Can the daily Kos link be far behind?
Is this charitable?… Bush was being very “jerkish”… It’s time his ignorant war mongering “behind” was kicked to the curb… Bush is a coward, the xtian right (his masters) are cowards… all those xtian right looneys are back out in the cold where they belong.
The truth doesn’t have to be charitable. Is this charitable?
At a recent White House reception, President Bush asked Sen.-elect Jim Webb (D-VA), “How’s your boy?” referring to Webb’s son Jimmy, who is serving in Iraq. Webb answered, “I’d like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President,” to which Bush responded, “That’s not what I asked you.” Webb then replied, “That’s between me and my boy, Mr. President.”
The right wing has been attacking Webb for his reaction to Bush’s question. Last night, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly said Webb was “rude,” “inappropriate,” and “disrespectful,” because Bush was merely trying to extend a “nice gesture.” The National Review’s Corner called him “classless” and conservative columnist George Will labeled him “a boor.”
But according to Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), Bush was told that Webb’s son had a recent brush with death in Iraq and was warned to be “extra sensitive” when talking to the Sen.-elect. ThinkProgress yesterday spoke with Moran’s office and confirmed the congressman’s statement, first reported by hcc in VA:
Code:Not only did Bush know about it, he was specifically briefed on the incident before meeting with Webb, and was cautioned to be extra sensitive in speaking with Webb about his son.
After such a briefing, Bush perhaps shouldn’t have been so surprised about Webb’s unwillingness to chit-chat about his son.
So? How does it change anything? And given the briefing he was given with it not have been insensitive not to ask how his son was? From the looks of it, Webbs son has a recent brush with danger, and Bush was specifically briefed on this.

I understand the emotion that would lead someone to say silly things like the earlier post, but the suggestion is a bad one on many levels. If a close relative of the president were in in a military zone, they would be a prime target for kidnapping by the terrorists. This would, in effect, place the entire unit in greater danger. If the president’s relative were taken hostage, it would then put him (ad the country) in a dangerous scenario where personal feelings might influence national policies. So, can we put this silly argument to bed once and for all…If you are in the military you volunteered. We do not have a draft. Webb’s son volunteered. If the president’s children volunteer then they should take their chances of being sent into combat just like everybody else, except if they did how would the secret service protect them?
The argument is only put to bed when a Democrat is in office.I understand the emotion that would lead someone to say silly things like the earlier post, but the suggestion is a bad one on many levels. Bush knew Webbs son had recently had a close brush with death. So to respond with “thats not what i asked” when Webb said he wanted him home is incredibly insensitive. So? How does it change anything? And given the briefing he was given with it not have been insensitive not to ask how his son was?
There is no doubt that Bush had said nothing to Webb the Left would be screaming about his insensitivity for not checking on Webbs son having been briefed that he had been in harm’s way. I suspect that many of the people in Virginia who got suckered into voting for this rude and arrogant man are having buyer’s remorse. Not even in office yet and he is already using his son to try and score cheap political points, Has Webb no shame?
This is a boundary issue. Your brother has free will. He can make his own decisions and does not require your permission to make them.Honestly, if the President asked me “how’s your brother.” and (my brother may end up in the war) I might say the same thing. I want my brother home.
We seem to see a new imporved rationalization of Webbs Rude and arroogant behavior almost on a daily basis. its like everyday or so they come up with another reason why it was OK for him to be rude and hoping against hope that this time it will stick. In some ways I have to side with Webb on this issue. For those who don’t know Webb, Webb was a former Republican, and I believe even served under some Republican administrations.
Webb felt so strongly about the War in Iraq that he left the Republican party over the issue… This isn’t someone who is just against the war because its popular, this is someone whose deeply against the war. Also, Webb has served his country too and was even a wounded vetern, so he better than most people (and certainly better than the President) knows what it means to be in combat.
From the articles it appears that Webb personally avoided President Bush, and Bush was told to leave Webb alone… Webb’s response I want my son home, I think is a quite reasonable response considering that Webb disagrees with the war… All the President had to do was respond, we all do and leave it at that… It was very wrong for President Bush to seek someone out who was avoiding him.
How did Bush expect Webb to react frankly? He knows that Webb is against this war, Webb whole compaign was on getting out of the war… He also should know that Webb has always refused to answer any private questions about his son, only saying that’s between my son and me because Webb didn’t want one soldier to garner more attention than the others…
Webb clearly blames Bush for this war, and feels that because of Bush his son is in harms way, and yet he’s suppose to smile and say, yes My son’s doing just fine (in the middle of a war zone with no end in sight.) Honestly, if the President asked me “how’s your brother.” and (my brother may end up in the war) I might say the same thing. I want my brother home. For the President than to yell at Webb is ridiculous especially since it was quite clear that Webb specifically avoided the Pres.
