Goldy:
Cindy,

Just a short comment about your post here. If Vatican II said we are “One Body in Christ”, what does that mean exactly? Does that mean that women should be allowed to partake in things in the Church that have been reserved for men? I just think this particular phrase is open for interpretation. This has been my problem with Vatican II and what it has accomplished. Christ said, “You’ll know a tree by the fruit it bears”. I happen to see a lot of “bad fruit” from Vatican II. And heck, I’m 31 years old and born 10 years after Vatican I!! I see so much confusion in controversy in our Church, and it really saddens me. So many people just “doing their thing” and not adhering to Church law. No wonder there are so many bad things out there!! Oh well, just keep praying I guess
🙂
Hi Goldy,
I agree with everything you are saying. I am not trying to claim I read in VII documents the church “segregating” women. My own interpretation is that the Church has “bowed down” to moderism and feminism because women of today simply would not stand for being treated unequal to men in the Church. Aren’t there women fighting for a women’s priesthood as well? I am aware that in the old Tradition, women had to always wear head coverings (which I wear) and that there could never be altar girls. Today, because of VII, all that has changed. So what is so offensive to this “Bones” person in what I said or to see women getting their feet washed? I am perfectly aware our Lord washed the feet of only His Apostles, and of course, believe this tradition should be revered - but Vatican II’s mission was to bring the Church into a new era, a modern era - right? I know that most Catholics completely disagree or are angry with what Vatican II has brought about; confusion - but in this one instance, if the Bishops think it perfectly fine to wash the feet of women, who are we to say they can’t or shouldn’t?

Don’t forget, I am a new Catholic and still learning. My own INTERPRETATION, from what I have learned so far in some documents, is that women are considered “not a separate gender,” but One Body (with men,) in Christ. That doesn’t mean that I believe women should become priests either if what I say is misconstrued again. But I also do not get offended when I see a woman getting her feet washed by a Bishop/Monsignor/priest. Since they are our spiritual fathers, who am I to object?

I do however, feel sad when I see altar girls. I wish some sort of guidelines should be put in place for girls regarding modesty.

You know, and I was just thinking. Our Lord came as a Servant to mankind, right?

Remember He said, (Mark 9:35) And he sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, “If any one would be first, he must be last of all and **servant of all.” **

Jesus doesn’t say “servant to only men”.

And (Galatians 5:13) “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one another.”

Jesus came and was a Servant to ALL of us, not just men - which is why, I believe, women are now included in the washing of feet.

But once again, this is only my opinion.

Can you guess what our Archbishop Gregory did
I know nothing about him…what did he do? What kind of Bishop do you perceive him to be?

Archbishop Gregory is a nice man so far…but too casual with some things like Holy Thusday foot washings…

Viri is latin for men and only men. That is why the washing of the feet of woman is FORBIDDEN and is at variance with Church law. And just because some dioceses do it, doesn’t make the practice legitimate. No legislative action has been taken allowing local variation in this.

First of all, FRIEND, I never said the documents say that! I said this in my own opinion! The Vatican II documents said we are “ONE BODY IN CHRIST”!!! You seem to be misconstruing what I was saying simply out of anger. Get a grip and read what I posted again. This is YOUR interpretation of my interpretation of what is happening within the Church.

Oh, and thank you for the very nasty PM. Real nice fellow Christian. I don’t even know you but I wish you well no matter what you think of me.
Were you attacking my initial post? It sure came off as sounding that way. I asked to you to point out where in Vat II it says that the Church treated women as unequal? You failed to do this. And it seems that you are avoiding my questions and not being truthful.

You have said you are a recent convert; welcome. I would certainly like to have a conversation with you about what drew you to the Church. I have been Catholic all my life. (which has been a certain number of years).😃 We need all the friends we can get these days.

When I was growing up in the 50s and early 60s, you could attend any Catholic Church in the nation, or the world, and be reasonably certain that what happened there was in unison with the pope. Unfortunately, these days, just because a priest or even a bishop sanctions something does not mean he is being obedient to what the pope and the Vatican are teaching.

