Comments posted by anonymous posters in an internet forum are, at least from my experience, a more pure experience of the level of maturity of a community. With anonymity comes the freedom of expression of self that allows any manner of persona released, without possible repercussion in the ‘real world’, were societal repercussions abound. In an environment like this, people are more prone to be relaxed, and with relaxation comes more genuine presentations of self, precisely because any opposition can be dismissed by not reading or misreading the comments given.

It is far to easy for me to go to a church of any denomination and be left wondering 'is this how they are all the time? Is this simply a mask?" And even on attending extra activities, such as game nights with my 20s and 30s group, I still am left wondering. When all you see is the positives, where do you go for a better view of how people really live their lives? (especially when you are in self doubt of faith, why to have it, what to believe, and so on.)

So to answer your implied question of “Why don’t you just leave or ignore the forums then? Why are you letting this be so personal?” It’s personal because of the raw representation of Christ many of you are presenting. I know that no one can be perfect, but in several of these instances I’m not even seeing an attempt to be Christian. I’m seeing people who declare they are Christian, and by actions, show me the things that suggest that Christians are hardly much different than secular people, only using their ‘Christianity’ to cover for their hates, biases, and desires.

So, to tie this in to the topic at hand, why is it NOT disturbing that this is the reaction I am seeing relatively often with the exception of a few, to try and repeat the same wrong information and inappropriate comparisons to argue against helping a group that is being mistreated and misunderstood? Rin has done a rather nice job in the past (as have others) of presenting information and science that God would have given us to understand his universe and why things are the way they are, better. Why then are we so hung up on trying to push others out of the conversation through ignoring points provided? To have those who gloat about pushing someone who’s trying to spread understanding, even if their understanding is wrong, is also wrong, because how will we grow unless we actually listen to each other, maybe even meet halfway?
I would not for a second participate in something that weakened my faith in any way

I’ve been watching this thread for a while. It’s really nice to know that ultimately, when someone is frustrated about being ignored for providing information and addressing points that have been circulated around the forums more than I care to count, some middle school mentality of celebrating someone leaving in frustration is still an acceptable course of action. I miss those days where it didn’t matter what the information brought to the table was, it just mattered who lasted the longest repeating what they wanted to believe.

I look forward to a day when Christians will actually act like Christ. Actually having kindness, forgiving people, not gloating about how ‘right’ they are… I say this and there’s many things I’ve learned that are wrong with what Jesus did vs what was needed and what he says, the issues of how to know what parts of the bible are literal and what parts are figurative or poetic. In the year that it’s been since I’ve last posted, I’d say that I was barely hanging on to any faith, and the behavior i’m seeing here, the lack of compassion, the lack of empathy, the eagerness to judge, is almost enough for me to abandon my faith completely because if this is how God’s people behave toward each other and how they want to treat or control others, I want absolutely nothing more to do with that same belief.

I hope your glee is worth it. Like in the Ishbane Conspiracy novel I once read (akin in nature to the Screwtape Letters), the enemy, if we even have one, would delight more in his opponents worrying more about winning arguments than winning souls.
The comments Jessica quoted do come off as snarky.
Marco’s comment, I am certain, was not snarky in the least. He was replying to estesbob … not to Rin, nor about Rin.

Here is the context:
Well that was a mistake. I was curious as what the number of transsexuals who were being abused in restrooms so I googled “transsexuals abused restrooms”. I can not post tor describe the links I got for fear of being banned for life.
Thank you for sparing us. :o I also wonder to what degree such a law will help sexual predators in accessing bathrooms they otherwise couldn’t……!
Marco is telling estesbob “thank you for sparing us” from posting links to the apparently unsavoury websites that he encountered upon doing a Google search; Marco’s comment wasn’t directed to Rin at all.

When you read these threads, remember that there are many people who agree with you about the unchristian behaviour. Like you, they have responded with a plea for more charity and for people to at least be willing to discuss the issue - rather than the ad hoc attacks that happen.

So please don’t judge all Christians by the way some Christians on here act. Those you are reacting to are simply the ones that yell the loudest. It doesn’t actually make them the majority. Don’t let it hurt your faith because they aren’t worth it.

Also remember, people like Rin are also an example of those on this board who say they are Christian. If you want to get anything out of this forum, you need to focus on the posters who do act in line with their faith and ignore the dregs.

Whenever somebody claims that people are being uncharitable and they’re considering leaving the church or their faith has been damaged I always take it as an indication they’re trying to shut the discussion down. Many people take mere disagreement as being uncharitable… The idea that objecting to dressing of an eight-year-old boy like a girl and demanding he be allowed to use a girls restroom is absurd on it’s face. Pointing this out is not uncharitable -it is merely expressing the truth and for those who disagree the truth can be quite painful. Better to try and shut the discussion down than to face the absurdity of what it is they support.

