OK I found a speech (not the one I mentioned) but it will suffice…

catholic-forum.com/saints/pope0264qu.htm

"*I am thinking too of the great cultural influence of Syrian Islam, which under the Umayyad Caliphs reached the farthest shores of the Mediterranean. Today, in a world that is increasingly complex and interdependent, there is a need for a new spirit of dialogue and cooperation between Christians and Muslims. Together we acknowledge the one indivisible God, the Creator of all that exists. Together we must proclaim to the world that the name of the one God is “a name of peace and a summons to peace” (Novo millennio ineunte, 55)! * "

This is a shocking betrayal of the Catholic faith!

We work together with Muslims to proclaim the One God!!!

Its pure nonsense.

As I said elsewhere, “the devils advocate” is going to have a field day at his canonisation process.

John… a lot of Catholics think of JPII as a member of their own family… a closeness to the only Pope many have every known. That is certainly understandable.

I have a very difficult time dealing with mistakes my family makes - just as my parents certainly did. It’s a natural thing for those you love.

So, tread lightly when other posters have nothing but positive feelings for the late JPII. There is a reason for it. Personally, I think he was John Paul the Pretty-Darn-Good. But a rational discussion (without suspension or banning) is also a good thing. Lay out the facts, pro and con, make your opinion/decision, and discuss. And hope someone else will do the same.

And another…

ewtn.com/library/papaldoc/jp2arast.htm

“I greet the Islamic Leaders and faithful, who boast a long religious tradition in this region. My good wishes go also to all people of good will who are engaged in promoting the moral and spiritual values that are capable of guaranteeing a future of peace for everyone.”

More pan-religious nonsense.

What other religion is “capable of guaranteeing a future peace for everyone”?

This thread should have died awhile ago, it contiues to go wildly off topic. Perhaps we should take the discussion of JPII’s Ecumenical mission top another thread.

I always try to do that.

I also understand that my style is pretty direct. But then so was St Pauls.

The truth hurts.

John__19_59:
Nope - its totally in context if you want to understand the appeal of John Paul to the Britneys of this world.
In my opinion, you’re just setting yourself up to get banned, again. I, for one, think the topics in this thread are not in keeping with the original topic. Count me out until you start another thread.