For a wonderful explanation of the Church teaching about the difference in the sexes, I highly recommend Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Heaven but Never Dreamed of Asking by Peter Kreeft; in particular the chapter Is There Sex in Heaven? You can actually read that chapter online at peterkreeft.com/topics/sex-in-heaven.htm Dr. Kreeft apparently has realized how important this teaching is and has made it available to as many people as possible. At his website you will also find a number of lectures by Dr. Kreeft in mp3. He is my favorite philosopher, and I hope you find him as fascinating and as illuminating as I have. I have learned a lot from him.

As for the charge that the Church has denigrated women, remember that the Catholic Church alone among the Christian traditions has accorded the status of Mother of God to a woman. No man save Jesus is higher than she is in the estimation of the Church. Men and women have equal dignity, but have different positions.

God bless you,
Ruth

I respect everything you are saying, and I also welcome you to the Church (my wife is a Catholic “rookie” herself). She has a lot of questions and concerns about Church teaching. She agrees with most of it but feels like there’s a lot of nit-picky rules and regulations we have to adhere to. I look at it this way: We have laws and rules to protect people, right? Rules aren’t put in place to make people miserable or segregate one group from another. In the case of the feet-washing, I feel this should only be reserved for men because it has always been reserved for men (since the time of Christ, I believe). In my opinion, if this opens up to women, who’s to say the women’s rights activists won’t jump on this and say, “If we can get our feet washed, why can’t we be priests?”. It may be a far-fetched scenario, but it’s sort of like the whole idea of where do you draw the line in the sand? If it gets crossed, do you keep moving it back? Okay, I’ve rambled on enough.
By the way, I also agree with the idea of male alter servers as well. I truly wonder if the Church brought back the rule of male-only servers how much of an increase we would see in the vocations to the priesthood? I think there’s a direct correlation.
God bless!!

I agree there is a connection. Personnally, I think that people who think that women should have their feet washed is a push for a Protestantized Church and for women’s ordination.

Back on topic, please. It’s supposed to be about the Rainbow Sash movement, not whose feet get washed.

This is my first post.

Here is a pretty neat link about the foot washing.

In reference to the Rainbow Movement.

You all seem so versed in scripture and caught up in the Vatican rules and regulations while overlooking simple meaning of our Lord’s one and true command; “Love one another as I have loved you”.

What ever happened to love the sinner hate the sin?

You Christians should be ashamed of yourselves for posting such judgmental statements about anyone during the season Lent.

“Preach the Gospel always. Sometimes using words”?

This is the time to stop pointing out the faults of others and turn inward and repent against our own abominations. It is only then that change will take place. You know? Practice what you preach; “get the board out of your own eye”.

You saints also have sin. Your stain of sin is no different then theirs (the homosexuals and feminists). You bunch of authoritarians. Where is your humility? You are not only attacking them but each other as well. Jesus would have healed them not called them names or gossiped about their wrong doings. He who had no wrong would not have been on a CATHOLIC forum stirring up trouble. Who are you?

Pray for these poor souls who blindly face eternal damnation because they are tempted beyond the means grace given to them. They are HIS lost sheep.

Think of what a horror your life would be if you were the Christian father, mother, sister or brother of a homosexual. This is a very sad situation for these folk.

Shame on you! This is a sin! Go to confession! Why don’t you give up this forum for lent?

Suggestion: Send an email to the Rainbow Sash Movement in charity and succinctly explain to them the theology of the body and why homosexual relations are against God’s plan. Do this sincerely and pray that they will come to know the truth.
…not a bad idea Riley…
Bones IV:
Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Um, anyway…

We can suggest to our parish priests that they mandate receiving Christ on the toungue only instead of on the hand during the Pentacost mass to prevent activists from abusing the Eucharist by passing it along to the defiant wearing rainbow sashes. I plan on making this suggestion this Sunday.

😃 There is nothing I love more than a judgmental post about being judgmental.

The truth hurts doesn’t it?

Mike,

“Toungue” should be spelled tongue.

“Let him among you without sin cast the first stone” -Jesus

My point is that you were throwing a stone at people because they threw stones. It has nothing to do with truth. It has more to do with irony.

Regarding the subject of the thread: 91.3% of the posts don’t contain hate or “judgment”, they contain correction. I don’t think it’s proper for people to use Mass to protest.

God bless,

Robert

Robert;

Thank you. You are right. I am wrong.

I seem to forget that sometimes an email can come off as sarcastic because there is no tone of voice to support the words.
