While I agree that we cannot be single issue voters, I and my prior bishop disagree that all issues are equal. The OP’s article focuses on three important issues: abortion, same-sex marriage and gender identity, but much more than these three is at stake in this election, and these other “equally sacred” issues must also be considered.
Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, in paragraphs 34-37, addresses the question of whether it is morally permissible for a Catholic to vote for a candidate who supports an intrinsic evil – even when the voter does not agree with the candidate’s position on that evil. The only moral possibilities for a Catholic to be able to vote in good conscience for a candidate who supports this intrinsic evil are the following:
a. If both candidates running for office support abortion or “abortion rights,” a Catholic would be forced to then look at the other important issues and through their vote try to limit the evil done; or,b. If another intrinsic evil outweighs the evil of abortion. While this is sound moral reasoning, there are no “truly grave moral” or “proportionate” reasons, singularly or combined, that could outweigh the millions of innocent human lives that are directly killed by legal abortion each year.
Given the fact that the last reports show 862,000 abortions in the US in 2017 and that an estimated 40-50 million abortions occur worldwide I don’t think the bishops would agree with you. What other issue produce 40-50 million murders every year? This is a rather dated reference from 2008. The world has changed. I’m not sure that the bishops would come to the same conclusion now that they did in 2008.
On this specific point, I do not believe Joe Biden ever called abortions a moral good. If so, that would actually cross the line into heresy.Abortions will continue unabated so long as they are defended as a “moral good”, which pro-aborts do.
No, he didn’t. But I still see no Catholic case for Biden. The man is currently accused of rape - RAPE!! - and the media is like . . .On this specific point, I do not believe Joe Biden ever called abortions a moral good.
accused - ACCUSED!!!The man is currently accused of rape - RAPE!!
It is amazing what gets swept under the rug when you support expansion of abortion rights. The metoo movement that was so loud during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings are silent now…because now the accused is “their guy”.Yea, thanks. I said accused, but I’m sure you caught that. It is not rash judgment to expect a deeper investigation into these allegations.
That may not be possible for a 27 year old he-said/she-said. Hey, if there is still any physical evidence to be found, I am all for checking into it.It is not rash judgment to expect a deeper investigation into these allegations.
I agree, and the hypocrisy frustrates me to no end.The metoo movement that was so loud during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings are silent now…because now the accused is “their guy”.
