Texas School District Will Let Teachers Carry Guns

With proper education and a little common sense, guns are just not dangerous.

A swimming pool is FAR more likely to lead to a child’s death (about 1000 per year in the U.S.).

God Bless
OK let me understand this. FEWER homes have swimming pools than contain guns. MORE kids accidently die in swimming pools than by gun accident.

Do you think we should check to see if the Texas school district has any swimming pools? Maybe we need to take up a collection and send a concrete truck down there to fill in the pool to prevent accidental drownings.

After all, its all about the kids. 👍

you confuse me melensdad…lol…are you for or against these teachers being allowed to carry guns?😛

My wife is a teacher, both she and I believe she is a ‘sitting duck’ and should, if she chooses, and is capable to qualify in accord with the school district rules, be allowed to carry a concealed firearm on her person to protect her students and herself.

are these teachers paying for their guns, on their own? out of their own pockets?

you make an interesting point…I also wonder if there are stats (I’m sure there are) showing how many violent incidents in the home, have gone up, because families keep guns in the house for protection. It seems that every other day – I’m hearing about a husband who shot his wife and kids, and then himself. The gun is usually talked about as being already in the house for protection.
Interestingly if you look at a ‘functional’ home where nobody in the house is a ‘domestic abuser’ a ‘felon’ or a ‘drug abuser’ then you will find that the violence in homes is statistically non-existent. However, you will find that guns in the homes do not cause increases in violence. Violence is separate and apart from gun ownership. Guns may be used in violence. But there is no cause-effect relationship. You are either violent or you are not. If you are violent you may choose to use any number of weapons from feet and fists to guns, cars, baseball bats or, dare I say, swimming pools  The fact is that a gun does tend to make things more lethal, no doubt about that, but it does not correlate to causing violence.

Yes.

They also pay for their own training. The training is specified by the school district. Only specially trained teachers can even apply to the district for permission to carry a gun. This also applies to other members of the faculty/administration. Only after the school district determines you have the appropriate skill level, and have undergone the extra training, and proved your skills in tests, and judged you competent, may a faculty member carry a gun CONCEALED to school.

As I understand the rules from the interview with the school superintendent, the gun must be holstered on the body, hidden from view at all times. The school will NOT be releasing the names of the teachers/faculty that are granted permission to have a gun on the school grounds. The faculty member may choose to wear the gun daily, or only periodically. The goal is to have a psychological deterrent in addition to an actual deterrent.

Unfortunately, an unloaded locked up gun won’t do you much good if you need it.

My two sisters and I grew up with guns in my house. There were two shotguns and a rifle in plain sight in my parents closet, and the ammo was on the shelf.

None of us ever thought of playing with them.

Half the households in the U.S. have guns, and the number of accidental firearms deaths among children is less the 100 per year.

With proper education and a little common sense, guns are just not dangerous.

On the subject of how you store a firearm, there are factors that everyone must consider, and do what is best for their family. If you live where the risk of someone breaking in is significant (perhaps along the Mexican Border?), you may want to have a loaded weapon with you at all times. If you are a gun owner, have small children, and the risk of a break in is not high, you may want to keep the gun(s) in a safe place that is accessible in emergencies. We seem to have been talking mainly to people that know firearms. Shooting cans and targets is fun for kids, but you can not teach children what you don’t know. If you grew up in a home that did not have any firearms and you are not sure you want one, I recommend that you take the CCW course, and then decide if you want to own one.

If no one had access to guns…only police and our military…**in a perfect world…there would be less violence. **This is my opinon. I would not want my kids going to a school…where the teacher, if he/she snaps…can just grab a gun and start shooting. I don’t agree with it…it just seems like we are not treating the real problem, and just compounding the problem.

But what would keep the police and military from snapping? The reason we have the right to bear arms is just in case you do need protection. If the military was the only one with weapons, what is keeping them from making it a police state. Who would then be able to fight or defend against the one who have all the weapons?

If a teacher does snap, what would stop them from going and getting a gun and doing the same thing? Or a knife, or a taser? A gun does not equal violence. In Haiti they have people committing mass murders with Machete’s.

