Diocese rejects oath request
BRIAN MARTINEZ ****
The Orange County Register
COSTA MESA – The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange on Thursday rejected a request that all parents sign an oath of faith and morality before enrolling their children in Catholic schools in the county.
A group of parents at St. John the Baptist Elementary School in Costa Mesa made the request, saying a gay couple with a child there is trying to promote at the campus acceptance of their lifestyle and adoption by same-sex parents.
**Superintendent of Catholic Schools Gerry Horan answered for Bishop Tod Brown in a letter to the group, saying church canon law and leaders say oaths are only for rare circumstances. The parents had also asked Brown to publicly endorse Pope John Paul II’s edicts denouncing homosexual acts, same-sex marriage and gay-couple adoption. **
**Horan dismissed that request, saying the pope approved of Brown’s appointment and that special-interest groups should not try to pressure Brown. **
The parents have vowed to appeal up to the Vatican if necessary