If one’s faith is so precarious that it can indeed be damaged
By vigorous discussions with people who disagree with them they should not participate in such discussions

Isnt that a judgmental view of your fellow Christians?

Maybe your faith isn’t at that stage of development where you can truly appreciate what it means to avoid sin because you have not seen as much damage it can do in a persons life as much as others have?

I haven’t seen anyone gloating at all, just showing truthful loyalty to the essence of the faith, an essence that you seem to disagree with.

What is the essence of Christianity? That we are SINNERs and must REPENT and accept God’s REDEMPTION. You seem to be OK with ignoring the impact of sin in other peoples lives, while others disagree.

Why are we wrong and you are right when we are talking about repentance and redemption of fellow sinners? Do you want them to stay unredeemed?

What is more charitable than to give people the opportunity to admit their sins, repent and be redeemed?

Just because some go with every secular wind that blows doesn’t mean the rest of us are not Christians.

I’m not yelling. I haven’t seen anyone yelling. Why so judgmental?
It doesn’t actually make them the majority.
But we are the majority because we understand what the Gospel message really is, a chance to submit our will to God’s will and be forgiven after we repent from our sin.
Don’t let it hurt your faith because they aren’t worth it.
Wow. Just wow is almost all I can say to this. We aren’t worth it, but unrepentant sinners are?

Wow. Where is your love for fellow Christians who are also trudging along that same difficult straight and narrow way?
Also remember, people like Rin are also an example of those on this board who say they are Christian.
Yes, it is easy to say you are a Christian on the internet, or a Catholic, or a Muslim or just about anything else. But the loyalty you show, the depth of the moral values system that you reflect and how precious it is to you; those say something that cant be faked.
If you want to get anything out of this forum, you need to focus on the posters who do act in line with their faith and ignore the dregs.
Now we are the dregs?

Way to go ‘CatholicSheila’ to demonstrate the love of Christ for your fellow brothers and sisters of the faith. I feel so edified.

Maybe we should just throw out all the churches dogmas and doctrines and just make it into a big social club so you and your heroes can show us all how to really act like Christ.

agreed

Isnt it amazing how some can protest ‘judgmentalism’ by being judgmental?

I find it fascinating that despite you talking about what the Gospel really says the only time you mention love is while castigating CatholicSheila and complain she doesn’t show it to you. Is love in your reading of the Gospel only to be shown to Christians?

Show me the specific statement I made that castigated ‘CatholicSheila’, or apologize.

I am sick to death of being accused of being unloving when my agope for people is the ONLY reason I bother to even discuss this ugly topic.

I never said you weren’t Christians. I said that you are not the only people in this thread claiming to be Christians and that there are others who behave very differently.
I’m not yelling. I haven’t seen anyone yelling. Why so judgmental?
It’s a figure of speech.
But we are the majority because we understand what the Gospel message really is, a chance to submit our will to God’s will and be forgiven after we repent from our sin.
Views and behaviour aren’t the same thing. You can have the right views and the wrong behaviour. Or you can have the wrong views and the right behaviour.

FYI I agree with you on the gospel message. That doesn’t mean I have to agree with everything you do or say.
Wow. Just wow is almost all I can say to this. We aren’t worth it, but unrepentant sinners are?
Wow. Where is your love for fellow Christians who are also trudging along that same difficult straight and narrow way?
You believe you are worth someone losing their faith over? That’s very arrogant.

I’m not worth that. If someone says that I am behaving in a way that is a danger to their faith I have two reactions. Firstly, to consider how I am behaving. Perhaps they are right and I am not behaving in a Christian manner. I’m human and unfortunately I don’t always behave in a Christian manner. Part of this is determining if their problem is what I am saying or how I am saying it.

The second is to tell them that I’m not worth them losing their faith. That I am sorry that I have had that effect but that in future they need to divorce their view of Christainity from their view of me. A persons faith is too precious for me to get caught up in my ego.

This is very much in line with what estesbob said. He thinks he’s right, but he acknowledged that him having the opportunity to be right isn’t as important as Jessica’s faith and perhaps she shouldn’t engage in this discussion with him.
Yes, it is easy to say you are a Christian on the internet, or a Catholic, or a Muslim or just about anything else. But the loyalty you show, the depth of the moral values system that you reflect and how precious it is to you; those say something that cant be faked.
What you are missing is that when people complain about lack of charity they aren’t necessarily upset with your view on the topic. It’s also about how you say your view and how you treat people who disagree with you. You can be saying all the right things and still lack charity.

Jessica gave two specifric examples for why she felt their was a lack of charity. In neither of those posts was an argument (or even a statement) made about the posters view of what’s happened. She gave examples where she felt a poster was treated uncharitably.

