Time to give the women a pay raise

No, the reason why women got paid the same as the men, because they complained that they were bringing in as much revenue as the men.

Almost true, however, they don’t play equal sets as the men

Women play best out of 3, where men play best out of 5

In fact, some fans feel they got shortchanged when a top woman player beat a new player in two short sets.

No, men’s sports are faster paced, more physical, better athletes. We are born to enjoy an exciting event more than a lesser event. I can’t say I have watched women’s soccer, so I do not know for sure the extent of this in soccer. But I have watched women’s basketball at all levels, it is far less entertaining than men’s basketball at every level.

Yes it is more heavily marketed, but companies typically spend their marketing dollars on products more likely to sale.

In the end, it’s the market which decides what the owners are willing to pay teams, and how much tennis and golf players get paid

Last week at the PGA 3M Open, the winner got $1.2 million

Women golfers tried to get equal pay when it was easily shown that they don’t T-OFF from the same distance, and few networks cover women’s golf due to the lack of interest.

I don’t. I watch what I want to watch and I would hope that you and everyone else is strong and self-aware enough to do the same. The notion that people are sheep completely at the mercy of advertisers is, pardon the expression, pure bunk. The media go where the interest is; that is how they make their money.
And the notion that media are sheep completely at the mercy of what the public tells them they are interested in is, pardon me, equally bunk. Media CREATE that interest in their choices of what to report on and how to report on it, as well as what to leave out. And that’s why advertisers advertise with them.

If the media couldn’t manufacture interest and capture people who previously were uninterested, there would be no point to them from a sports or advertising perspective - they would simply be preaching to the choir. And advertisers would not continue to advertise with them, nor would sports engage with them, because their viewership and revenues would stagnate.

I disagree with the premise of the thread title and OP. I suspect any difference in pay is directly related to how much revenue the men earn vs the women, despite the women’s success.

No, media are predators, not prey. Predators go where the prey is. Otherwise they would go hungry. And even stagnant viewership is a vast number of eyes to capture, so why wouldn’t they continue to broadcast or sell advertising? Unless of course there were an alternative that was growing, say for example if more people started watching women’s World Cup…

Except they don’t actually perform more. Dramatically less competition from around the world where women’s programs aren’t funded means a small handful of really good women’s teams in wealthy countries and that’s it.

The higher pay in the men’s is related to the revenue. Of course they dont win as much going against goliath-levels of competition in countries where the sport is almost worshipped.

The sport literally can’t afford to pay them the same so the only way it could be done is through a federal tax directly into the athlete’s pocket or if a billionaire was bored.

Correct.

What drives me crazy about this is where do the women on the US Women’s team expect US Soccer to get the money to pay them more?

The men’s teams that win the World Cup get far more money from FIFA than the Women. US Soccer can’t make up that difference and that’s who the women sued.

Where is that money supposed to come from?

t’s about the percentages. It’s about the money!
The women have outperformed the men time and again, yet they get paid way less than the men.
Those who perform, should get paid.
Those who do not, should not.
Very simple principle.
No they haven’t. Men’s and Women’s soccer are not apples to apples comparisons. While the women have performed admirably against their competition, that does not mean that they are playing competitors of equal skill compared to what the Men’s leagues see. This is akin to saying that because the Calgary Stampeders won the Grey Cup for the Canadian Football League, they should be paid on an equal basis with the New England Patriots. The levels of competition are no where near equal and the Canadian league draws far less revenue as a result, hence they should not be paid on an equal level with NFL players. If the women’s team wants to be paid equally to the men’s team, they are welcome to try out for the US Men’s Soccer Team and compete on the same playing field. Considering they were beaten by a men’s youth team two years ago, I doubt they will take up this offer.

LOL – true.

Let’s see the US Women’s World Cup champion team play against the Men’s World cup current Champion and see how they do.

If they really want equal pay - then they should challenge the reigning Men’s World Cup championship team to a game to see who really is the world’s best.

But if you have a stagnant viewership who would watch anyway even if you did little or no advertising or promotion, and aren’t interested in getting new viewers and fans, AND don’t think advertising and promotion are capable of getting you new viewers or fans, then there is no point at all in spending the $$$$ on marketing and such, it would just be money flushed down the toilet, no?

Yes, most of the world viewed soccer as a men’s only sport until very recently. 20-30 years ago, people in Europe thought it was weird that so many girls played soccer in the US. There are two reasons why the women’s team succeeds while the men’s fails, one of them is that the rest of the world don’t have that many younger girls playing and developing. The other is that the US does not have enough younger boys playing and developing.

In short, no.

“Stagnant” and “would watch anyway” are not the same thing. The numbers may only stay the same through clever marketing.

I have come to the conclusion that my continued engagement in this thread is essentially wasted time. Peace to you.

If a woman thinks she should be paid the same as a man, the answer is EASY. Have her put some skin in the game. Join the PGA, or the NBA or the MLB or the NFL and let’s see how you do. I’d be willing to bet that there are millions of people like me who would pay good money to watch a woman knock Tom Brady on his a$$.

Or one of the high paying soccer leagues in Europe …

They are paid what the market bears. Professional sports employs millions of people from ticket counters to pizza delivery boys. What they are paid is fair to those who voluntarily support it.

You don’t have to like sports but there’s a heckuva lot of good that comes from it.
Often, local sports clubs are able to work at the concessions booth at the big sporting competitions (e.g., pouring beer at the hockey games leading up to the Stanley Cup Final). This is a huge fundraising opportunity for these parents, and the monies they raise enables them to keep their kids in their chosen sport. Hard work, but it sure beats selling candy bars for a dollar or hitting up all their relatives and work associates with over-priced wrapping paper!!

Keep in mind that low-income children and teens often get help from various organizations so that they can play on sports teams. It’s the middle-income families that struggle to keep their kids in a sport–they’re too poor to pay the bills out of their income, but too rich to qualify for any aid from park districts or other organizations. Fundraisers are a great thing for these families, and big sporting events and national teams are a source of these fundraisers.

If they were performing at the same event and beating out the men, then yes. But you are comparing apples to oranges. Men’s sports and women’s sports are two different things, hence the segregation. In this case, paying out salaries equivalent to what the men earn would literally bankrupt the women’s league, so that’s a minor issue too.
