One can hope that, should this attempt to derail Kavanaugh fail, we might see the end of this particular tactic. There are only so many times this approach can be tried before even some of those opposed to the nominee become uncomfortable with just how scurrilous this process has become. I agree with this comment in the Wall Street Journal:This kind of nonsense needs to stop.
Letting an accusation that is this old, this unsubstantiated and this procedurally irregular defeat Mr. Kavanaugh would also mean weaponizing every sexual assault allegation no matter the evidence. It will tarnish the #MeToo cause with the smear of partisanship, and it will unleash even greater polarizing furies.
That’s the down side: if this works there really is no bottom at which these attacks will stop.