Responding to someones statement they are leaving the thread because they are sick of the topic (a very valid reason to do so) with “Your concession is accepted” as though simply been willing to carry on the conversation for longer means you won… that’s not Christian behaviour. It’s childish behaviour. I don’t know any mature person who responds in that way. As is your comment that you must be speaking the TRUTH because she bowed out. Again because lasting the longest means you are right.

Admittedly she did expand upon that, but again her problem wasn’t with peoples views. It was with the fact that people refused to have a genuine discussion about it and some used ad hoc attacks or slurs to avoid doing so. Others simply kept posting the same information which had already been showin in this thread to be wrong.

I’m sick to death of people on this board claiming that they’re hated for their views. I call bull on that. You can disagree with transgenderism, gay marriage, everything the left does all you like. Some will hate you for it, but most won’t. So long as you do it with charity and without attacking those who disagree with you. (plural you).
Now we are the dregs?
Way to go ‘CatholicSheila’ to demonstrate the love of Christ for your fellow brothers and sisters of the faith. I feel so edified.
Perhaps it wasn’t charitable of me to say that. No issue with what I said, but that wasn’t the best wording. I was more concerned with addressing Jessica Cunara than with the fact that you also would read it. I apologise.

I do believe that you are wrong person for her to focus on. Regardless of whether or not you are right, even regardless of whether or not you behave in a Christian manner. If you are harming her faith, she should put you on ignore or learn to gloss over your posts. You aren’t worth it. None of us are.

I’m sure you would claim that she shouldn’t do so, because it would do her good to read what you consider “truth”. I follow church teaching - the only reason I converted to the faith was because I believe the Church has the authority to teaching. Yet I have to gloss over your posts because I do find how you express yourself very difficult. In the past, it has been a danger to my faith as it caused me to focus on what I saw as unchristian behaviour of others rather than focusing on my walk with God. Which is never a good thing. If I didn’t focus on others who I find more edifying (some of whom agree with you but express themselves differently, some who don’t agree with you) then it would be a danger to my faith.

And whilst you won’t like it, you aren’t worth that.

Except I uphold all the dogmas and doctrines of the Church. I don’t want a social club. If that’s what I was looking for there are plenty of places outside the Church I can go.

Perhaps you shouldn’t assume that just because someone has an issue with your behaviour (not beliefs) that they don’t hold to church teaching?

Can you accept though that it might not be the views that are causing the problem but the way those views are expressed?

It is possible to be right and still be uncharitable.

For an example, my family is very loud and very blunt. Some people struggle greatly with this, especially when we are together and they come from a quieter family. I have learnt that when someone takes issue with what I say that I need to consider whether it is what I said that was the problem, or how I said it. Most of the time, people struggle with the latter and to be effective I need to change my behaviour. This has been especially true when we’ve had SIL’s come into the family - at least until they get used to us.

Show me the specific statement I made that castigated ‘CatholicSheila’, or apologize.
I accede that that my rhetorical flourishes crossed a line and I am sorry for my hyperbolic accusation that you castigated her.
I am sick to death of being accused of being unloving when my agope for people is the ONLY reason I bother to even discuss this ugly topic.
I don’t think you mean to be unloving, only that you do not mention love in what you write.

If we wish to save souls we must show that we love them instead of merely claiming that we do.

I never said you weren’t Christians. I said that you are not the only people in this thread claiming to be Christians and that there are others who behave very differently.
You said I was being unchristian. In your long response I still don’t know why you say I am unchristian.
You believe you are worth someone losing their faith over? That’s very arrogant.
Where did I say I was? Why do you have to continue erecting straw man arguments to shoot down?
What you are missing is that when people complain about lack of charity they aren’t necessarily upset with your view on the topic. It’s also about how you say your view and how you treat people who disagree with you. ***You can be saying all the right things ***and still lack charity.

I didn’t say that.

When people refer to me as dregs and repeat several times that I am ‘not worth’ X, fill in the blank, yeah, I tend to take it personally. Crazy me, I know.
Perhaps it wasn’t charitable of me to say that. No issue with what I said, but that wasn’t the best wording. I was more concerned with addressing Jessica Cunara than with the fact that you also would read it. I apologise.
Why bother with avoiding giving me offense, of course. I am not a gay, homeless drug addict or some other helpless case that you can speak for, no, I can speak for myself and so I do.

