Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

I applaud your sarcasm “tGette”!!👍

“Reformed” only wants the answer that he has predetermined, his mindset is already established and whatever answer we give him is not good enough.

As Catholics, we believe the entirety of the bible, and we do not limit God. We believe in him entirely.

If you would like to be saved, all you need to do is call upon the name of the Lord your God, ask for his forgiveness, be baptized (1 Pet. 3:21; cf. Acts 2:38, 22:16, Rom. 6:3–4, Col. 2:11–12), and live a holy life (Rom. 11:22; see also Heb. 10:26–29, 2 Pet. 2:20–21).

I am saved by grace through faith and works (Rom 2:5-6, James 2:14, Mt 16:27, 2 Cor. 5:10, Mt. 25:31-46).

Once we do these things, we can acknowledge what the bible says; I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:5–8), but I’m also being saved (1 Cor. 1:8, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and I have the hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9–10, 1 Cor. 3:12–15). Like the apostle Paul I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12), with hopeful confidence in the promises of Christ (Rom. 5:2, 2 Tim. 2:11–13).

I knew I would not get to bed…but this is my last message…God willing!

This is off-topic…slightly…but I want to ask this.
(Moderators please be lenient!)

Reformed:
This is a border-line sarcastic question and serious question.

Would you prefer it if our conversations were limited to strictly quotes from the Bible? Even if we were talking about farming, etc?

I do not ask this to be rude…

Honestly, it seems like if anyone tries to make a statement that is not verbatim from Scripture you simply discard it as null and void.

Please…again…do not take me the wrong way on this. I just slightly get this impression from you and am more curious now beyond mere speculation.

Or as he has already told us, to be able to run around telling everyone he posts to that the Catholics, just like the Mormons and JWs he has also visited with could not or would not answer his questions from the narrow confines of the scriptures he has specified, when in fact he refuses to deal with the whole context of the New Testament as we have all showed him several times. Mostly he just wants to ignore the scriptures that prove the errors of his beliefs and make himself feel like he’s doing a good thing. 🤷

If it weren’t for all the other folks who might read this stuff and see our refutations I’d class responding to his threads as a huge waste of time.

Acts 16:30

Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

I am asking this same question to all Roman Catholic Christians. What must I do to be saved? Please share your answer with me.
31 But they said: Believe in the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
  1. Thou shalt be saved is not Thou are saved.
  2. Believe in the Lord Jesus, the devils believe also.
  3. What does it mean to believe in the Lord Jesus?
  4. 21 Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.
  5. Merely saying you believe in the Lord Jesus will not get you into heaven, only those who do the will of the Father will enter.
You are trying to tell us that simply saying I believe in the Lord Jesus and doing nothing, not doing His will, is enough to save you. He tells you you can be in either state.
The one who just says.
And the one who does.

The latter is the one who shalt be saved.

So, are you admitting a lack of knowledge of Sacred Tradition?

EDIT: And you have still not answered my questions about the Roman Catholic Church and its connection (or lack thereof) to the ‘early Church’.
Ohh come on… probably all Roman Catholics do not know or understand all of Sacred Tradition. Just look at the conversations on this Forum Site. I read so many contradictory postings within members of the Roman Catholic Church…that I find the diversity insightful. Which version accounts for the true teaching of the Catholic Church? I’ll give you an example on an essential Catholic dogma. How many baptized Roman Catholics know or believe that the elements of bread and wine change to the actual flesh and blood of Jesus in the sacrament of the Eucharist? I listened to the Catholic radio station in Oregon, and the Priest who is teaching the Catholic Cathechism on the radio verified that many Roman Catholics are ignorant to what Rome believes.

Think about this. God is infinite… and the Bible is the Word of God. All of us just skim the surface in knowledge revealed in the Holy Scriptures in a lifetime. The contents are finite, but the depth of truth and knowledge is infinite.

Now look at the contents of Roman Catholic revelation. Sacred Tradtion in size is probably 1,000% larger than a Protestant source of revelation. So, why would I think Catholics would know the Bible and all of Sacred Tradition?

Now back to the thread topic: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved”?

What must you do to be saved? NOTHING.
That’s what you want to hear, isn’t it?
No, that’s not the biblical answer that is required for a profession of Faith. Please consider post 2 from a Christian in a RICA class. 👍

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. - Rom 10

Okay, what else is needed than saving faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ on your behalf? The demons believe (dead faith), but have not been granted saving faith. True saving faith is not a dead faith according to the Apostle James. Is a progessive personal obedience to the revealed will of God evidence of having received saving faith, or is your personal obdedience including good works the basis of your salvation?