Barbarian:
“Crackhead”, um? Did you know that there’s no detectable behavior differences between crack use and snorting coke?

Just doesn’t sound very professional on your part. Seems like a LEO ought to know better.

Barbarian observes:
Unless you do ER duty, you don’t know what you’re talking about.
I think from all your statements you don’t have a clue about law enforcement/firearms training or healthcare, and this is coming from someone with some experience in both.
You’ve noticed that too, eh wabrams? 😉
Barbarian:
That argument could be used to refute driver’s training because that does not address anything ONCE TWO CARS COLLIDE.
Nice sidestep to avoid dealing with the issue. Why won’t you actually deal with it?
That’s not how Barbarian works, melensdad. He ignores any evidence that presented to him, and simply repeats his pet mantras over and over again, as if nothing has been said, then accuses you of not knowing what you’re talking about.

Sounds like the endgame, with the losers of ouf ammunition, and lashing out in frustration.

It’s the best concession, when they abandon reason and begin personal attacks.

Sounds like a rational approach to me. In the late 70s, the National Safety Council did a study based on accidental shootings, and NRA data on the number of people who had protected themselves by shooting or scaring off an intruder, that about 20% of Americans lived in places sufficiently dangerous that keeping a gun was safer than not having one.

Since violent crime has decreased markedly in subsequent years, that figure is probably a bit lower now.

did right to bear arms…extend to this though? I always viewed that ‘right’ as being for one’s security or protecting home, and family…it seems like we are stretching it to be applied everywhere…in public settings. I am asking the question…I don’t know what to make of it.:o

I have a bachelors degree in teaching…my hat is off to any and all teachers…who need to deal with this. They don’t get paid enough as it is, let alone be required to fire a gun, if necessary…it just is so sad and scary to me …

The ting is it doesn’t sound like anyone is being forced to carry a gun, or discharge it. They are being allowed to have a concealed weapon. I would view it differently if the State was giving each teacher a gun and require that they keep it with them at all times.

hmmm…that’s true.

It’s a reasonable argument, and why the Constitution assures the right to keep and bear arms. In the days of muskets and solid shot cannon, a tyrant would need a huge army to keep down an armed citizenry.

Unfortunately, that protection has been degrated by improvements in military weapons. In the Bosnian conflict, the Bosnians greatly outnumbered the Serb militias, but lacking heavy weapons, were unable to defend themselves, until they found a source of weapons.

Still, it’s better than nothing, and a factor that every potential tyrant has to keep in mind.

I’m sorry but I find this post utterly repulsive. You claim you are being personally attacked? No sir you are not. I see no evidence of that. What I do see is that you ignore the truth, repeat lies, and claim falsehoods as if they are proclamations issued by King Henry VIII – with an attitude of ‘convert or die’ supremacy that rings very hollow!

You sir, I feel, owe everyone who have honorably participated in this thread an apology.

I respect your opinion but history proves you dead wrong.

Was it not the case that Hitler’s police and military held the guns while the Jewish civilians were unarmed? Was it not also the case when Hitler took over Poland? Was that not similarly the case when Lenin took control of the then USSR? Was that not also the case with Pol Pot? With Idi Amin?

And so that we don’t have to look at the history books is that not the case RIGHT NOW in Darfur? And also in Myanmar where Bhuddist monks were slaughtered by the military?

I’m very sorry to inform you, but governments are probably the least trustworthy organizations to ‘trust’ with guns.

The right actually varies from state to state as each state has its own constitutional document, some guarantee the right with near absolute clarity, others not so much.

But bear in mind that to protect ‘one’s security’ as you thought, would apply to places other than just the home and all but 1 state (ILLINOIS) allow for some form of concealed carry of weapons in public.

The other thing to keep in mind is that these teachers are not being asked to protect themselves, as you imply. They are being asked, if they are so inclined, to protect the students in their care. There is a subtle, but very important, difference.

Also realize no school district is ‘telling’ the teachers to shoot a gun. The districts are simply allowing highly trained volunteers to carry guns for the purpose of protecting the students. This district in Texas is not the first to do so, it is just the latest district to allow it.