There seems to be a pattern among lefties and others like yourself, where you make a calm and apparently rational argument and set of statement, then after those who disagree with you respond in kind but using statistics and logic in place of your appeals to emotionalism and sentimentality, you respond with name calling, hysterical accusations and astonishing hyperbole.
I do believe that you are wrong person for her to focus on. Regardless of whether or not you are right, even regardless of whether or not you behave in a Christian manner. If you are harming her faith, she should put you on ignore or learn to gloss over your posts. You aren’t worth it. None of us are.
Yeah, I get that you think I am not worth much apparently. Not my feelings, or my opinions and certainly not my right to be treated with the same dignity that you feel I must have for you and yours.
I’m sure you would claim that she shouldn’t do so, because*** it would do her good to read what you consider “truth”. ***I follow church teaching - the only reason I converted to the faith was because I believe the Church has the authority to teaching. Wow, that again. 🤷

I don’t think you mean to be unloving, only that you do not mention love in what you write.

In that one post I mention love for Christians and the love of Christ twice.

Do you understand that words actually do have MEANING to them?

Perhaps you shouldn’t assume that just because someone has an issue with your behaviour (not beliefs) that they don’t hold to church teaching?
How on Earth do you know a blooming thing about my BEHAVIOR? You don’t know me, where I live, what I do, how much charity I donate or tips I give out to people I don’t need to, or anything about me at all.

All you know is that I have the unmitigated gall to disagree with you.

Well, sorry, but I think you are causing great harm to people struggling with their sexuality and you do this based on half-baked pop-psychology and this generic nonsense that to hurt some ones feelings is somehow a great sin. IT is not. Sometimes hearing the Truth hurts. As long as it is stated with all due respect that is all the speaker is obliged to do.

I am more concerned about those who can change their behavior and will than those who can change their behavior and wont but use what anyone might say as the excuse for not doing what they should do.

You said I was being unchristian. In your long response I still don’t know why you say I am unchristian.
Did you read it? Given how you’ve replied, I can’t tell.
Where did I say I was? Why do you have to continue erecting straw man arguments to shoot down?
forums.catholic-questions.org/showpost.php?p=12424327&postcount=67
Then that is in how you read it and not in what I say.
Of course, when someone says you did something wrong it is always their fault. How convenient for you.
I didn’t say that.
I didn’t actually say you did say that. I said it was an example of what Jessica was complaining about. Which is very different to saying RGCheek said X. You said the second comment.

Feel free to address my comments now that we’ve dealt with that.
When people refer to me as dregs and repeat several times that I am ‘not worth’ X, fill in the blank, yeah, I tend to take it personally. Crazy me, I know.
If you take it personally that I don’t think you are worth someone losing their faith over, then you do indeed think you are worth someone losing their faith over.

I have never met a Christian that would disagree with my statement.
Why bother with avoiding giving me offense, of course. I am not a gay, homeless drug addict or some other helpless case that you can speak for, no, I can speak for myself and so I do.
Strawman. I never commented on whether you give offense to homosexuals, to drug addicts, or any other helpless case. I said you give offense to your fellow posters.
There seems to be a pattern among lefties and others like yourself, where you make a calm and apparently rational argument and set of statement, then after those who disagree with you respond in kind but using statistics and logic in place of your appeals to emotionalism and sentimentality, you respond with name calling, hysterical accusations and astonishing hyperbole
.

Except that I haven’t actually commented on the topic of the thread yet. I replied to Jessica and you got all upset and defensive. I can’t simply be replying because you managed to out argue me.

And rational argument? Please show me where you put up a rational argument, much less one using statistics and logic in this thread.
Yeah, I get that you think I am not worth much apparently. Not my feelings, or my opinions and certainly not my right to be treated with the same dignity that you feel I must have for you and yours.
I guess I didn’t need to give you the link above. You keep saying you are worth someone losing their faith over.
Yes, my statements make Baby Jesus cry.
I guess you also assume that just because you don’t mean to damage someones faith, you automatically can not damage someones faith.

You are either very naive, or a troll.
How on Earth do you know a blooming thing about my BEHAVIOR? You don’t know me, where I live, what I do, how much charity I donate or tips I give out to people I don’t need to, or anything about me at all.

All you know is that I have the unmitigated gall to disagree with you.
I’m quite capable of reading and hence, capable of seeing your behaviour on this board. Which is all I commented on.

No where did I claim to be all seeing and to know everything about you. An example of someone saying X and you extending it to read X Y and Z. Which btw is uncharitable and lack of charity is unchristian. You did want an example, right?

And you claim I’m attacking you.
Well, sorry, but I think you are causing great harm to people struggling with their sexuality and you do this based on half-baked pop-psychology and this generic nonsense that to hurt some ones feelings is somehow a great sin. And here you are assuming that I disagree again.

Please show where I have disagreed with church teaching on either sexuality or transgenderism (which, FYI are two completely different topics). You have no basis for claiming that I am spreading half baked pop psychology on this issue. If you can’t show where I have done so, then apologise for your accusations against me.
