Why Fordham? It’s a Jesuit University and I’m not sure they have a large Mormon student body.

Maybe you meant Bringham Young?

I actually don’t care if my kids grow up in a society that looks like the one I did. That’s immaterial to me. I hope they are safe and happy and I don’t think this is based on any arbitrary and subjective definition of American “culture”.

I don’t even know what “American Culture”, is. Does it means. Is is parades and hot dogs?

The words of Jesus ware clear- welcome the stranger.
While culture does evolve, it is something that is developed over a long period and is passed down to the next generation. The good parts need active cultivation, and the bad parts need weeding.

Your flippant approach is what leads to entropy, or system failure.

My grandparents all grew up and lived in Italy in small agricultural towns.

My kids don’t live similarly to them. The most important part passed down to them is our Catholic faith.

Well really my comment is chiding more than anything as there is no such thing as “White”. anyway- except as that subjective assessment that the object is not a person of color.

Me too. My kids are young still, but remaining practicing Catholic is important, and I pray they stay close to the faith.

’Awww. . . poor Black people’, ‘Awww. . . poor Mexicans‘, or ‘Awww. . . poor Jews…’ would be considered wrong.

If there aren’t identifiable White people how is it these same people can be identified when we need to accuse people of systematic hate and racism? How can Whites be racist against Blacks if White isn’t even a thing?

You mean if a person thinks that black people are inferior to white people, but never says it and never does anything overt they are not a racist?
Well, perhaps I was misled by the Jesuit who told me that, but I doubt it.

Visceral reactions are just visceral reactions, and people can’t help those, by and large. If we were to define “racism” by discriminatory perceptions, there might be a handful of saints on the earth who are not “racists” by that yardstick, but not many.

Trump’s message could not be clearer: Why are we taking in immigrants from places primarily populated by black and brown people when we should be taking in more white immigrants?
Not his message, of course, but what some want to turn it into.

Well, I don’t think that Donald Trump has had an introspective thought in his life.

When he speaks, and he speaks a lot, his biases just come spilling out. His biases against women, people of color, really anyone who isn’t Donald Trump.

So, I would propose that you can certainly be racist without realizing it. Or caring.

But focusing on the specific words Trump used missed the broader – and much more important – point here. Trump’s message could not be clearer: Why are we taking in immigrants from places primarily populated by black and brown people when we should be taking in more white immigrants?
That’s just your projection.

I read it as “why aren’t we selecting immigrants based on the needed skills they can contribute” My interpretation fits with prior references that we should be more like Canada and Australia. Are you also claiming their systems are racist?

No, if that is his message he could be clearer by actually saying words such as we don’t want Black people. Why would you think ****hole only refers to places where dark skinned people live? If those are the only ****holes then that isn’t Trumps fault. And if so we shouldn’t admit people simply because ****holes happen to only be where dark skinned people live.

Personally I’ve seen plenty of places White people live that are ****holes. I’d not associate ****holes with dark skinned people. If others do maybe the problem lies with them.

Here is my problem: Many people who come from countries that can be described as holes, contain people who bring excellent skills to the table. Why should we prevent people from coming here based on the economic status of the country of origin?

You are ignoring the context, as is the media.

This whole incident stems from the Dems trying to earmark a large number of visas expressly for people from Haiti and El Salvador, if I recall.

In that context Trump was pushing back on having lower standards for people from these countries than people from other countries could not compete for (countries like Norway).

In the context of what the Dems requested, pushback seems reasonable.

Actually, I am not against pushback. But Donald demeaned a huge swath of the world with his comments. His comments at the least showed his extreme ignorance. He rightly deserved to be criticized for those comments.

I think the media intentionally ignored the context, so they could push the more sensational angle. A more balanced coverage of the meeting would be far less offensive internationally. Obviously Trump could have spoken better to make the point that is in line with what he proposed earlier for reform.

None of his proposed reforms would disqualify highly capable people from Haiti getting visas.

Haitians come on boats or rafts they craft together. People from Central America walk across the border. Neither means of immigration are testing for the best and brightest.

How is it ignorant to call Haiti a ****hole? It would be ignorant to say it isn’t.

It is ignorant to use the country of origin as a reason to exclude people from the US. I know some very fine Americans who came from countries that can best be described as holes. Why should we have made them stay where they were?
