Only to those who chose to interpret that way. He was talking to contributors and saying that people who did not pay income taxes would not be his voters. What is wrong with that? It is true. Sometimes the truth hurts.
In this case, it is hurting the candidate.

Evidence? Only people I see hyping Romney’s comments are the mainstream media aka extension of the Obama campaign and democrats who would not vote for Romney any way

From what I saw of the video on news programs, there was nothing particularly remarkable about his comments.

His stats on the Federal income tax are true. About 47% pay no Federal income taxes.

Anywone who is working , of course, will pay Medicare and Social-Security Tax. (I don’t understand why those are referred to as “payroll” tax without acknowledging their purpose.) Recently the payroll tax was waived or reduced as a stimulus measure. But that just has the effect of making Social Security and Medicare’s financial problems even worse.

If the nation simply turns into an entitlement society, it cannot thrive.
Quite true but the assumption he made is that ALL of those individuals will vote democrat. Here in Canada I can point to plenty of people who are on assistance of one sort or another or who pay no income tax and guess what - they vote Conservative not Liberal or NDP. Romeny may have just shot himself in the foot.

His comments don’t need hyping. Actually, for people like me who frequent this forum, those views are pretty familiar. It goes something like this: people who don’t take care of themselves are dependent victims addicted to entitlements…My takeaway, if people can’t take care of their basic needs they should silently slink away and live on charity if, when and where they can access it; at any rate it is better to pine away of want than to commit the cardinal sin of accepting government assistance…

You’re right about that. I don’t think being on assistance or not paying Federal income taxes automatically makes one a Democrat! I suspect there are conservatives among them.

This is not Canada.

I have a hard time believing that people on welfare vote Republican in this country.

Obama won PA after saying voters in the state of cling to guns and religion so it would be a mistake to count Romney out

Romney did not dismiss the 47% as if he would not work for them and help them as president. He said those people are not going to be likely to be receptive to his message and he is correct, statistically you are far more likely to be democrat if you recieve help from goverment programs. He said the independents are who he is going after

You are missing the point - not paying income tax or being on some sort of assistance does not equal voting left or right regardless of what country you live in.

:👋:
Share of Recipients of each program that self-identified as supporters of Republican party in 2004-2007 Maxwell Poll:
Government Subsidized Housing 12%
Medicaid: 16%
Food Stamps: 20%
Unemployment Compensation: 21%
Welfare or public assistance: 22%
Disability benefits from government 25%
We see below in a two-party split 60-80% of welfare recipients are Democrats and full time Workers are evenly divided between parties:

Depends on what left or right means in your country. In our country left is big government, right is less government.

Except when it comes to getting into a war; right means more military spending (big government), more intervention overseas; where as left means less military spending and less interventionism. To be sure, not all rightists are for more military spending and not all leftists hate war. 🙂

But, Christine is substantially correct.

It’s the same here in terms of definitions and we DO have a welfare state and if the argument being made was correct Liberals and the NDP would be in power in perpetuity. The NDP have never formed government at a federal level and we currently have a Conservative government in power. Judging by the group will allways prove very problamatic. Using such an approach all Catholics should vote republican on the abortion issue alone yet the facts prove otherwise.

It is only hurting the candidate when the whole statement is not quoted. He went on to say that he wanted all people to do better, to be able to become tax payers. That is the crux of his message and always has been. It is the message of the GOP, that everyone who wants to work can find a job. I know that there are people on assistance who do not wish to be there. The Obama economy has destroyed jobs by the millions and will continue to do so if he continues in office. One can only agree that this is hurting Romney if they listen to the MSM, or hear what they want to hear.

Gimme a break…he spoke the truth. All the Dems feigning outrage, know this as well! I just love the way the media is all over this,so predictable, however,Obama ,once again gets a pass on his abysmal handling of the Embassy attacks,oh,wait,I forgot. It’s not his fault,it was some random video that practically no one saw…anything to distract from the continual missteps of the empty suit occupying the White House,:mad:
Yeah, the major nerworks are fawning over this strikingly unremarkable video, despite the hype.

meanwhile, you have Libya, popular sentiment, and common sense all lined up against the White House in the consulate story. Reports are saying we had three days notice. (iraq-war.ru/article/277943) If this was Bush, you don’t think the White house would be getting crushed by the press over this?

The Romney video will pass, and if this is their best attempt at a fall surprise for the election (ala, the revelation of Bush’s decades old DUI in October 2000), this isn’t nearly on the previous scales.

Both parties probably have 45-47% solidly. It is the 6-10% of confused voters who can;t make up their mind that they need to court.

In the end, how does Mitt Romney’s comments on anything explain the historically bad recovery we have been stuck in for four years? That is all on Obama.

I think the timing of the video is odd. I think this would of been made a much bigger impact if it had been released near to the election or during the debates. The video has been around for about a month. Why publicise it now? To get attention away from Obama’s foreign policy failure?

That is NOT what I said***. Individual*** people should of course, strive for self-reliance while helping those who are less able (or unable) to become self-reliant. However, as a society (led by a government), we do have a collective DUTY to ensure that everyone’s basic needs are being attended to.
👍👍👍

I agree. It is true that he has written off almost half the electorate…the reasons he gives are not convincing to me, but I’m pretty sure that percentage of voters have written him off too. That much ‘truth’ is rather obvious.
As though Obama hasn’t written off half the electorate? You act as though is your first election. They don’t need the support of 100%, they need the support of a simply majority. Romney knows there is a chunk that are essentially bought and paid for. Another example - African Americans ARE going to go 90% for Obama, regardless of Romney’s pitch. You don’t waste your energy on those unmovable groups. You decide as a campaign which votes you can sway, and use your limited time and resources there.

No whether you believe each person’s policies are good for everyone, that is a separate issue.

Given the decrease in avg. household income since 2008, and an increase in unemployment, it is virtually impossible to say that any majority is statistically doing better than in 08, but of course, it all depends on your barometer.
