What according to islam is the main goal of marriage?
I think , I explained already . Marriage is not for physical pleasure only.
God created partners for us . A believer must not marry a disbeliever . S/he should choose a pious partner so that they may encourage each other to do good deeds to please God Almighty . Their ultimate goal is to achieve salvation . They must pray to God to have pious children . So that they can raise them as believers .

In temporary marriage , all these are missing . Two persons just want to fulfill thier physical need . No duty / responsibilty for future life or hereafter.

We already pointed out that temporary marriage does not exist to scratch an itch, so to speak.
It does not absolve the partners of responsibility.

I fail to see how it is different from getting married for 3 months and getting a divorce.

So if this is the case, then why does God allow divorce?

As I stated, temporary marriage is the same as marriage and divorce in 3 months.

Except in the case of temporary marriage no one is misrepresenting their positions.

They are being completely truthful about their relationships.

So if this is the case, then why does God allow divorce?
Divorce is not encouraged , allowed if necessary . One must not marry with this intention that I will divorce my partner after 2 weeks or 3 months . S/he should try his/her best to make it succesful . Prophet (pbuh) said , among all lawful matters , Allah dislikes divorce most. Prophet (pbuh ) never married anyone for any specific period .
temporary marriage is the same as marriage and divorce in 3 months.
Divorce can take place on the first day under unavoidable circumstances . But prior intention to divorce the partner …how is that same ?

Really? A muslim man can have four wives. Then there’s what his right hand possesses, ie slaves. I’m surprised you fell for this play on words from muslim woman.

The fact is mohammed and his cronies organised sex relationships for men and made it “legal” by sanctioning it. The concept of marriage for Catholics and muslims are world’s apart.

The fact the many muslim men can only afford or get one wife, does not mean that islam respects the relationship and bond between one man/one woman for life.

Yes, I think that her view of marriage is better then the posters who are advocating temporary marriage.

Temporary marriage is not allowed in Islam, because the Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, forbade it, saying “O people! I allowed you the Mutah marriage with women before. ***Now*, Allah has prohibited it until the Day of Resurrection.** Therefore, anyone who has any women in Mutah, let him let them go, and do not take anything from what you have given them.”

Ali ibn Abi Talib also declared that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) forbade Mut’ah marriage.

Tafisr Ibn Kathir The verse was about temporary marriage, but that doesn’t negate the fact that temporary marriage was later forbidden entirely, forever.

Temporary Marriage on Islam-QA

Temporary marriage is always preffered over permenant marriage, however not everyone is in Islam there is no avenue for dating. So how is the woman able to correctly assess her sutor if she does not get the opportunity to spend time with him and see who he really is. Same applies to the man.

The ideals of marriage and what it is suppoed to represent is one thing and the reality of life is another, many times they don’t align, for one reason or another a person may not be able to permenantly marry. As humans we have an intrinsic need to build and maintain meaningful relationships, simply because that person can not marry doesn’t mean he/she should be deprived of the benefits of having a meaningful relationship.

Take Saudi arabia for example, externally they appear to be upholding high and ideal morals yet inside the society and among their youths there is rampant sexual deviancy and homosexuality. The ideals are one thing, the realities of life quiet another, and when human nature is supressed in an unnatural way, there are bound to be negative consequences as a result.

The existance or practice of temporary marriage doesn’t take anything away from the goals of marriage, as I said earlier, my wife was christian when we met, I wanted to meet someone whome I was compabile with and get to know that person before I get married to them. Without temporary marriage I would have only had two choices, either date anyway and commit a sin or stay alone. Even if I were to arrange a marriage through a mosque, there is no guarantee we would be compatible and would love one another. Imagine yourself being married to someone whome all you know about are from second hand accounts. Maybe it works for some people I don’t know and maybe it works for you. But you can’t expect everyone else’s circumstances to be the same as yours, this is a naive and unrealistc view.

Temporary Marriage on Islam-QA
Where and how was it forbidden?

Was there a verse in the quran that forbade it?

What is the isnad of the hadith you posted? Hadith are not reliable.

There are some logical problems with the hadith you supplied.
  1. The prophet did not allow “temporary marriage” , Allah did in the Quran
  2. Allah did not forbid it because there is no hadith qudsi or verse to that effect.

Yes, a hadith can not over-ride a verse from the Qur’an.

First, it is widely accepted that 4:24 was referencing temporary marriage.

Second, In order for temporary marriage to be forbidden, it would have to be abrogated in the Qur’an, no such abrogation exists

third, this hadith about Imam Ali (as) supposidly reporting Mut’ah was forbidden along with other things was dated to the year 7AH after the battle of Khaibar. You will find there are at least a dozen hadiths reporting the same event except they don’t mention Mut’ah being forbidden, was Ali (as) the only one who remembered it was forbidden?

fourth, Mut’ah was reported to be forbidden “until the day of resurrection” in two seperate events. First in the year 7AH and second in the year 10AH. How can something be forbidden “until the day of resurrection” twice?. Both hadiths are supposedly authentic, yet they contain contradictory statements. In the first Hadith Ali is reported to have said the prophet allowed it in the past but forbade it, in the 2nd hadith the prophet is reported to have said he allowed it (no mention of the previous prohibition here) then forbade it forever.
How do you reconsile the contradictions in both reports?

fifth, if you read the books on history, Imam Ali (as) is shown to be a proponent of Mut’ah, this hadith is at odds with this view.

