Some Christians Still Denounce Harry Potter as Dangerous

After a long time spent on this thread, I will conclude my presence with this post.

I personally find it interesting that Fr. Euteneuer has stated that he feels the Church will face a greater need for exorcisms in the near future, while at nearly the same time the USA Bishops are calling for more exorcists to be placed on staff across the nation.

Make whatever you want of that, yet I do not think it is an accident. The Catholic faith is very weak in the world, and also in the USA, and HP is incredibly strong. Perhaps the sources I have sighted are not enough to prove any point (let the reader decide), yet there does seem as if there are plenty of weaker Catholics in the world today.

All I ask is that you give honest prayer and thought to this. Perhaps even bring it to the Lord in Adoration, or place it in the hands of our loving Mother Mary or both.

God Bless and thanks for the robust discussion. 🙂

You are still not getting what I am saying. I am saying that a small percentage does a great deal of harm and that most people argue HP is okay because it will do know harm, or very little harm. Very little harm when we are speaking of a billion people still becomes a very large number.

Take care. 🙂
Argument is not evidence. Where is the research that shows anyone has been harmed by HP?

And, we all thank you a second time for you second concluding post. 🙂

As noted in my PM, my reprint of your call to prayer was not sarcasm. I sincerely hope that you and others pray about this issue. There are plenty of strong Catholics who disagree with your views. We aren’t leading our kids to the occult. We take the view of Monseignor Fleetland, who read the books. I haven reason to believe he is a weak Catholic.

God bless.

Please discredit my last post. I meant instead of “perspective,” “presentation.” I’m afraid I just wasn’t thinking. :o
Alright, which one of you fanatics has cast a spell on me?? 😛

So to rephrase what I was trying to get across, the magical elements in both Narnia and LOTR are used in a Christian way, whereas in Rowling’s books, the magic is presented in an agnostic and pagan fashion. Tolkien and Lewis warn against the danger of magic many times throughout their novels. As a person who has read HP and seen a few of the movies, the distinction just cannot be made.

And as for those of you taking JK Rowling’s “Christian” faith into consideration while you read, please know that you are being deceived. For the sake of your Catholic faith, do not use that argument again.

Honestly, I never knew what her religious beliefs were.

But according to her wiki page, she’s made it obvious that religion has been something she has struggled with her whole life.

Something I go through every day. She was raised in a non religious family, I was raised in a religious family that was a long ways from Catholicism.

You’re leaving without providing one piece of evidence that shows anyone has been harmed by HP and those books and movies have been around for almost 10 years. All you’ve done is argue, mostly by authority, and argument is not evidence.

Regardless of what more he could say, he clearly wants to retire, so let’s give him a rest.

I make this point because none of the other HP opponents have cited any evidence either. And this is an important point, because argument is not evidence.

Deathly Hallows Part 2 comes out in the summer. I’m sure the discussion will begin again in May or June. 😃

I’m sure I’ll be lost to the Dark Side of the Force by then.
Now, that isn’t fair. Patrick, along with many other faithful Catholics (myself included) have voiced fairly and charitably their negative opinion of HP just as other faithful Catholics have voiced their opinions. On such a touchy topic…you’d think, well nevermind.

I’m glad you believe that both sides include faithful Catholics. I would not agree that the earlier comments in the thread describing those who don’t agree that HP leads to the occult as “weak Catholics” and Catholics who are not “serious about their faith” was fair or charitable.

What do you think, Robert? Do you think most Catholics who read HP are weak or faithful Catholics? I say weak for the young and impressionable who care more about their entertainment than learning about their faith - and who get caught up in the world too easily. I say faithful for the adults (most on here, I gather) who read purely for their own enjoyment and, I hope, would not recommend it to anyone not grounded in their faith. Now, I ask again, what do you think?

I have no idea, but I don’t recall that as the context for the use of those terms.

I think the Catholics on the thread are strong, serious, faithful Catholics. One poster implied that they won’t escape Hell because they are leading children to the occult. What do you think? Are those who don’t agree with you about Harry Potter destined for Hell? Are they weak in their faith?

I see lots of opinions, I don’t see any facts. This isn’t a personal attack on anyone, it is what it is, there are no facts to support the claim that HP is leading people down diabolical paths. Anyone, especially an expert who wants people to believe his claim, is supposed to base an opinion on facts.

This is what I have asked and no one can give an honest response. I would like to see actual, concrete evidence that Harry Potter is evil but I haven’t seen any evidence to back it up.

Don’t hold your breath.

I focus on the Catholic Faith, not the 40,000+ other Christian Denominations. That’s their business. (I don’t mean to be snarky)—there are Catholics who, when it comes to Faith and Morals, which are dictated in Our Faith-will not heed the warnings given by those in Authority in our Church. This is a handful (and I’m still learning).

God Bless you.
+Jesus, I Trust In You!
Love, Dawn
I take your point Dawn, and I applaud your loyalty to your Church. Well then, maybe it could read, “Not all Catholics are Christians.” That is a point that you yourself made in a previous post. However, I never meant for this conversation to be anything other than light hearted and tongue-in-cheek, so no need to grace these comments with a reply. I have to admit Dawn, that a sense of humour has been the cross I’ve had to bear all of my adult life. It has been a useful device on occassions 'though for defusing awkward situations. For instance, I was standing in the main control room of a Super Tanker (oil ship), and I was asked a question by a very officious person, "What would you do if all of the alarms went off? I thought about it for a moment, and then replied with a straight face, “I would keep pressing buttons until the noise stopped!” Fortunately, that person also had a sense of humour and he laughed, I laughed and we subsequently became good friends. As the old saying goes, “A smile begets a smile.” And, “Laugh and the World laughs with you. Cry, and you cry alone.” ( That guy must have been a Fundamentalst)

God Bless you Dawn!

Very true lil_flower_luv, and that statement should be extended to include “The Apocalypse”, far more frightening than anything in HP don’t you think? (Also a strong stomach would be an asset).

Ignore me, I’m just a simple Fundamentalist - passing through.

God Bless!

Good point, who can argue with that?
