I don’t think they actively police unless alerted.

Last November, there was a new member with “Fr” at the beginning of his username. I would rather not name him because technically he is still a member, so let’s call him FrWho. I suspected he was not a priest because he seemed to not know much about Catholicism. I asked him by PM whether he was a priest and got a strange answer at first:
@FrWho, Your username is likely to be understood as “Father Who” and so I was wondering if you are a Catholic priest.
Yes, RandomAlias I am a Catho!ic priest.
Please pardon my asking again, as I must because you did not write “Catholic” but rather “Catho!ic” (substituting an exclamation point for the letter l). Are you a Catholic priest?
Yes, RandomAlias I am a Catholic priest. The ! was a typo.
On most keyboards, it is all but impossible to type an exclamation point by mistake.

I shared my suspicion with the moderator. I don’t know what the moderator did – I got no reply – but about two days after the above PM exchange, FrWho stopped posting and hasn’t been heard from since.

I wonder if he could be a relative of Dr. Who. He’s probably from a different time line and technically was not allowed to be interjecting his replies into this forum disrupting things on CAF and causing general mass confusion here on Earth and many other planets which I’m not allowed to speak of here.

I wonder if being a priest or deacon is like being a mother. When the toddler is screaming, pulling your hair, and completely unreasonable, we love them anyway. We correct them, but we love them just the same. God Bless our clergy and help them to have patience with us!

We should pray for our shepherds. There seem to be fewer and fewer, so it feels like the Church is being starved from within.

Like I said, don’t hang out in those threads. Nobody is telling me to dress like this or that, or disbelieve V2 or whatever. Mob mentality is common here on Caf. Anyway, unsubscribing from this thread.

I would love to have a priest around. I have been a long time member on this Forum, my understanding was that we came incognito under usernames. Discussion should be on issue rather than on the person. Thus we had the ‘ask the apologetics’ section - where one gets answers from real-life experts there.

Disclosing your real-life profession maybe undermines the flow of discussion, as the person with authority on the subject would have precedent in the argument.

As for priests, respect flows both ways. I work with lots of priests, doing things together, the respect would be mutual, according to the roles we have. How is that carried on in an anonymous Forum can be difficult and therefore, selective. I think the general rule of the Forum is the best guideline in how to post - polite, respectful and discuss on the issue.

Perhaps the Forum had changed so much as compared to the last one, especially in term of moderation, (outlier posters might get banned) maybe it’s different situation now.

God bless.

its not a snarky comment.
its not about trads. in fact trads are not mentioned in that comnent.
its about the never ending modesty threads.

and quite frankly your bitter feminist comment is way over the top and uncharitable

I don’t see why eastern rite catholics should not want to be here. Is this what u mean? Why?
No, it’s that when we come, there is a tendency to lecture us on how to understand our own practice and theology–as seen through a latin lens. I’ve left more than once after a round of that.

The attitude when this happens is basically patting the little eastern cousins on the head, and explain why they’re wrong because of what Rome says (ignoring repeated papal teachings in the process).
