Statistically burka wearing Muslim women, and Muslim women in general, are a non threat. The overwhelming vast majority of extremists who engage in violent actions are men. So overwhelming that an attack carried out by a woman, let alone a burka wearing woman, gains international media attention. At the college I attend there are so many Muslim women in burkas that if I didn’t know I was in America I would assume that I was in one of the more Muslim countries in the Middle East (and I’ve been there). In my whole life, I’ve never seen so many women in burkas in America. There are large groups of them everywhere on campus, and many of them are in full burkas which only show the eyes. I’m not going to lie. When I see the burka, I think “serious Muslim”. When I think “serious Muslim”, I think “how serious?”. Because, statistically, the more serious about Islam a Muslim is the more of a chance there is that they could be an extremist or be connected to one. The secular Muslims are the ones that I’m not worried about. But things have definitely changed since Obama has been in office and since the government has been going out of its way to welcome Muslims here. So, yeah. I have no choice but to live with it.
Also, do you really think a Muslim woman (regardless of what she is wearing) at an American university is really a potential extremist? We are talking about an extremism that falls on the far, far, right-side of the spectrum (i.e. individuals that think educated/independent women are “bad.”).
