Shotgunning beers

It’s a tradition at the winery where I work that, whenever we work a wine festival, after setting up on the evening before the first day, we pick up a six-pack of PBR and everyone shotguns one and that’s the official kickoff to the festival.

I don’t drink beer and my husband doesn’t shotgun, but everyone else does one and then we go on with the festivities. We’re the only two Catholics in the group, so I would say that Catholics CAN shotgun beers, but we either don’t or we do it very badly.

If it’s not a holy day of abstinance it’s not a sin.
If you find it a common habit it could be.
Agreed. Although I generally prefer to relax and enjoy my beer.

However, I do enjoy an Irish Car Bomb on St. Patrick’s day.

Shotgunning a beer refers to the speed you drink the beer, not the quantity of beer. You could shotgun a single beer.

It’s just the kind of silly thing college students do at tailgates. It’s not the most mature thing on Earth, but I’m not sure it’s a sin per se.

I thought it referred to puncturing a hole in the lower edge of a can of beer…putting your mouth on the hole and then popping the top to shoot the beer down your throat. I’ve never done it and am unsure here…isn’t this shotgunning a beer? Just drinking a large quantity fast we called guzzling.

Anyone like Bud Select 55? 😉

I’ve never heard of this? Could you describe it! Thanks! ❤️
You take a glass of dark Irish Stout (such as Guiness) and drop a shot of Irish Creme liquor (the bomb) in the glass. It tastes very good because stouts are often heavy, creamy-tasting beers and the Irish creme goes well with it.

But if you let it sit, the creme will curdle in the beer. While you don’t necessarily need to shotgun it, it would be in one’s best interest to drink it rather quickly.

I am not a beer drinker but dh drinks it when he cuts the grass. Usually an IPA or Perone.

( sometimes the grass is crooked) lol.

Thanks! I think something similar is done here, too. Not sure what they call it nor what’s in the shot glass, though. ❤️

It’s the sin of gluttony, and unless someone can really hold their alcohol, it is the sin of drunkenness as well.
Dang, I bet you’re a hoot at parties…or would be, if the party-goers didn’t stare at each others’ ankles and WRITE NOTES to each other like the unshackled, lust-ridden animals they are. 😉

Yes, Catholics can shotgun beer. No, it’s not objectively a sin (nor, objectively, is drunkeness). Whether those things might be SUBJETIVE sins lies with the individual; for example, if you know that you’re likely to wreck other peoples’ stuff or get into fights when you’re drunk, or if the doc told you to lay off alcohol for your health and safety, then those things might be sinful for you.

I don’t like beer much, myself. I prefer to down shots of Jameson.

You’re forgetting that the 1980 Ordinary Synod under St John Paul II made exception only for monastic ales…commercial lagers are forbidden.

That one always slips my mind. Thanks for the reminder.

BTW, I believe my Orthodox cousin once told me that while wine is forbidden during fast periods, beer technically isn’t…is that your understanding? 😉
