We have a basic point of convergence. I definitely agree that Catholics need to convert themselves first, and avoid criticizing the honest efforts of Protestants in their faith journey. For Catholics, how does one get them to read the Bible and the Catholic Catechism? For me, it was taking me out of my comfort zone by simple words that told me that I needed to correct some behavior if I were to receive the sacraments. In other words, the “or else” aspect of religion was needed. I think the first order of business is to challenge Catholics about receiving the Holy Eucharist unworthily from the Sunday pulpit. This needs to be reiterated and relevant examples cited to the current state of society’s values.
No, because everything just bogs down at that point. Too many Catholics just don’t even understand what Christianity IS. They think it’s bickering about whether they wear hats or not, or get to stand in line, or belong to this or that family, or like Irish music. They have got to learn what Christianity is.

OH, and above all, some of them think Christianity is politics. Many of them think this. Christianity is NOT politics.

Since we are talking about faith renewal, I guess we should reference the document that kicked off the effort of which the bishop’s special request - life, marriage & liberty prayer campaign - is just an element.

Porta Fidei

I’m pretty much done. I don’t have much more to add to the conversation other than that I am very glad that the bishops are promoting this prayer initiative. I hope that it gains traction in our local parishes and diocese.

I’m not sure about it. It seems to me that it’s too little, too late.

They’re desperate because nothing else is working.

Well, that’s how I learned about it 😃

The issue at hand, here, is that parishes better get it out to the faithful :yup:
Yes,considering, this is the first I have heard about it!

The problem here is that you pose a question, namely, “how does one get them to read the Bible and the Catholic Catechism?” But then you don’t actually answer it. You suggest a cure that doesn’t address the question. This is a problem with this logic. Are you aware of this on any level? It’s looks like you’re just throwing out random prescriptions to make yourself feel better.

I don’t think you can start with a challenge until you really get them to understand why the challenge should be met. For many, receiving the sacrament has no meaning other than it’s what you do when you go to Mass. There’s no connection to the saving activity of Christ and what that really means in their lives. There’s no fundamental understanding of WHY they should want to change their lives. This is another place where we could learn something from our Protestant brothers and sisters. The idea of “giving testimony” is something we need to steal. People who have found the “WHY” need to share their stories with others-which is hard to do. You have to go to some very personal places and talk about what Jesus saved you from and why your life is so much better. And we need to show people that life with Jesus is better than life without Him. I’ve talked to more than a few people who think Catholics are really unhappy and angry all the time because that is what they see. They see us protesting and expressing our dissatisfaction with the world around us often-but do they see our joy in Christ? There has to be something we show people about how we live that makes them want what we have.

I think there’s quite a lot of truth in what you say here, Seeker. Many Catholics often don’t talk much either so they don’t share these things face to face very often. That’s, after all, why we need CAF.

I do have one qualifier, and it may not be necessary, but I want to caution against the idea that the only change we have to make is to get giddy happy to show other people our “joy.” That’s wrong. I’ve seen that suggested. This is what clown masses are about.

The majority of Catholics need to actually learn basic Christianity. Figuring out how to get them to do it is the 64 dollar question. Joy in Christ comes from knowing Christ.

The bishop’s request for a prayer campaign for life, marriage, and religious liberty has as its root of the problem the very fact that Catholic teaching authority has not adequately argued its case against the sexual revolution. That is, the secular thinking that the sex drive is a powerful drive that may be unhealthy to suppress unnecessarily. Therefore, the Christian taboos of masturbation, contraception, cohabitation and homosexuality are considered antiquated & oppressive by many self-identified Christians. Many Christians accept the tenets of Christianity except where it enters their bedroom which is considered a private matter … a personal conscience matter. So I think that the sexual revolution is a disease in Christianity and especially Catholic circles that is largely not being addressed.

How does one get Catholics to understand why the sex behavioral disorder challenge should be met when they consider Catholic teaching to be disordered in sexual matters?

I agree with you completely on your warning. I’m not talking about giddiness-that’s not real joy. Real Joy is something deeper and richer than surface happiness. People who experience Real Joy have an aura about them-even when they are going through the worst possible life circumstances. Their faith in God gives them a confidence and a calmness in the face of whatever comes. Things like “Clown Masses” are fake joy-an attempt to show people joy when there is no Real Joy. It’s like forcing it or something-I can’t explain it very well, but I know it when I see it. I know when someone has that strong connection to God that brings Real Joy and when someone doesn’t and they’re trying to pretend they do. I think lots of people do and it’s why those things really don’t work.