St. Paul was writing and preaching to the Church - the Catholic Church. The Church St. Paul writes to has its doctrines and sacraments well established by Christ. It is one thing for St. Paul to tell everyone during mass to ‘believe’, because everyone will understand it to mean to believe and hold to all the doctrines, sacraments, and everything necessary they believe about the Church, mass, etc.
Its another thing to tell a non-Catholic to believe, as they may simply think its enough that they believe there was a man/God called JC.

The Apostle Paul was the greatest missionary ever. He was bringing the great good news (gospel) to the Gentiles who were dead in their sins and trespasses. Mr. Thing… you will continue to be misiformed in you don’t take the Catholic Challege that I posted above. Please…please read all 13 letters of Paul in context. Start with the book of Romans and read through all 13 letters in context. There is a reason why God gave us the Holy Scriptures.

  • He said: Masters, what must I do, that I may be saved?
 I am the door. By me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved (not, is saved)

 He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved

 Let us go on to things more perfect, . . . of the doctrine of baptisms, and imposition of hands

 Peter said to them: Do penance: and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins.

 Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved.

 This is my body . . . this is my blood, do this for a commemoration of me. For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.

 They therefore that received his word were baptized: And they were persevering in the doctrine of the apostles and in the communication of the breaking of bread and in prayers. ← The Mass.

But he that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved.
Who then can be saved?
But he that shall endure unto the end, he shall be saved.
Who then can be saved?
But he that shall persevere to the end, he shall be saved.

St. Paul did not think of himself as being already saved - it was more like something he entered into and must persevere in;

11 If by any means I may attain to the resurrection which is from the dead. 12 Not as though I had already attained, or were already perfect; but I follow after, if I may by any means apprehend, wherein I am also apprehended by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended. But one thing I do: forgetting the things that are behind, and stretching forth myself to those that are before, 14 I press towards the mark, to the prize of the supernal vocation of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, be thus minded; and if in any thing you be otherwise minded, this also God will reveal to you.

Amen! I note with some interest, that the OP has quoted Paul several times, but not Christ even once. That tells us all we need to know about his aberrant theology.

Apart from Christ we can do nothing. I agree that the Christian life is one of struggling and pressing forward by the power of God in our lives. This is an amazing transformation process…to the praise and glory of God alone. We are commanded to be baptized and to obey. Progressive obdedience is great assurance of being in the Faith. This process of lifetime transformation is the work of God in salvation that is called sanctification. We are being made into the image of Christ to the glory of God alone. However, Paul makes a sharp distinction from the process of salvation (sanctification) and your legal standing before God (justification). Roman Catholicism trys to blend the doctrine of justification together with sanctification. All that have been justified at the intial conversion (born from above) will be sanctified (progressively made more like Christ). These two truths go hand and hand.

What is the basis of your legal standing before God? Are you justifed based on the person and work of Christ on your behalf? Or are you justified based on the work of Christ (+) your own personal works done in Christ? If it’s the work of Christ (+) your own personal works done in Christ…how much works do you need to do to make it to Heaven? Would you say salvation is 50% God and 50% of self? Can you boast in the flesh that you helped God to save you?

Romans 5

Peace with God Through Faith

5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we [1] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith [2] into this grace in which we stand, and we [3] rejoice [4] in hope of the glory of God. 3 More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. - Rom 5

I was on the fence about responding to the OP but I have to agree with the above statement. This is pretty much a waste of time.
The OP is looking for a “gotcha” reaction to the question. He/She claims no one is going to respond just because they won’t give the “correct answer”. According, of course, to the OP’s private interpretation of specific scriptures.
The OP wants to hide behind the loophole of being a “bible Christian” without any denominational affiliation. That way is free to come up with his/her own biblical interpretation. Pretty clever actually.

Catholics on this forum: Keep the faith, it’s grounded in biblical truth, founded by Christ and guaranteed to be guided by the Holy Spirit till the end of the world. Common sense.

Don’t believe the hype! 👍

I am asking this same question to all Roman Catholic Christians. What must I do to be saved? Please share your answer with me.

:harp:  :blushing: 😉

but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, - 1 Peter 3:15
Believe and live a life like a believer, both in words and in deeds. The minute you don’t or backsliding, it’s difficult to think you’ll be saved. Lip service alone and contradict it with your action, is not sufficient for you to be saved.

Please feel free to qoute from the four gospel accounts on this thread! 👍

Please don’t believe what I have to say. Just read through the New Testament in context.

As the Bible says, I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:5–8), but I’m also being saved (1 Cor. 1:8, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and I have the hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9–10, 1 Cor. 3:12–15). I believe Scripture teaches that perfect obedience to the will of God (sinless) is required for Heaven. In your Roman Catholic Faith, how obedient do you need to be in words and in deeds to enter Heaven? In another way to look at it, why should God allow you into His eternal presence in Heaven?
