To be deep in the bible is to cease to be Catholic

Just an observation;
Doesn’t look like you’re going the extra mile to me bookgirl.
I would think someone to whom *Jesus spoke to * about the CCC would be overflowing with His spirit. On the contrary Giver has stayed the course in a pretty hostile environment and has remained unscathed. 😉 Al
Stayed the course? I suppose it’s a little easier to stay the course when you only preach and don’t answer questions…

God Bless,

Huh? Who are the brothers?
The RSV calls them the ‘brethren’. The first version I quoted was the NIV I think. They are the disciples.

He has answered every question in the most honest way he can only the mind of the flesh is demanding proof for spiritual things.
Reminds me of the gospel where the religious Jews just couldn’t grasp what and who Jesus was even though he spoke in the synogogues and streets for years. I think JN 5:25-47 is especially to the point. Al

As I said before, Jesus also tells us to “shake the dust from our sandals…” and move on. We are also told not to cast pearls before swine. I think the members here have gone over and above their obligation. When someone is deaf, they will not begin to hear just because you yell louder and closer to their ear…

Giver said: Giver, Look at the news. Seems like very frequently we hear about some heinous crime committed. Anyone can do a search and find many of the horrors committed because these people believed God was telling them to commit certain atrocities. You tell others to just ask Jesus. So did Jesus tell you that the Catholic Church was wrong? You keep avoiding answering that question. HOW DO YOU KNOW IT IS JESUS TALKING TO YOU? You have been given explanations showing you in detail the truths that God has revealed and proof. You have given us zilch other than throwing bible verses around and hijacking several threads and saying “I’m not allowed in this forum to share personal revelations” You misunderstand what the moderators mean by “unapproved private revelations”

Please answer Bookgirl’s answer to you You have insinuated that Jesus told you that the CC was wrong. Is Jesus flip-flopping here? Is Jesus confused? Is Jesus just pulling somebody’s leg? Is Jesus just a big joker telling people different things and laughing that they are all going different directions? Who is right? And don’t reply with “I received the Holy Spirit”.
For that matter how do you know anything? How could Jesus expect anyone to hear Him? If Jesus were alive today and he was preaching to you how would you know if it was true or false? Could it be that Jesus told him the CCC was wrong for him and maybe it’s not wrong for you. Maybe he doesn’t need to refer to a manual to be in relationship. Maybe I do. “If it is my will that he remain till I come what is that to you? Follow me!” “To them *who received * Him He gave the power to become sons of God…” “To him who has more will be given, to him who has not even the little he has will be taken away.”
How do you know your spouse loves you? Does it invalidate that relationship if I doubt the truth of it? I think not.
Love is not afraid to be wrong. The flesh is very afraid to be wrong. Love is too busy loving to be worried about the payback.
What I’m talking about is living in a different gear than the one we were born with. Al

And I thought this was an apologetics forum! Let’s be very honest with ourselves. All you who now have hatred burning through you raise your hands. …Wow! that’s nearly all of you!
This is the same hatred that crucified the one you claim to know so thoroughly.
Publically call me swine but that won’t vindicate you in the Presence of the Truth. Only loving will.
Peace to you. Al

I have no hatred whatsoever. I love ya man! 😃 I and I think a few others get tired of answering the same question or allegations over and over and over and over and over again posted by the same person. I posted a very relevant question to him about 100 posts ago and he justed shined me on. After I took the time to respond to his question. It just gets a little tiring when it is the same person with the same worn out attacks and no inclination of answering counter questions. If it is a new person asking the same old stuff, no problem, I don’t think anyone has a problem answering them. It wasn’t thier fault they didn’t notice the same question posted by someone else many posts ago. But hte same guy doing the same stuff… :banghead:

People always personalize the swine quote. I think maybe they have a guilty conscience or something. I did not call you or anyone else in particular swine. I was quoting scripture. Man, I had better not throw out any St. Ignatius of Antioch, people would really get testy… 😃

No. Which disciples? The 11? Or is John writing about “brethren” of the post-pentecostal Church?

Thanks for taking the swine back. You traded for a guilty conscience rap. What a deal! 😃

Something tells me there’s some -hair -splittin-a-comin. 😃 (I didn’t say apostles- I said disciples- not necessarily the same thing.)
This is from the 21st chapter of St John’s Gospel. I assume you have a bible. This event is after the chapter where the Lord appeared in the upper room and breathed the Holy Spirit on them. This is the scene on the sea shore. I can not say if it is 11 because the text doesn’t say how many were there in this scene. Read it- it gives ya goosebumps. Al

Valiant effort, but I already brought up these points. Giver’s response? Ignore them and go gliding on pretending to know what he’s talking about. I give up! Giver doesn’t want to learn anything here. He only wants to tell Catholics they’ve got everything all wrong, so what is the use? He’s just trolling
It’s like nailing Jello to a wall…

First off, he has totally ignored my question, which is “Why do you use the Bible as a middle man, rather than going straight to Jesus.” This and similar questions have just bounced off. Second, I’m insulted by the insinuation that we’re like the “religious Jews” who couldn’t grasp who Jesus was. Can you read the states of our souls? Do you know what’s in our hearts?

