Protestants: Have you changed your mind on anything "Catholic" because of something said on these forums?

See, i find your contentions blashphemous. The Bible is NOT Christ, the Scriptures DO back that up (if you know how to properly read the Bible), so you believe what you wish, what you are told by those who wish to retain their power (namely, Protestant pastors who want your $)…
That’s offensive.

Sadly, some Protestant pastors (usually the "properity preacher types–televangelists) do make a profit and I condemn that wholeheartedly. However, the overwhelming majority are paid very poorly. They do what they do for the love of Christ, not for money.

The United States of America might not be a perfect country (what country is?) but it is the BEST out there!

Thank God for it, and for its precious gift of religious freedom!
And on that I am sure that we all can agree!! 👍 👍 👍

ChristianKnight,

I’m not going to try and make some kind of blanket statement about every Protestant forum. But I do believe that CAF compares favorably with Protestant forums in general.
It does.

Please let us know what it is. Thanks… 🙂
I would have to say no because I was a faithful practicing cradle Catholic when I left the church. I observed all holy days of obligation, went to confession at least once per month, went to mass usually at least twice per week and spent much time in adoration.

Back to question posed by the OP

I’m not sure if it’s because of this site, or the reading I have done over the past year, but I no longer believe in Sola Scriptura.

Have you tried:

  • christianforums.com/
  • praize.com
  • theologyweb.com
at all ? The temperature is lower than here (which is a nice change); maybe because none of them is trying to prove they are the only people in the right, & that everyone else is wrong or defective.
Christian Forums has a series of denominational sub-fora, including one for Catholics.
Hi Gottle,

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Now that I’ve taken a good (well, good but quick :o) look at them, I would say that they all seem to be great fora.

One thing I would like to point out is that I wouldn’t consider christianforums and theologyweb to be Protestant fora. Rather I’d call each of them a cooperative effort by Christians of various stripes.

Mr. Ex Nihilo on here convinced me that I do not believe in Sola Scriptura. My actual belief didn’t change just what I call it. Basically I was wrong about what Sola Scriptura actually is.

I learned other things I didn’t know, but that isn’t exactly the same as changing my mind.

So other than changing my mind about the name of a belief I held, Id say I haven’t changed my mind on anything.

I agree 100%.

I would even say that when deciding whether to get into a conversation with someone on the internet, the main question to ask isn’t “Is this person Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant?” but rather “Is this person reasonable and courtesy toward those he/she disagrees with?”
i don’t even bother answereing people who are rude and hostile… For one thing it tends to make me want to respond in kind… (I’m human…my only valid excuse… )… i choose not to lower myself…

i think everyone on the forums should just ignore any posts that are rude… You can usually tell if someone is rude/hostile before even reading very far because usually that kind of person just starts off being hostile… They can’t seem to resist…

i was wondering if you could give us more details… Like how long did you believe that… what religion you were raised in &/or influenced by the most… etc… Just curious…

I love when people are humble enough to admit that maybe they were wrong… I guess i appreciate it so much because i have run across SO mnay on these forums who just… remain obstinate in the face of irrefutable truth… and scripture that supports it, etc… Kinda scary, i think…

I think Protestants have found “new” ways to argue with Catholics rather than learn anything substantial from the forums. If they refuse to accept Catholic teachings then that’s their choice.

Matthew 8:28-34
Mark 6:11
I think it is very difficult to “dialogue” with anyone through the written word. Too many misunderstandings result in “arguments” because of the way some, perhaps unknowlingly, state their questions and beliefs. Catholics, as well as Protestants are guilty of becoming defensive where no offense is meant. If all of us would ask clarification of a question/statement with HUMILITY many bad feelings could be averted.

Too many so called Christian Catholics become evangelistic and defensive on non-Catholic forums. Is it any wonder we don’t make headway in understanding one another and ecumenism? It’s very rude to evangelize under the pretense of “helping” someone understand the Catholic faith.😉

i’m thankful we have more religious freedom than other countries… but we are not as free as we should be… I have been persecuted in terrible ways because i am Catholic… (denied access to education, etc…). Those who are on fire for the catholic faith & let others know about it… are persecuted terribly in this counttry…

Hi distracted. I don’t think khutcheson was admitting he was wrong. If I interpret his few words corrctly, I think he misunderstood Sola Scriptura, but has found a different name for it. Correct me if I am wrong khutcheson.

How were you denied access to education because you are Catholic. I have found that I have been denied nothing that I am aware of because of my Faith.

As far as being persecuted because one is militant about the Catholic Faith, perhaps militancy isn’t the answer, but humility and tolerance would be a better approach. Just as we Catholics believe with our hearts and souls that the Church we belong to is the only one, so others raised in their beliefs from childhood, or those who have searched, but perhaps not far enough, believe their faith to be just as Sacred as we do ours. Just as we become insulted by those who make snide remarks about the Catholic Faith, so do others feel insulted when we say “sorry dear, but your church isn’t the only one”. We can set examples, we can explain our beliefs when asked. We can ask others about their beliefs and hopefully dialogue will be created. I don’t believe Pope John Paul II dialogued with those of other faiths with only conversion in mind, but also with the hope that more understanding, love and peace would begin.🙂

We can set examples, we can explain our beliefs when asked. We can ask others about their beliefs and hopefully dialogue will be created. The Catholic Church is not alone in the shortage of clergy. Many Protestant denominations are also having a hard time finding clergymen, since it is much easier to have a lucrative career in secular society.

maybe you are virtually a closet Catholic… or maybe you don’t focus on the differences between the Catholic faith & Prot faith??

i would prefer not to go into details about the education thing… Long, weird story… I’m not having the best day…

God bless…
