I thought it would be worth making a thread about the John Bolton book “The Room Where It Happened.” There are a number of excerpts out about it now and the book will be available in various places today and tomorrow.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

From the book listing on Amaon:
As President Trump’s National Security Advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves.

The result is a White House memoir that is the most comprehensive and substantial account of the Trump Administration, and one of the few to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the President, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a President for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation. “I am hard-pressed to identify any significant Trump decision during my tenure that wasn’t driven by reelection calculations,” he writes. In fact, he argues that the House committed impeachment malpractice by keeping their prosecution focused narrowly on Ukraine when Trump’s Ukraine-like transgressions existed across the full range of his foreign policy—and Bolton documents exactly what those were, and attempts by him and others in the Administration to raise alarms about them.

He shows a President addicted to chaos, who embraced our enemies and spurned our friends, and was deeply suspicious of his own government. In Bolton’s telling, all this helped put Trump on the bizarre road to impeachment. “The differences between this presidency and previous ones I had served were stunning,” writes Bolton, who worked for Reagan, Bush 41, and Bush 43. He discovered a President who thought foreign policy is like closing a real estate deal—about personal relationships, made-for-TV showmanship, and advancing his own interests. As a result, the US lost an opportunity to confront its deepening threats, and in cases like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea ended up in a more vulnerable place.

Bolton’s account starts with his long march to the West Wing as Trump and others woo him for the National Security job. The minute he lands, he has to deal with Syria’s chemical attack on the city of Douma, and the crises after that never stop. As he writes in the opening pages, “If you don’t like turmoil, uncertainty, and risk—all the while being constantly overwhelmed with information, decisions to be made, and sheer amount of work—and enlivened by international and domestic personality and ego conflicts beyond description, try something else.”

Would be a great discussion, but this is probably not the forum for an honest discussion.

Those actually reading the book will be few and far between.

Nothing posted here, as far as I can recall from my limited time here, changes anyone’s mind.

Instead, it will turn into a subjective rant about the character of John Bolton.

I’ll pop the corn!

Apparently the PDF of the book was released somewhere.

Where Bolton was necessary to speak was the impeachment hearing. He chose not to.

Now we have to read about it? And he can make money?

Nope. Too little too late.

Neocons aren’t a trustworthy source.
Didnt’t trump promise he was going to hire “only the best”? It’s been a non stop revolving door resignations, firings. etc. Makes sense I suppose, elect a clown and you get a circus.

Trump at first if I remember right stayed away from the neocons but gradually drifted towards them. In any case, no, I don’t consider neocons a trustworthy source at all.

Bolton was associated with PNAC for crying out loud.

I don’t think Bolton served in the previous administration. There’s no need for you to bring it up

Weird how many people who work closely with Trump come away with a negative opinion. Funny coincidence, that.

Which depresses me immensely. I can honestly say that this forum’s community is one of the last places I’d go for genuine discussion or serious advice.
I’m not sure what I was expecting when I joined, but I figured disagreements would typically result in people debating esoteric points about something, and not just outright attacking people while hiding behind the Church as an excuse.

And he did…as long as they didn’t view him like the kid in the Emperors New Clothes…when that happened, he reverted to his only real management experience as the host on a reality TV Show, hollering his catchword phrase, “You’re Fired!”

I think Bolton might have interesting revelations, but the impeachment ship has sailed and I’m not sure anything will change the mind of his supporters.

Likewise, his detractors probably can’t think any worse of him.

So, ho hum. I’m not going line his pockets.

Bolton is a warmonger who from what I understand saw military action as the answer to everything. It’s amusing to see centre-left Americans fawn over him because he criticised Trump.

The fact that Bolton is like the poster boy for baby boomer chickenhawks doesn’t mean he’s lying though.

And how will anyone assess whether he is? Realistically, Trump’s supporters will dismiss the claims, his detractors will assume they are factual, and fair-minded people will likely think some of it is true, but question the overall credibility due to the desire to make money off of a book rather than testify.