In Verse 4:24, before the words relating to Mutah, there are words “Mukhsineen Ghair a Musaafikheen”. That means bring them into proper marriage, not any temporary marriage. Mukhsineen means you live like a proper husband and wife, not a secret husband and wife.

There is no room for any Mutah in verse 4:24.

Mmay be the Shia scholars (and some Sunnis too) were working on the idea of Mutah in that verse. Otherwise, the verse 4:23 and 4:24 are giving very good detail of who to marry and who not to marry and how to marry. All is there. But there is no Mutah ( i.e. a temporary unknown unrecorded secret marriage) in that verse.

The verse is telling taht you get married to ladies and live with them like husbands and wife live. But when you have lived a good life with them and do not need them any more as a wife then you may send them away after paying them their dowries which you had settled with them. There is no harm in adjustment about the Dowrie if both parties agree.

The verse is giving a complete guidance as to who to marry and who not to marry and about the dowrie and also about separation (divorce), all is there. Please read evrery word of the verses 23 and 24. There is no Mutah. It is only telling that you are not bound (tied) together for life. Separation / release is permitted.

If those words (fa masta’atum bihi minhunna) were not there then people would have felt that there was no way to end the relation. That is all. There is no concept of temporary or secret marriage in Islam.

I said there is other way of dating ( a pure way) in Islam if dating means to check up the beauty and behaviour of each party, there is allowance to proceed in another way and that would be quite legal, no sin at all. For that we may have to discuss the meaning of Nikah (the Arabic word Nikah) and its real true meaning. That could take up lot of time. The word Nikah is also being generally misunderstood by the Muslims.**

Where and how was it forbidden?
At Khaybar, when the Prophet (saws) forbade it.
What is the isnad of the hadith you posted? Hadith are not reliable.
I don’t have the isnad but this one was reported in Saheeh Muslim, and there was a similar hadith reported in At-Tirmidhi classed as saheeh hasan.

To say hadith are not reliable is to say that the Messenger of Allah saws is not reliable.
There are some logical problems with the hadith you supplied.

The Qur’an does not really “allow” it. You’re reading it to get that interpretation. Mut’ah had been allowed, and it was then forbidden. You could say for instance that alcohol was “allowed” but then forbidden in the same way. The Qur’an is quite clear that Muslims are to take what the Messenger commands and abstain from what he forbids. This ayah in particular (the one you referred to) talks about women in the past tense–it doesn’t sound like it’s a practice that’s supposed to keep going on.

Temporary marriage is **always **preffered over permenant marriage
huh …pl. explained how it is Always preferred over permanant marriage ??

Just because u made a mistake in life , pl. don’t try to justify it by writing this kind of comment . It will give non-Muslims a bad idea about Islamic marriage . Where in the Quran God says temporary marriage is preferred over permanant marriage for the believers ???
if she does not get the opportunity to spend time with him and see who he really is. Same applies to the man.
In the presence of the guardian , she is allowed to talk to the man who sent proposals for her . Also , Prophet (pbuh ) taught us to offer Isthekhara prayer before taking any major decision .

Pl. tell me , is temporary marriage for 1 hour , 2 hours is allowed ? A man can marry a woman at noon for 1 hour , then he will divorce her , then marry another woman for at night for 2/3 hours , do u really believe this kind of marriage is preferred over permanant marriage ???
Take Saudi arabia for example, externally they appear to be upholding high and ideal morals yet inside the society and among their youths there is rampant sexual deviancy and homosexuality.
So ??? Just because there could be some gay people in Saudi Arabia , how this justifies to go against the commands of God & His Messenger ?
Without temporary marriage I would have only had two choices, either date anyway and commit a sin or stay alone.
Where were your guardian , relatives , friends ??? Normally Muslims get married through the proposals relatives , friends . colleageus bring for them . They arrange the meeting for the would be couple in presence of family members .

Why one needs to go for dating ??? It’s haram. When a man & a woman stay together in private , Satan comes there as the third person & provoke them to commit adultery .

.
Even if I were to arrange a marriage through a mosque, there is no guarantee we would be compatible and would love one another. .
U must try hard to make your marriage successful . If it fails & u have to get divorced , you won’t be a sinner on the Final Day. But if u make haram things lawful here & somehow it works in this world , u will stand up as a sinner on the Final Day . So , it’s better to be a loser in this world rather than stand in front of God Almighty as a sinner .

I really think Sister Amy, Muslim Woman and planten should go over to the prestigious religious scholars in the Middle East and set them straight. 😃

I would like to discuss this ayah in greater detail.

And those of whom ye seek content, give unto them their portions as a duty.

What does this mean - “those of whom ye seek content”

I find it hard to read it in anyway other than to interpret that to mean - temporary wives.

I am open to another interpretation if you have one.

Read:

tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=4&tid=10829

See: Also (forbidden are) women already married, except those (captives and slaves) whom your right hands possess. Thus has Allah ordained for you. All others are lawful, provided you seek (them in marriage) with Mahr (bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) from your property, desiring chastity, not committing illegal sexual intercourse, so with those of whom you have enjoyed sexual relations, give them their Mahr as prescribed; but if after a Mahr is prescribed, you agree mutually (to give more), there is no sin on you. Surely, Allah is Ever AllKnowing, AllWise.

You realize that’s whom we get our information from, don’t you?

You’re the ones we’re trying to set straight.
