The part that got me was when he said that Obama voters think they’re entitled to everything, including food, housing, and health care. Are Americans–the (working) poor, elderly, disabled–not entitled to the basic necessities of life? To be fair, however, I’m sure he meant they are not entitled to government handouts. Still, it was a chilling comment. And is it really true that 47% of Americans don’t pay any income tax? How about other taxes?

Just about everybody pays sales taxes at the point of purchases and wrapped up in the sales price of the item, I heard this accounts for about 60% of the government’s tax revenue.

No, of course not. But many citizens are legitimately vulnerable for a variety of reasons. We should expect our government to look out for the unborn, the vulnerable, the “least of these”

It is basic Christian values and morality that a country that was founded on Judeo-Christian values and morality should up hold and fight for.

The Church does not require the government to take care of “the least of these,” however both parties, Romney included, believe in a social safety net. The issue is how big the net needs to be. The Democrat net is all-encompassing and drags our economy to the bottom of the ocean. The good news, is that we’ll all be together when we drown.

I suggest you do a search of all the saints of the Church who held positions of leadership/government. They (to the best of my knowledge) all acknowledge an individual AND a collective responsibility for the ‘least of these’.

That does not mean it has to personally provide all those needs, but it has to ensure that there is a way for people to meet them. This is something that Democrats and Republicans, Romney included, agree on. 🤷

Now, how we do it and how “basic needs” equates to nearly half the populace not paying income taxes is another question.

I don’t get how people (conservatives) who care so much about what they will leave to their grandchildren, seem to be less concerned with the people LIVING TODAY who worked and contributed all their lives so that those employed today could have something to build on. And to think that before the mid-terms we were scaring grandmas with stories of death panels?! 😦

As well as state and local taxes, property taxes, social security taxes, unemployment insurance taxes, etc. Even people who receive government assistance AND work part-time pay taxes.

The bottom 50% earned 12% of personal income and paid 3% of income tax total say IRS 2007. Richest 1% earned 22% of national personal income but paid 40% of all personal income taxes. Top 5% earners earned 37% and paid 61% income tax. The top 10% earned 48% and paid 71% of all income taxes so how do not pay a cent? The top 1% of earners are paying more income tax than the bottom 50% of earners

Great. Now tell us what the top 1% is earning as compared to the bottom 50%. It’s called INCOME tax for a reason: loopholes aside, you pay based on the amount you make.

My 89 year old mom pays taxes. She owns a business that employs three people. She doesn’t take a salary. She pays taxes on money she is taking out of her IRA.

She is favorably impressed with this statement.
