My favourite is the saint whose feast day is my birthday – St Lawrence. His bravery as a martyr for the faith inspires me, but it is his words to his torturers that give me strength as well as my sense of humour. His accusers murdered him by roasting him on grill over a hot flame. In the face of death he looked at them and said “You can turn me over now, I’m done on this side” or some such.

It is not only a funny crack at those who sought to break him down, but also a another way of saying to God, just as our Lord did, “Father into your hands I commend my spirit”

God bless

Tony
I do remember hearing about this saint before. I think I’m going to find a link for some kind of saint of the day & post it here as well. This story reminds of a woman saint that I had heard of before. (can’t remember her name.) She was being put to death and she had a look of peace and a smile on her face, and had also already forgiven the people that sentenced her to death. It is said that the executioner was afraid of putting her to death. I can’t remember her name, or where I read the story, but I will find it and post it here.

Yes, that’s a keeper! 😃

‘Do good when you remember, and what you forget will be revealed to you; and do not surrender your mind to blind forget-fullness.’

St. Mark the Ascetic
I posted the link above before I saw this post. Well its just another link for saints. The more the merrier.

“In the midst of tears, she sheds no tears herself. She stood still, she prayed, she offered her neck. You could see fear in the eyes of the executioner, as if he were the one condemned. His right hand trembled, his face grew pale as he saw the girl’s peril, while she had no fear for herself.”

Saint Ambrose speaking about the death of Saint Agnes.

Praise be to God!

That is deeply inspiring.

‘More cheerfully did she go forth to her execution, than others go to their wedding.’

St. Augustine, of St. Agnes 😃

I just wanted to give a very heartfelt thank you to all who have responded and took part in this thread up to this point and to all who will in the future. I am extremely thankful for all of the stories, thoughts, quotes, etc that have come into fold here. I look forward to hearing many more truly inspiring stories, teachings and writings from these many truly great men and women that have been faithfully handed down to us, and who we share our faith teachings with. I just wanted everyone to know that this thread is reaching more than just people here on CAF as well. This thread has now also been linked to Facebook. I also hope and pray that this thread reaches other people who have been away from the Church, recent converts to our faith, etc. Thank you all for your contributions and please keep them coming!!! If you know of any quotes, teachings, writings, stories or other things that you would like to share with everyone, that you don’t already see posted here, please feel free to do so and know that it is greatly appreciated. God bless all of you.

“We must never lose sight of the fact that we are either Saints or outcasts, that we must love for Heaven or for Hell; there is no middle path in this.”

John Vianney

Wow :D.

👍 I love how the saints, even after hundreds or thousands of years have passed since their deaths, can still reach souls through their writings and bless them with deeper intimacy with God’s Kingdom!

“September 12, 1869. At 11:30 in the morning, the Lord granted me the grace of love for my enemies. I felt it in my heart.”

Anthony Mary Claret

I don’t know any quotes from Maximilian Kolbe, but I just wanted to share a short video/story about him that I found on youtube. This great man gave his life for a total stranger that was about to be put to death, while they were together in the Nazi concentration camps. It is said that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him holding two crowns in her hand, one white and one red. The white crown symbolized purity and the red one, martyrdom. He chose both. Maximilian Kolbe passed away on the exact day that the Church celebrates the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“If things go well, let’s rejoice, blessing God, who makes them prosper. And if they go wrong? Let’s rejoice, blessing God, who allows us to share the sweetness of his Cross.”

St. Josemaría Escrivá

I like this quote very much, thanks for posting it Lief. This quote reminds me of a story I heard about Pope John II. I heard that he accidentally slammed his hand in a car door so hard, that the door had to be opened again just so he could get his hand back out. He then turned around holding his injured hand smiling and said: “Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.” So many Saints have taught me that its real easy to praise God when all is well, but to praise God when all isn’t going so well, is really praising God.

I love that :D. Thanks so much for sharing that precious little story.

“No matter what obstacles we encounter, we must not allow them to turn us aside from the joy of that heavenly feast. Anyone who is determined to reach his destination is not deterred by the roughness of the road that leads to it. Nor must we allow the charm of success to seduce us, or we shall be like a foolish traveler who is so distracted by the pleasant meadows through which he is passing that he forgets where he is going.”

St. Gregory the Great, Pope

This last part of the quote is particularly powerful. Consolations, personal experiences with God, the saints or angels, or successes in our spiritual lives must never become distractions that draw us into pride. It is so well put, here.

Yes, when I read it (it was the second reading for the Fourth Sunday of Easter in the Office of Readings) I got the feeling that all my recent failures are just to keep me focused on the ultimate goal…of course a little success once in a while wouldn’t be all that bad.

Two from my newest favorite saint, St. Thomas the Apostle:

“So Thomas, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.’” (John 11:16)

“Thomas answered and said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (John 20:28)

“I began to understand that the love of the sacred heart without a spirit of sacrifice is but empty illusion.”

BL. Maria Droste ZU Vischering

“Don’t imagine that if you had a great deal of time you would spend more of it in prayer. Get rid of that idea! Again and again God gives more in a moment than in a long period of time, for his actions are not measured by time at all.”

Teresa Of Avila

I have plenty of favorite saints. Just to point out a few:
Pope Pius IX
Pope Leo XIII
Pope Pius X
Pope Pius XII
Pope John XXIII
(And yes I love the Holy Father)
Also St. Peter, and Paul
St. Thomas Aquinas-Who is my patron saint
St. Dominic Savio
St. Gregory the Great.