I turned back to God because I had people in my life that showed that Real Joy, they had that aura about them. I had family members, friends and co-workers that displayed those traits for me every day. It didn’t happen overnight, but eventually I knew I had to have what they had and that was when I started taking steps to renew my Catholic education and understand it on an adult level.

For whatever reason, Catholics want to go right to changing sexual behavior and skip the necessary first step of introducing people to Jesus so that they understand WHY behavior should change.

There is no way in God’s earth that I would have changed my “bedroom behavior” without FIRST making a connection to Jesus. I had to understand God’s love for me FIRST, before I was ready to make life changes. Once I really got it, once I really saw who Jesus was and what He had done for me and what He still wants to do for me-then the desire to obey His will became stronger.

Get out of the bedroom-work on changing the HEART and the bedroom will take care of itself.

My brothers & sisters (large family) are all regular Sunday Mass attendees who raised their kids in the Catholic school system whose whole purpose is to connect kids with Jesus. So why after attending Catholic grade school & high school and attending Sunday Mass and receiving the Holy Eucharist during their formative years, is it that the first time that they are on their own and find someone they love, they contracept & cohabit and stop going to church? Apparently, the Catholic school system which has been teaching love without boundaries has failed in addressing “bedroom-work”?

There are two sides to the coin about our personal relationship with Jesus Christ that must be taught. … One is the WHY we should love Jesus and the other is HOW to love Jesus.

We learn WHY to love Jesus conceptually when we learn his story in the Bible, and factually when we witness the Saints around us whose Real Joy Love of Jesus is most evident.

We learn HOW to love Jesus by his own words that simply states “If you love Me, you will keep My Commandments.”.

Sex is one area where those who profess to love Jesus above all others, including self, family & friends, actually do so in a fundamental way. The basic rule of love of Jesus and the sex act is summarized in Matthew 5:27-31. This is where He states that offenses against adultery include all sexual impurity in thought and deed, citing masturbation with the “right hand” reference.

Contraceptive sex is in essence masturbation between partners.

What is important to realize is that the sin of masturbation between married partners designed to prevent procreation is not perceived as a sin against each other. Far from offending each other when the decision is mutual, the contraceptive act (assuming NOT health concern & NOT abortifacient) honors the relationship and favors the wishes of each other in a loving way. Both partners tell each other that they love each other more than Jesus Himself.

If a Catholic learns that contraceptive sex is masturbation between partners, and understands that they are literally telling Jesus that they love each other more than Him, they will understand HOW NOT to love Jesus.

The best venue to get this idea across is the Sunday pulpit with an exhortation to refrain from receiving the Holy Eucharist unworthily with the aforementioned explanation. Else, one is only adding insult to injury.

No, this is actually BACKWARDS. Chastity is a consequence of faith, not the other way around.

“22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”

Some people persist in their stubborn belief that the Church primarily exists to be the world’s “sex police” but this just isn’t the case. Is it important to behave in a Christian fashion when it comes to sex? YES. But that’s a consequence of actually being a Christian. There are a lot of Catholics who don’t really know what “being a Christian” means. Yes, yes, they go through all the motions and they get spoon fed on the rare occasions that they show up, but that doesn’t mean they’re actually doing something or choosing something, because a good part of the time, many are decidedly NOT.

ABSOLUTELY YES. Catholics have to come to the realization that being a genuine Christian is the answer to these problems. I happen to love the Church, and believe that to be a Catholic Christian is the best, but this doesn’t change the basic idea here, and it doesn’t change what Scripture says about it.

*"Life by the Spirit

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”** 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other."***

The best way to get this across to Catholics is to get them to have a conversion experience and come to be more Christian, some of them for the first time.

The problem here is that you pose an answer, namely, “get them to read the Bible and the Catholic Catechism” or “get them to have a conversion experience”. But then you don’t actually explain how. You suggest a solution that begs just another question. There is a problem with this logic. Are you aware of this on any level? It’s looks like you’re just throwing out random prescriptions to make yourself feel better. 😃

Nope, all over these boards I’ve been talking about the necessity to start programs at local parishes. There are several of these available:

Discovering Christ - Christlife christlife.org/resources/programs

The Great Adventure - Jeff Cavins biblestudyforcatholics.com/

Catholicism - Robert Barron - wordonfire.org/
