At a private reception held at the White House with newly elected lawmakers shortly after the election, Bush asked Webb how his son, a Marine lance corporal serving in Iraq, was doing.
Webb responded that he really wanted to see his son brought back home, said a person who heard about the exchange from Webb.
“I didn’t ask you that, I asked how he’s doing,” Bush retorted, according to the source.
Webb confessed that he was so angered by this that he was tempted to slug the commander-in-chief, reported the source, but of course didn’t. It’s safe to say, however, that Bush and Webb won’t be taking any overseas trips together anytime soon.
In my opinion, if the president wants to declare war, his children (assuming there of age, of course) should be in the first group to ship off.

If you are in the military you volunteered. We do not have a draft. Webb’s son volunteered. If the president’s children volunteer then they should take their chances of being sent into combat just like everybody else, except if they did how would the secret service protect them?

I’m aware of that. But if Bush’s own flesh and blood were in immediate danger, then he might not be so quick to start un-winnable wars.

for what it’s worth…

by the way, congress declares war, not the president.

I wonder how your army “buddies” feel, knowing they might have to depend on you for anything.

I’m aware of that, but if your family and neighbors are in immediate danger, then you might not be so quick to cut and run.

Freedom comes at a price.

The new “leaders” want to see the citizens of Iraq stand on their own two feet, and learn to take care of themselves… all fine and good.

Now, if we can just convince them that they should also be saying the same of the citizens of America who often vote them into office to stay on the dole.

I don’t consider the people i work with my buddies. They are simply fellow soldiers. Outside of work i would probably not hang out with any of these people. I have very little in commin with most of the soldiers I’m here with.

However, that does not change the fact that i do my job and i do it well. And if the opportunity ever arose, i would do my best to protect them and see to it that they make it home safe.

Why is it that I firmly believe you?

My friends and family are in more danger now then they ever were back in 2001. We have created countless more enemy’s with this war. This war has hurt everyone and helped no one. Iraq would probably be better off with Saddam still in power.

Because I’m not one to put my pride ahead of my well-being. I needed to get an education, and this seemed like the best way to do it.
I see, and do you think you are better than those who enlisted for patriotic reasons or just thought the military life was for them? Many of my comrades used the military to get a better education but I believe most of us also felt a duty to country. Why do you think Webb’s son enlisted? He did not need to do it to get an education, that’s for sure.

Why was W. so snippy with him? Why not say something charming like “Yes, we would like to bring them all done just as soon as the mission is done.” Would have been a lot less peevish sounding.

Yes Webb did sound a bit peevish or maybe there is a better word to describe his attitude:whistle:

Does not sound like a good reason to decide to put your life on the line and defend those you hate so passionately.

But you have made a commitment. A very serious commitment. You need to swallow your pride, and do what needs to be done. I do not see much evidence of that in your posts.

Better? I never claimed to be better then anyone. I made a decision to go against my ideals in order to provide a more stable future for myself and my future family. No, i don’t think I’m better.
do they like you??
I haven’t given them any reason to not like me. I’m fairly quiet and i tend to keep to myself. But even if they didn’t like me, it matters not. I have my group of friends back home and I’m not looking for more.

What if your friends say “Thank you for serving”

If you are able to keep to yourself, it sounds like you are in a support unit, and not a combat unit. In combat for freedom, the only time you get to be by yourself is in a body bag.

I can assume that your friends are of like mind… have or will any of them enlist?

are any of them pastafarians?

out of curiosity… Regular Army?..three years?.. rank? time in Iraq? … time left in the Army?

And by the way… thank you for serving.

I was referring to “W.” or Bush if you prefer. He really did sound petty. Could have spoken a lot nicer. Had he been that short with me I’d’ve been tempted to strike him too, or at least spoken quite a bit more sharply to him in my next comment.

Of course, it probably gave Webb a popularity jump as less and less people actually like W. at this point.

Nydas, why is the source unamed? Once again, anyone can say anything they want to without proof. Just like Mr. Rumsfeld in another post.
