34.8 million paid no income taxes in 1984. 151.7 million Americans paid no income tax in 2009. What has happened during that time?
For one thing a population increase of almost 70 million peeps. For another, the retirement of baby boomers. Throw in some outsourcing and the death of heavy manufacturing and there you go.
You are right in that elderly and students take up a proportion of those that do not pay federal income taxes. Romney’s math was off, he should of taken those people out of his statistic. I do not think when anybody criticises those who are not paying federal income taxes are thinking of those that who are not of working age, they are thinking of those who do not want to pay federal income taxes, who like being goverment dependent, and other people who want to pay tax and find work but can not
Mitt’s words on the tape:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.

This is more than a math error. This is someone who doesn’t appear to respect – or even recognize – the social contract made with millions of Americans who worked hard and paid lots of taxes over the course of their lives.

I think you’re mistaken to think this isn’t going to resonate with independents with moms just like mine.

I think the spin will be more, “Look at this rich, out of touch, insensitive Republican.” Plays better…

That is the meme that the Obama campaign has been pushing for months and I believe they have used clips of Romney saying things before in Obama ads. In swing states such as Virginia and Ohio they are in the margin of error with Romney so it is not working. Obama campaign has $100 million plus of negative ads and their super pac ads and has it had a big impact in changing the direction of the race for Obama? No

So far…and it depends on the poll…even the panel on Hannity seemed a little down in the mouth tonight…talking about Romney’s lack of enthusiasm.
Mr. Romney needs a slam-dunk in the debates, and I don’t think he can get it.

You are assuming a lot about Romney’s debate performance, he was better than Newt Gingrich in some of the republican debates and that is saying something. Obama’s speaks eloquently when he has teleprompter but he is going to be directly challenged on his policies in the debates and he is going to be on the defensive and he is not going to have a teleprompter and he is not going to be able to give elaborate speeches

Guess we’ll see,

John

Wait… let me get this straight… The Democrats are pointing their fingers at Romney while Pelosi is still at large? Am I hearing this correctly?
Don’t forget Joe “The Gaffe” Biden

Guess we’ll see,

John
It shall be interesting. Obama is a very good orator regardless, nevertheless without the teleprompter he does have a tendency to speak off the top his head with some pretty amazing statements as the past has revealed.

Romney hasn’t been all that great off-the-cuff either. But, you’re right, it will be interesting,

John

That video apparently has been around for nearly a month? So nobody cared much about it before a left wing blog circulated it? This is being hyped because it was filmed secretly

Did Obama’s comments about voters clinging to guns and religion stop him from becoming president?

If Romney had said I do not care about 47% or I will not work for them, that would be wrong. Romney was speaking about those with an entitlement mentality not being receptive to his message. Conservatives having been saying that for months. If anybody thinks Romney was talking about those too old to work, who can not find a job, have lost a job because of the Obama economy, common sense says that is not accurate

The hypocrisy of Mother Jones and their comments about Romney speaking to 1% donors. Ignoring Obama fundraisers with hollywood celebrities and $40000 each tickets

[D]efects in the Social Assistance State are the result of an inadequate understanding of the tasks proper to the State. Here again the principle of subsidiarity must be respected: a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to coordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good. By intervening directly and depriving society of its responsibility, the Social Assistance State leads to a loss of human energies and an inordinate increase of public agencies, which are dominated more by bureaucratic thinking than by concern for serving their clients, and which are accompanied by an enormous increase in spending

But it boosts enthusiasm…higher Democratic turnout is something Romney cannot afford.

John
Please, you honestly think after four years of Obama and Mitt being on the national scene since2007, suddenly the dems are going to be fired up in two months over a comment many people agree with? lol.

I notice no one disputes Romney’s numbers, just a lot of complaints about an unpleasent truth being put to words.

“My campaign is about helping people take more responsibility and becoming employed again, particularly those who don’t have work.”

Well, it’s tough to be unemployed if you do have work.

I can’t wait to tell my 84-year old mother and her irresponsible older sisters how much Mitt wants them to be employed again.
You got that out of what Romney said? What an imagination you have.

One of the amazing things about all of this is the fact that a lot of people who don’t pay income taxes think they do. I have heard people who get an EARNED INCOME CREDIT talk about their taxes and the “refund” they hope they’ll get. They have no idea they’re getting back more than they paid in.

What Romney was, in a way, talking about is the Alinsky formulation that Obama adhered to and still does. Make middle class people think they’re victims of “the rich” if you want to bring about socialist revolution, because there aren’t enough poor people in the U.S. to do it. Notice that Romney didn’t say they really are victims, but that they have been made to feel as if they are.

And speaking of victims, I’m wondering how many people are afraid of Bernanke/Obama’s “stock bubble”. I sure am, and I’m heading for the door vis a vis the market. I am absolutely thunderstruck to see that we’re doing this again.

Don’t you think its odd that those Americans who are in the biggest uproar over Mitt Romney’s 47% who don’t pay taxes, forget to take into consideration that the biggest chunk of that 47% are multi-millionaire’s and billionaires who never pay a red cent? When push comes to shove people and most certainly politicians are always quick to blame the poor and the homeless for the country economic woes.

I’m not an American so any opinion I give is just added void in a windstorm. Besides; I was never big up on any politician or leader. When it comes down to brass tax their all for the richest of the rich anyway.

This coming from a man who got a $77,000 tax break for a dancing horse…😉

I wonder if he’s counting any of his buddies in those numbers…you know, the ones that hide all their money in the Caymans?

He’s playing to a crowd, and he’s doing it very well. The question is, is that crowd still big enough to elect him. The “welfare queen” myth has worked for the GOP in the past, and it might work again. Or, it might just be preaching to the choir of people who already believe that everyone on welfare is driving Escalades to Publix where they buy steak and lobster with their food stamps and sit around all day watching their big screen TV’s.

Interesting how Romney pointed out a demographic fact; that fewer and fewer are supporting more and more, and instead of focusing on that ominous fact, liberals delight in inventing what they think he and the others who pay most of the taxes do with the rest of their money.

I keep trying to resist the conclusion that the left really loves seeing more and more of the population impoverished so more people will hate the more fortunate the way they do, but it gets harder and harder to do.

:confused::confused::confused:

The “biggest chunk” of the 47% who don’t pay taxes are multi-millionaires and billionaires?

How do you know they don’t pay taxes? Proof, please.

Well, you are correct that the “crowd” is shrinking. As he pointed out, 47% of the people don’t pay federal income taxes, and Democrats are trying to increase that number. The more people they place on the government dole, the more they increase their core constituency…

Whatever happened to that. A side issue but a significant one is who are these people that are always taking private videos and recordings of people (e.g. Michael Phelps, Prince Harry). They are the real scumbags.

There is a serious lack of class, tact and decorum in our culture. An offshoot (unintended consequence) of the overall relaxing of mores and ethics… which leads to an uncertain understanding of right and wrong.

If it’s for money then there you go another example of our obsession with celebrity wealth and fame. Welcome to your fifteen minutes…
“Lack of class, tact and decorum” hmm? Are you referring to the video-taker or to the video?
