It would have cost Trump nothing to tell Mattis a week in advance, “Hey, I’m going to announce a reversal of Obama’s transgender policy. It’s not public yet, but start doing any planning you need to do on the nuts and bolts.” Again, leave aside whether you think that transgender people should be in the US military. (For the record, I’m inclined to say no.) But any halfway competent manager would communicate it to their subordinate, not just blast it out over Twitter along with the latest sick burn of the NY Times.

I doubt any of us knows with whom he discussed the transgender matter in advance.

As to whether Trump is a “halfway competent manager”, I think his history shows that he is, and more.

It does not seem to me the bigwigs of the Boy Scouts needed to apologize for Trump. Are these young men so sensitive and sheltered that they’re not to be exposed to American politics?

And actually, Trump didn’t talk about things he was “trying to do” to women. The big nothing tape was him joking about the nature of groupies. Vulgar language, to be sure, but likely the truth. I have heard female doctors and attorneys say a lot worse and with a lot less justification or humor.

It’s pervasive in this society, and anybody who claims it isn’t, is either sheltered beyond belief or improvising.

Sheltered? Is it too much to just do an event straight and talk to the Scouts about the Scouts like every other President has managed to do since 1937?

Mr. Trump’s remarks read as if he came to the Jamboree with a perfectly acceptable speech that he decided to dress up with some ill-advised “winging it.” He needs to stop doing that, particularly in front of a audience made up primarily of minors who do not vote.

Gen. Kelly has let Mr. Scaramucci go. A nice decisive move away from chaos. Perhaps Mr. Trump will stop doing things that his base would need to call him to account for. That would be a good solution to the lack of direction and instances of poor decision-making that have held the President and his agenda back so far.

Well, I guess if we had the unexpurgated texts of all the presidential addresses to the Boy Scouts since 1937, we might conclude that. Otherwise, we have no basis for saying it.

If you mean the statements he made in an unsolicited phone call to a reporter he did not ask to speak to off the record, it would be hard to report on the Scaramucci “interview” in a way that did not at least hint at extremely vulgar language. I understand that he was new to the job and under a lot of stress, but his rant was enough to embarrass a dog.

Well, I’m just going off of media (I know, the dreaded media) reports that Mattis had literally a day’s notice, and was shocked that he was expected to undo months worth of work based with one day’s head start over Twitter.

You and I are watching very different movies. I see no evidence that Trump is a competent manager or businessman. He essentially went bust and then reinvented himself as a reality TV/tabloid personality. So, I guess a competent self promoter, anyway.

I would say it was more a matter of poor decision-making on Mr. Scarramucci’s part. Remarkable, though, considering the accomplishments that man has had in his life. I doubt any of us here has a rational basis for saying either of those accomplished men have poor decision-making capabilities.

It’s illuminating when you write this stuff, even when done so obliquely.

The interesting question, presuming that this is not a deliberate FAKE post, is this: how do people get their heads so filled with things so misaligned with reality? Utterly fascinating.

If you look online, there are actually a lot of texts available.

If you mean to imply that one of the past Presidents might have gone to a Jamboree and gone on a tear like Mr. Trump did and that both the press and the Boy Scouts used to cover up for it, you’d have to find a Scout to attest to it. So far, however, not a single one has done so.

If the Scouts say that they’ve never been subjected to anything like this, I’d tend to believe the Scouts. They are honest, and not a “fake news” source.

It is sad that Trump supporters have the low expectation of mere not-Obama. It is sad that they don’t demand more even at the most minimal level of executive decorum and competence.

There are habits that lead to success in some fields or do not prevent success in some fields that lead to ruin in others.

I fear that Mr. Scaramucci had the impression that he could get away with excesses in how “direct” his wording was because the President so often can. I do not remember a single time Mr. Trump, even at his most outrageous, has gone as low as Scaramucci did on that leak-seeking rant. He really needed to get fired for that.

Who truly takes the time to look online at texts of speeches by Presidents given to the Boy Scouts just to back up some obvious thought they don’t like Trump’s speech.

Good grief; who has time for this and who cares enough to do so? Worse things have happened for goodness sake.

Well, I went bust twice in my life and haven’t done too badly since. If a man takes no chances in life, he’s not likely to accomplish much. And Trump himself didn’t actually go “bust” even once. If I’m not terribly mistaken a couple of his companies (of which he has a number) took Chapter 11. Chapter 11 is not “going bust”. Wouldn’t hurt to read up on that.
