As someone that spent a lot of time with my children going to work would be a relief  Looking after children is hard work a lot of the time & the parents have to pay for baby minders which swallows up a lot of their income.

The dignity of work ? what about the dignity of not separating a child from it’s mother for long hours ? I think it’s one of the reasons society has went down the plug-hole with both parents away from their children for long hours.

I know he’s on about people on welfare, but if one partner was paid a decent wage maybe one income would suffice, and if we didn’t live beyond our means.

I hope he includes the able bodied social security recipients as well. You can’t criticize young people for not working when there are plenty of able bodied old people on the dole.
Are you including people who are retired in this statement?

Then lets start with them having a “partner” that will work. We’ve had 11 foster children come through our home in the last 3 years. Not one came from a 2 parent family, not one came from a home that had a working parent/partner. All 11 suffered neglect at the hands of “caregivers” that lived off government support. One of the primary steps to getting their children back was to gt a J O B so they could support their family.

Yes, people who are able to work but choose to collect the dole instead. Since when does an able bodied person have the right to insist that I go to work so that they can sit on their rear end and collect part of my hard earned wages for doing nothing?

It’s not as easy as it sounds.

Many single moms would like to work, but the cost of day care, takes every cent they make working.

Most single moms work part time jobs, but also need some help with day-care so they can work.

School vacation time makes it even more difficult.

OH, and before you blame them for having kids and being single, many of their husbands abandoned them, and left them to fend for themselves.

I’m thankful that my wife was able to stay home and raise our kids for the first 12 years of their life, before she eventually went to work part time. We were blessed in that my income could make this possible.

However, we knew mother’s who could not do this, as their husbands were alcholics who paid nothing for child support.

So don’t be too quick to jump on Romney’s band wagon. He’s a man who is totally disconnected with such issues.

Jim

That if you work your entire life you can live off the fruits of your labor? That’s a bad example?

What is your idea of a good example?
If you want to live off your savings there is nothing wrong with that. But there is no reason to give government money to people for not working. Social security is not savings. So nobody is owed anything.

Sure you can. First of all, receiving Social Security income is not being “on the dole”. These older citizens paid into the system - almost always more than they will ever receive back.

Second, for many (not all) “welfare moms” the hardest hurdle is finding that first job - one that pays enough to feed the family and does not require the parent to give up the free healthcare they get while on welfare without a viable replacement. Older workers are not in the same situation.

Because the government says they can. That is what the whole New Deal and Great Society was about buying middle class votes with the huge government sow teat.

ssa.gov/oact/ProgData/fundFAQ.html

The Social Security Trust Funds are the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) and the Disability Insurance (DI) Trust Funds. These funds are accounts managed by the Department of the Treasury. They serve two purposes: (1) they provide an accounting mechanism for tracking all income to and disbursements from the trust funds, and (2) they hold the accumulated assets. These accumulated assets provide automatic spending authority to pay benefits. The Social Security Act limits trust fund expenditures to benefits and administrative costs.

Benefits to retired workers and their families, and to families of deceased workers, are paid from the OASI Trust Fund. Benefits to disabled workers and their families are paid from the DI Trust Fund. More than 98 percent of total disbursements in 2011 were for benefit payments.

A Board of Trustees oversees the financial operations of the trust funds. The Board reports annually to the Congress on the financial status of the trust funds.

Is the government lying to us?

What you say is all true.

However, there needs to be some sort of compromise. Simply allowing mothers to go one the dole for 18+ years to raise children isn’t conducive to all involved.

The Romney’s did not become financially sucessful by taking no strings attached welfare for decades. I think he is in touch with such issues.

So you are saying the example should be work hard and long so the government can take your wages and give them to others?

That’s inspiring.

If I paid into SS so others could retire, then when I reach retirement age, I better be given the same opportunity.

Heck, I’m age 60. I was laid off last year at age 59. Few companies hire people over 55 years of age.

So, I’m living off my retirement savings now, for I’m too young to qualify for retirement benefits.

However, come age 62, if I’m still not able to find work, I’ll have no choice but take early retirement.

I worked all of my life, never was unemployed until last year.

Now you’re telling me I can’t receive SS retirement benefits?

The ‘dignity of work’ is something Barack Obama and Joe Biden touted in the 2008 campaign, it has bipartisan support:

It was President Clinton and the Democrats who passed welfare reform to encourage mothers to transition from welfare to paid work.

You are being pretty optimistic if you think its only for 18 years.
