I heard a Trump supporter tonight say the party establishment is just using Cruz as a pawn to stop Trump and would not nominate Cruz. He said instead they would nominate Rubio, Ryan or Romney.
Well, the GOP most certainly would prefer someone else to Cruz, but they may not have the guts to pull off that trick, so they might go for Kasich, which is the only reason Kasich is still in the race. Cruz has been working prodigiously behind the scene to secure delegates for the second ballot, and trump is gearing up for that as well. So we shall see who indeed has the skills for deal making, if trump doesn’t make it first try.

I can’t believe that Cruz hasn’t made sure that this won’t happen.

Honestly, here’s how I see it.

Trump will enter with 1100 delegates. They all won’t be loyal, but let’s say 600 are. They won’t abandon Trump.

Cruz will enter with 700 delegates. In all likelihood, they will be highly loyal and some of Trump’s current delegates may shift to him. I’d say that 700 or so will stick with him.

There are 2472 delegates. That means that no one else will be able to get enough delegates to win the nomination. The only possibility of stopping Trump is to get 400 of the 1100 free agents to go with Cruz.

That’s the cruz game for now. Trump is working to win it on first ballot. Kasich, well, can he sneak up from behind and steal everything? You just never know.

I really don’t see how Kasich will get enough support, even if he has 200 delegates of his own.

It’ll be Trump on the first ballot or Cruz on the 23rd.

Did you really mean 23rd? That’s funny!

Rince Priebus has said multiple times the nominee will be one of the three running. If Kasich has no chance, why even include him? Why not encourage him to get out so people get their one-on-one fight?

I think Rince like having Kasich to keep Cruz honest. And they all hate Cruz. Don’t forget that.

I can see that. Right now, I’d bet on Ryan, but a lot can change.

Because Republican establishment hates Cruz with a passion . I suspect Kasich is hanging in there because there have been closed room discussions about how to eliminate both Trump and Cruz .

The Republican establishment wants to use Cruz to keep Trump from getting enough votes to win the nomination out right . But they don’t want Cruz to be the nominee -he is a means to an end and that end is to get the only remaining establishment backed candidate nominated-Kasich

Hard to see how they would get this done.

I’m one of the few (apparently) who actually thinks Kasich would be a good president. But even if he gets an engineered nomination, it’s tough to see him winning because so many disgruntled Repus wouldn’t vote.

I think Cruz would have a tougher time beating Clinton than most seem to think. Where’s the appeal to all but the “Constitution-is-all-I-think-about” crowd?

Trump, of course, has his own problems, which he won’t be able to fix unless he broadens his appeal a lot.

But I guess we’ll see.

I’m thinking that whoever the candidate out of the 3 remaining will have some republicans being disgruntled. I agree Kasich would be a good president.

In other news I participated in a poll yesterday in my state. Not sure if the results are available.

I expect Cruz’ delegates to be loyal and enough of Trump’s delegates to be loyal that I can’t see enough free agent delegates to put Kasich over the top.

I agree with you! Cruz’s delegates and Trump’s are loyal; they won’t vote for Kasich. I see them going to Paul Ryan or even Romney before Kasich. Polls may show Kasich could beat Clinton, but in actuality, I don’t think he could. Most of the US had never heard of him before the primaries.

Says a lot about the electorate.

Well, considering there are 50 states I don’t see much reason that the average American would know who the governor of Ohio is – except for particular circumstances like him/her running for president.
