Still ripping on Covington Catholic

As I’ve already stated, I support Covington Catholic High School. I wear their school name, in addition to several others. Guess I better not wear those either, for someone might take offense because they went to public school. And better not wear my University of Dallas or Christendom College shirts–someone might think I value Newman Guide schools above other institutions, and get all triggered!

As far as “wearing your Sunday best,” shouldn’t people consider how wearing fancy clothing to Mass might make others feel-- those who can’t afford a new suit or a new dress? And what about jewelry? What about the kids I saw last week with pink and teal hair streaks? Aren’t those trends to attract attention? What about Nike shoes? Shouldn’t everyone dress exactly the same, so that there’s no possibility of others taking offense at any article of apparel at all?

I think there are people right here on CAF who harbor lingering resentment toward the CCHS boys, and it’s on account of the red hats.

I think it’s because the school is part of the issue discussed in the thread.

Given your point, there is nothing wrong with wearing clothes that support the school, but you will have to expect responses like those that are discussed in this thread.

What I would do is, for now, wear clothes supporting my own Catholic school or Catholic education in general, at least until this issue is forgotten by most.

“Sunday best” doesn’t necessarily mean luxurious attire but what is generally formal, dignified, respectable, and should not gain attention. The premise is that one dresses because attending Mass is the most important part of one’s activities.

I understand that in the past people used to dress more formally, and that they are more casual now, but one can also dress semi-formal given such circumstances. For example, for men there are collared shirts (long-sleeved ones if it is warm and shorter ones, if not polo, if it is too warm), slacks (or maybe regular-cut jeans if one cannot afford them), and leather shoes (just regular ones, and maybe soft leather with rubber soles if one has none). Of course, if there are important reasons not to do so (like a Mass attended by sports participants) then they are not followed.

FWIW, there are still dress codes for Catholic Mass in other countries, and not necessarily for TLM. In some cases, there are even dress codes for several Catholic secondary schools that do not have uniforms. I recall that the semi-formal attire for men mentioned above is also the dress code for a Catholic high school that I attended.

Aaaaand…the weather is almost right for short sleeves!
'Nuff said. 😎

Went to an afternoon Mass today. It was warm. Pretty casual, lots of t shirts. I wore this, which an usher and another man complimented. Guess I came to the right parish!

Then she launched into accusations against the students, basically stuff that was being said the first day or two after the incident. I reminded her that subsequent information showed otherwise.
That is the real harm from slander. Subsequent corrections never reverse all the impact caused by the original lie.

Honest question, are you just fishing for attention by wearing these Covington Catholic clothes? You keep saying it’s to support Catholic education, but why single out the one Catholic high school that has been in the national news? It seems that you realize it’s going to attract responses (favorable from some, and unfavorable from others).

I support the school, and their football team. I hope they win state. I’ll be watching as many of their games as I can this fall, on NFHS.
I support Catholic HS football teams in other states, too. So what?
Why are Catholics still refusing to admit that these Catholic boys did nothing wrong?

No where in any of his posts, does Joe_5859 suggest they did anything wrong.

I understand you wearing the shirts, I don’t have a problem with it. But it does seem odd that you keep reporting when you wear them, and people’s reactions. Because, on the one hand, you have a right to wear them. On the other, we don’t see you posting pics of shirts of all the other schools, just this one. So, that is why it seems like maybe you do wear them to attract some attention one way or the other.

Do I have to post them, to prove I have them and wear them?
As far as the last sentence in my previous post, that wasn’t directed to anyone in particular.

At best, you’re offering two separate reasons for wearing the shirts: 1) supporting a Catholic high school football team, and 2) expressing public support for Covington in opposition to any Catholics who disagree with you. No one cares about the former. As for the latter, it seems a strange goal for Mass. Parish festival? Bingo night? KofC meeting? Sure. Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? Perhaps not so much.

Judgmental much?
I wore my CovCath football shirt to work at a public school today, too. So what?

By that token, someone might claim you’re being judgmental against those who disagree with you re: Covington. Again, I honestly don’t care what you wear. But it seems that you’ve offered various reasons for dressing as you do at Mass, including a desire to testify on Covington’s behalf. Nothing wrong with that so long as one realizes that it encourages responses – good and bad.

I said nothing judgmental about the one lady who accosted me, unless ‘I politely said I disagreed and walked away’ is judgmental.
As far as those who are still saying those boys harrassed a Native American elder, that’s just wrong. That’s not judgmental–its a fact. Why they cling to the false narrative is beyond me. If they see my shirt and start wondering if maybe they’re wrong to condemn, that’s a side benefit. I’ve repeatedly said that I support Covington Catholic and their football team. It seems some others here find fault with that, and want to sharpen their claws on me. “I don’t care what you wear but–”

Whatever. Shrug 😁

Make no mistake though that the attack on the school children by the liberals in the Church was politically motivated. It was against children at a Pro Life event wearing attire that represents their Pro Life president.

I’m sure every year they have people out looking for an incident that can portray the huge number of marchers in a negative light. That’s the only situation where the march has been given more than a few seconds coverage.
