A bookworm that I am, I usually love to be on my own but of course, I look out for friends who understands my introversion
We introverts can all be alone together. I LOVE reading but I have a severe headache at the moment…yet I can look at my computer screen. Thanks for joining us.

There is another girl around my age who posts on CAF frequently who lives in Singapore. She also studies psychology. Maybe you two will bump into each other.

Also, there is a Japanese Catholic somewhere around here.

My neighbours, then. I’m a HK girl (please, don’t tag China).

Been watching/reading the news about racist violence in Europe, America and elsewhere (especially, against Asians) in conjunction with coronavirus. I hope our Catholic friends here do not condone such extremism ( in the form of violence and ignorance).

I haven’t seen any anti-Asian violence or sentiment here in the Chicago metro area.

The thing about the American media is the it loves portraying the US as a deeply racist country and will jump on anything some idiot does and portray it as a national issue when most of us just do not care what race you are. There have actually been a lot of racist incidents that have been exposed as hoaxes in recent years, like the whole Jussie Smollet case last year.

I never would. Hong Kong has its own economy, its own culture, and its own currency

I don’t know a single case anywhere within hundreds of miles of where I live with that happening.

I condemn it instead.

@adamhovey1988 it was prolly the media-influence hitting my head hard like @redbetta said.

There was a time when I was harrowing my parents constantly to make them pack me off to the US. The advance Americans have made in the field of science and technology especially is/was “awe inspiring” and I used to think that if I could just study in one of the universities there, the area of my potato size brain would increase four fold (why not?) .

But then, suddenly my view of America as a land of freedom and knowledge (education) drastically changed over the years as (the) news of Asians being constantly bullied, made headlines.

But now, I’ve realized that what we see and hear is only half true because we are never really shown the whole truth. I don’t jump to conclusions, and I don’t “judge” based solely on one video of a Muslim attacking a non-Muslim etc. That said, I think I unintentionally ignored the history of black people suffering from their basic (lack of) human rights ( the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s) ; selfish and ignorant much to think that just because Asians were bullied, I considered the place unfit for me to go? Racism prevails almost everywhere and not just as shown in the tv and other media outlets, I’ve learned.

The thing is, a lot of Americans and western Europeans are terrifed about being called racist more than anything and will go out of there way, often to extremes, to prove how not-racist they are.

Definitely a lot of places to do it. The drive from Montreal to Halifax which is mostly through Quebec along the St. Lawrence river is incredibly beautiful. I haven’t done it since I was 15.

Well, I’m not saying that the United States does not have a history of racism, I had ancestors on my dad’s side that were Romani(you don’t hear about them much, but that’s because in historical records, they’re usually called indentured servants, in spite of actually being slaves, in Romania, they actually were called slaves) slaves, and ancestors on my mom’s side that were forced to Oklahoma against their own will because of their heritage. So yeah there’s historical precedents
for thinking that, but I mean look at the white Australia policy, or at apartheid in South Africa, or the Dutch slave trade. I live in the Deep South, and there are people that think that if you own a Confederate flag you’re somehow a racist. It’s a flag. In the South, we legitimately don’t think of it like that, it’s just some people use it for a racist purpose. You’d be just as welcome in America, as you would be anywhere else.

I’ll have to get the proper documents together and try that when I get a chance. Things have changed since I was a kid with regards to that, so I want to be able to get back to the States.

Just need a passport to get in, that’s it. Probably easier for you to get in here than it is for me to get in there. Whenever I roadtrip down there, I rent my cars in the U.S. as border patrol hassles me when I’m crossing with a rental…fun times.

I don’t have a passport at the moment, that’s my issue. But you’re right, my sister actually went to Canada, Niagara Falls, who does have a passport, and she had a hard time getting back, in spite of being a native-born American. In a way, I kind of get it because of 9/11 and all that stuff, but at the same time, it’s a bit of a pain, but a passport is not that expensive, have to have the money first. I mean I’m 32, the last time I was in Canada, is when my dad was still alive and he died when I was nine, we went to Ontario because we were in Michigan anyway. my mom really wants to go to Maine, and Maine borders Canada, I feel like if I’m that close to an international border, might as well cross it.

Maine borders on New Brunswick. Fredricton, Moncton and Saint Johnn are the big cities there worth seeing. You can take the ferry from Saint John to Nova Scotia. There’s also a ferry that runs between Maine and Nova Scotia, too. Both provinces are definitely worth seeing!

I actually have wanted to go to the Maritimes for a while. I want to go to Québec sometime, too.

Bumping this thread because I can’t let it die before I go on break.
