Was the source of the documentary Obama?
I thought it was interviews with other people? I was unware that Obama is featured in the documentary.

Is Romney speaking detraction? It’s not other people talking about him.

Perhaps I still dont fully understand what detraction is, to be honest.
Perhaps not.

I got the context just right. A government does have the responsibility to ensure that the basic human needs of its citizens are being met. Basic civics, not to mention, morality.
Since seekerz doesn’t feel like answering the question, I’ll ask this of all Democrats:

Do you believe that all citizens should look to the government for their basic needs?

Don’t you think its odd that those Americans who are in the biggest uproar over Mitt Romney’s 47% who don’t pay taxes, forget to take into consideration that the biggest chunk of that 47% are multi-millionaire’s and billionaires who never pay a red cent?
You are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts!

This is the study that actually talked about the 47% who pay no Federal Income Taxes, you’ll be surprised who makes up the majority of those who don’t pay. The super-dooper-rooper-rich only make up 2% of the 47%…the lowest percent. :yup:

Is Obama interviewed in the documentary? If he is I would consider seeing it. 🙂
His voice is featured several times, reading his own book, but he is not interviewed. That said, the documentary is off-topic. I was asking about detraction in the case of the “secret video” being released.

So, you believe that all citizens should look to the government for their basic human needs?
That is NOT what I said***. Individual*** people should of course, strive for self-reliance while helping those who are less able (or unable) to become self-reliant. However, as a society (led by a government), we do have a collective DUTY to ensure that everyone’s basic needs are being attended to.

Romney’s comment seems to diminish that collective duty at the expense of the individual one. That’s the problem I see with it.

Im no Dem but I do believe that those who are vulnerable in our society, from the unborn to those who Christ called “the least of these”, should be protected by government.

It’s the very basic of Christian morality.

To protect the “least of these”…

Of course not - I’m just challenging you. In another thread you were very concerned about the sin of detraction. Isn’t the posting of a secretly taped video of a person a form of detraction? The source wasn’t a journalist. This circumstance is much more a case of detraction than a documentary, but you don’t seem to have a problem with it.

Is it not detraction?
Detraction? Romney in his own words? Telling the truth - according to several posters here. Can a person commit detraction against himself?

“As a society” is not the same as government, and it is not government’s primary role. I do like your use of the word “collective” though, as in collectivism. That matches pretty well to the Democratic Party’s philosophy of government.

My mom and her sisters – and a lot of others just like them – are part of the 47% Mitt was talking about behind closed doors. I’m going to go out a limb here and predict that they are not going to be favorably impressed.
Although that’s not what I took out of this statement, I have to add:

My 89 year old mom pays taxes. She owns a business that employs three people. She doesn’t take a salary. She pays taxes on money she is taking out of her IRA.

She is favorably impressed with this statement.

Romney videoed himself and posted it on a blog? Interesting.

That’s not what I asked.
Ok, you asked, to paraphrase, should “all citizens look to the government for their basic needs to be met”.

No, of course not. But many citizens are legitimately vulnerable for a variety of reasons. We should expect our government to look out for the unborn, the vulnerable, the “least of these”

It is basic Christian values and morality that a country that was founded on Judeo-Christian values and morality should up hold and fight for.

From the unborn, to the least of these.

No way Christ said “the least of these” should be protected by government.

Yes, it’s YOUR duty, not the government’s.

The government has the same DUTY as society, to ensure that all people’s basic needs are being attended to. That does not mean it has to personally provide all those needs, but it has to ensure that there is a way for people to meet them. For example, that is why government assists many charities in providing for the poor/vulnerable, in addition to having programs of its own: that is one of the DUTIES of government.

My use of the word collective corresponds to that of the Miram-Webster dictionary:
col·lec·tive/kəˈlektiv/
Adjective:
Done by people acting as a group: “a collective protest”.
Noun:
A cooperative enterprise.
Synonyms:
adjective. joint - common - corporate - aggregate
noun. cooperative
(emphasis mine)