I find it odd that you would accuse me of “demanding proof for spiritual things”; could you please tell me how / when I did this? I would not leap to accuse someone of having a “mind of the flesh” unless I was really sure about it, because it would be false testimony were I wrong.

Now, if we can move past such ugliness I would greatly appreciate it.
And I thought this was an apologetics
forum!
Apologetics:

  1. *] The branch of theology that is concerned with defending or proving the truth of Christian doctrines.
*] Formal argumentation in defense of something, such as a position or system.

Note the words: PROVING and FORMAL ARGUMENTATION.

This includes two-way dialog, which has not been engaged in by Giver thus far. This is why I have stopped trying with Giver - he doesn’t answer questions, and does not appear concerned with an honest and sincere seeking of the Truth. Rather, he appears concerned with proselytizing. Proselytizing is not to be confused with Apologetics. Oh, could you please remind me what is said in Matt 18:15-17?
Let’s be very honest with ourselves. All you who now have hatred burning through you raise your hands. …Wow! that’s nearly all of you!
This forum has some of the most loving people I have ever met; I am surprised that you think these posts are full of hatred! Perhaps you should find a Protestant site and look at the dialogs with Catholics there - it would serve as a good basis for comparison.

In closing, let me affirm that I see you as a separated brother in Christ, and would humbly welcome you as such anytime.

    God Bless,

I do not want to insult you. I’m sorry you were offended. Like you, I can only go by the words I read and it looks like you (plural)were not understanding where he was coming from. The bible* is * the Word of God as is Jesus. I know you know that so don’t be offended but I needed you to see I know where you are coming from. I don’t know what’s in your heart other than what you show by your words (posts). Talking faith is never fluffy stuff as you well know. Peace and open heartedness from me, Al-

Please, Al. I know that pericope by heart. There were 7. The 12 are referred to as disciples, brothers, and apostles at various points. I’m not hair splitting. But you made an assertion that there was diversity of opinion. It would not be hair splitting to ask where that diversity lay.

Mercygate, I’m confused. Why did you ask me if you knew it by heart? It is not my assertion at all. It is in the scripture…“So the saying spread abroad…Yet Jesus did not say…” I did not say there was a diversity of opinion I said they misunderstood. (meaning it’s possible they all missunderstood except for the beloved disciple.) Thanks for wanting to clarify, Al

I thank you for your graciousness and I accept your apology. I further apologize for the harsh tone of my posts.

Having said that, you need to distinguish between God the Word (Jesus) and the (written) Word of God. From what your post is saying (and I’m going on that–I don’t claim to know anyone’s heart) the Bible is Jesus. You have to distinguish between the Word of God and the Word of God–the term has dual meanings. In one use, it refers to the Word Made Flesh–the Messiah, Jesus Christ. In another sense, it means the written words of Holy Scripture. The Bible is not Jesus. This is not to say that Scripture is not of God, just that Scripture is not God.

I will say that Givers experience- according to his words- is that he’s in a moment by moment walk with the Lord and this is not something that can be proven unless you see the fruit of his life.
As to wether you are giving false testimony that is absurd. You are telling it as you see it. It is not so black and white. Now, if we can move past such ugliness I would greatly appreciate it.
“I came to bring a sword.” The truth is we are all learning something. Maybe not what we think we set out to but there is something important in all of this frustration.

I will note them. Thank you. I never did like the second definition.

No. I meant that in light of that particular post I made there would certainly be hatred- not in all or any of the other posts. Perhaps you should find a Protestant site and look at the dialogs with Catholics there - it would serve as a good basis for comparison.
I am here to try and save my Catholicism (spelling?) not to interview protestants. I’m am here because this is the cream of the crop and I don’t want to waist any more of my short time somewhere else. I am learning quite a bit. (believe it or not 😃 )

The Bible is not Jesus. This is not to say that Scripture is not of God, just that Scripture is not God.

Yes, I agree. But I do believe that He is available directly in the faithful reading of the Scriptures.
Al

His words and words about him are most certainly available in Scripture–OT and NT. However, this is not the only source for things we know about Jesus. The Apostles learned straight from him, and then passed the teachings on to their successors. As John says, if everything Jesus said and did were written down the whole world could not contain the books. Read the Didache for a pretty good indication of what the early Christians believed–this was written about AD 90.

You also have to remember that the Bible wasn’t around for the first 300 years of Christianity. It wasn’t until the Councils of Hippo and Carthage defined the Canon of Scripture that the Bible existed as we now know it. These are councils of the Catholic Church. If the first three centuries of Christians didn’t have a Bible, how did they have access to Jesus in the way you say we have it now? They had access to Jesus through the ministry of the Church–and even better than that, the Blessed Sacrament–but that’s a whole other thread.

Pax tecum…this is fun stuff, sir.
